<----straight guy and feline lover here. Not really a "dog person" in fact. I don't hate dogs of course , some of the smaller ones are cute, although I don't truly like big dogs. I don't trust them or like them jumping up at me, etc etc. I wasn't raised around any and therefore am not truly comfortable with them for the most part. Just not my thing.

Felines are a much more regal and "classy" animal anyway, and in fact one thing I admire about them is their (generally) more independent natures and even their slight air of haughtiness. Cats and dogs, to me, are like a....... Parisian intellectual or artist, as opposed to , say, some Bible belt American NASCAR fan.... j/k.... well, mostly kidding....

I'm proud to say I have a cat...I love my baby.

He has such a cute little personality...and he makes me smile whenever he speaks to me...so why wouldn't I like cats?

They are slightly less work than dogs.

Men always talk about how they don't like women who own too many cats or who talk about their cats all the time.

"too many" being the key...
We always had dogs and cats around when I was growing up. We lived a few miles outside of town on 20someting acres and needed cats to keep the rats in check and dogs to ward off the stray hitchhikers/hobos. So I get along good with either species.
However... My 2nd wife loves cats, needs cats, has to have cats. She also cared for 3 colonies of feral cats downtown. She named all the cats (200 or so) and caught the females and injured cats and had them treated/spayed/neutered. Then she would return most of them. Some she kept because they didn't didn't get along with the rest of the colony for some reason or another, or... just because.
And of course I was recruited to help catch the ferals, build holding pens, clean 6 litter boxes twice a day, give rabies shots, and flea/tick meds, cleaning ear mites out of thier furry little heads, bottle feeding abandoned litters, transporting them to and from the vet's office...
I went through more leather gloves catching injured cats than I did welding, and I did a LOT of welding back then.
One or two cats I can handle and possibly enjoy, but when we split up she had 17 cats.
For a while after that I despised cats... but now that my house has been cat free for 7 years I'm over that.
Don't want any but don't hate them.

The nice thing about a cat, is when you leave for work there's a good chance he'll be in the exact same spot when you get home.

You can leave for a weekend, leave some food and water out, and he'll still be alive when you get back.

They aren't overly needy.

They like to chill.

I have a cat, but he lives at my parents in retirement. He's 17 and is just taking it easy down at their place. He's such an outdoor cat that if I had him at my place, he would either go crazy from being inside all the time, or if I let him out he would probably appear at their place in a week or so anyway. So he's happy there. My mom has a cat and they get along with each other.

I'm fine with cats, as long as they're inside/outside cats. In other words, they go outside and don't live in the house 24/7.

Because honestly, even though I KNOW someone or several someones are going to chime in and say otherwise, I have never been in a house where the cats lived inside 24/7 where I didn't smell cat piss. Never. Not once. Almost none of the owners could smell it (I guess because they're around it all the time), but I always could. And cat piss is probably one of the worst smells in the world and it's nearly impossible to get out.

And at best, with an inside cat, you've got an animal that shits in a box in your house. If they can't use the toilet, I'd rather my animal (dog OR cat) go outside and be somewhat civilized about the whole thing. I really don't need a box of sandy turds anywhere in my house just to have a pet.

And for the record, I've had both inside cats and inside/outside cats throughout my life. I've never had an inside/outside cat that gave me any problems. Conversely, I've never had an inside cat that DIDN'T give me problems.

My opinion of straight men with cats is they probably like women for real. Men who are phobic with cats usually have mucho female/sexuality issues, same as men with excessively neatly trimmed beards. Hey, just my intuitive opinion.

Well you know the economy is going in the dumper and some guys just don't have hedge funds to pay the grocer. Or maybe they just don't like having to walk the dog in more ways than one.

I'm shocked to see how many men have cats. I thought that straight guys weren't very fond of cats.

Why would you think something like that? It certainly isn't true.

Men always talk about how they don't like women who own too many cats

Oh, yeah, all men are talking about that all the time.

So why do so many men have them?

Probably because they actually like cats.

Maybe because my ex abandoned her as a kitten, (when she split) and I nurtured this poor kitten back to health. She is my buddy, unconditionally. Her name is Charlotte , and I am definitely a straight guy. So whats up with the stereotyping?

I actually think guys are more like cats than dogs. We do just fine if left alone, couldn't care less if you're around, spend most of our time amusing ourselves, and pretty much only need you to satisfy our physical needs (in the case of the cat, food). Is that the kind of response you were looking for??

I love cats. They're a lot like women in some ways. If you can understand them, you have a much better chance of understanding women.

The reason guys say they don't like women with too many cats is because women with too many of any pet usually have as many pets because they are lonely and need something to be affectionate with. And if they have such a hard time finding a mate that they have to collect animals to get their affection needs met, there is probably a reason why they're single.

I've never seen an emotionally healthy/stable woman with 6 or 8 cats. It's only the ones that are lonely and unhappy. They collect animals and treat them like their children.

They are the female equivalent of the male Star Trek geek. Why do women not enjoy hearing about Dungeons and Dragons and World of Warcraft? Okay, you understand my point now.

On the upside to this, the animals have THE BEST life they could possibly have. They're pampered and catered to beyond belief.

On the downside, these women generally remain alone for most of their lives. The more time and effort they put into their pet collection, the less likely they are to find a man.

They're low-maintenance and cute. What more could you want?
Sounds like what most guys (I know) want in a female. Cute and low maintenance

hate to say it, OP, but it's noticable to you because there is a myth/stereotype/moree etc etc (not sure what word to use) that Men love/are Dogs, and Women love/are Cats. I do believe there are cat-people and dog-people, and it doesn't matter what sex you are. But, in the city cats are easier. I'd have both- if I had my own yard I would get a dog first thing.

A particularly long winter in Burlington, Vermont, in an apartment on the side of a hill taught me the advantages of a cat. My dog took forever to sniff out a poop-worthy patch whilst I shivered my ass off in sub-zero weather. The litter thing gets old, but if you train your cat to poop only every week or so...fits right into my laid-back type-B lifestyle.

I think it's a basic fear of catmittment.

He-Man had a cat. A battle cat.
What is wrong with a guy having a cat.
I don't have a cat, but if I had to choose a pet it would be a cat or very lazy dog.

I've already said my piece in here but there is one thing I forgot to ask : since when was it considered a sign of homosexuality for a man to have a cat ? I've never heard this and I can't imagine where something so silly would originate. I've got two cats I rescued from the Humane Society. I live in an apartment. Once these two are passed on I may or may not get another two but in the meantime, why would my fondness for animals equate to my being effeminate ? I've honestly never heard of this stereotype until this thread mentioned it and I can think of some pretty manly men who have cats as opposed to dogs. Hell, I've got male friends who have birds and fish. Is there a stereotype for those animals and how they relate to people too ?
