| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 8:14:47 AM | | I like the idea of trying Dylan O'Conner's on Portage. Even though I live in North Kildonan, there hasn't been any get together in that area of the city so why not give it a try. Price is definitely better at Dylan's than D-Jays. | |

| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 8:32:56 AM | | D'Jays has been arranged for this week and they are expecting us - so its only right we go there. We can do Dylan O'Conners the following Thursday. I think we need to be fair about things - I asked, D'Jays are being accomodating - people have signed up allready for D Jay's so we should carry through on this one. | |

| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 8:46:58 AM | | this is interesting u think businesses would be happy theres morecustomers but its the opposite its this its like nobody wants more work and if they get more duties they ditch us money makers lol man maybe we have to find a place with good wings and is so slow in customer wise they need the business then maybe we might have a regular wing place. | |

| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 10:24:38 AM | Sue;
Thanks for all of you're hard work & effort in making these Wing Nights happen. I, for one, am greatly appreciative of you're arrangements & getting these Wing Nights organized.
Such is the Business of doing Business; Profits, Costs and ensuring that Customer Service is attained at all times. Balancing everything can be challenging. And it's certainly true what they say (especially in Business!): "You can't please everyone".
I'm willing to give D-Jay's a chance. See you (and everyone else!) on Thursday!

| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 11:20:35 AM | There sure seems to be some disention on this one. It seems most of it has to do with the price.
So kudos to Sue for the effort she went to for this one.
however i have a few thoughts.
Perhaps those who dont like this venue can plan the next wing night, choosing something more in line with their thinking
Perhaps a new thread can be started, sending everyone to the winnipegwings.com site and then suggestions/voting can be done on a location ( yes i realize that this could get cumbersome)
As an alternative, since we have a large group that usually attends these events, perhaps if there are two or three spots that most agree have really good wings ( based on quality, flavor options, size) we could approach those places about coming on a non wing night, but they give us a wing night deal for our group, and then we give that place regular business on that night. Maybe there is a night that is more dead for them that they might be willing to give us a deal if we are a large group. Ideally for something like this it should be more central if it will be a regular location.
just my thoughts | |

| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 1:31:53 PM | Actually, I would bet that Tony Romas would have been fine with us going there on a night other than Thursday. I have been there on Sunday and Monday when the wings are cheap and the place is empty.
I would agree with JDGuy though, that if we find a place that lots of people like, I'm sure we could swing a deal on a night that is normally quiet for that establishment.

| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 2:00:32 PM | Well, I would start a new thread for wing nite, but I can't promise I will make it out, so I won't. I will say however, that central seems the most logical place to have these events. Also, calling around, if you want, to see where wings are the cheapest, we are on POF after all, lots of single parents on here or people going through an expensive divorce or whatever...cheap works best for me!
Cudos to everyone that has started these get togethers, just have tough skin, cause you ain't going to please everyone, but do keep in mind the stuff I mentioned above and maybe don't plan anything with a restaurant until you are sure the masses are in agreement...just saying is all...man I miss Justa.

| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 2:57:34 PM | I may have a solution for all of us on the wing night, discounted wings, closed restaurant for private party,(seating up to 41 legal, lol) will do specail order wings. $4.99 or less and they are way bigger than TR's. This is a nice well run place, but it's in the south again, sorry guys, but it may be worth the trip. Haywire, you have to check this place out
E-mail sent to Haywire | |

| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 3:14:41 PM | Hello everyone I have some bad news, Dylan O'Conners has wing nights on Tuesdays nights for $.25 per wing. otherwise it is reg price at $8.99 per 10.
I also went to the Charelswood hotel, they have wings nights on Mon,Wed and Fri in the Bar for $.35 per wing.
So far D'Jays sounds like the best deal so im all for giving it a try an seeing what their wings are like.
cheers and hope to see you all there

| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 3:32:31 PM | If they ever turn event organization into an Olympic event, I hope Haywire Sue is Canada's representative because I think she will bring home a gold medal.
Given the information about why Tony Roma's wasn't happy with the group, I think we are going to run into this same problem time and again. When a restaurant first hears about a large group booking they are excited, however that will wear off when they realize how long the group intends to stay. Restaurants need turnover of business to succeed. I am sure there are marketing types amongst us who could quote the exact target figure (2 1/2 times per night or whatever). In short, they don't want your $25 when it is spread out over several hours...they want your $25 and then the $25 from the person after you and the person after that. Given what Sue reported, it sounds like some people were light on ordering as well as tipping (in the eyes of Tony Roma's).
A place that has no business that doesn't care how long a group stays is probably not a place with great quality....or maybe it is some place new.
I think the solution is this. Pick several places and don't establish a regular spot. We could even still go to TR's on occasion if we take the banquet room. This way we can achieve our goal of socializing without wearing out our welcome at any particular restaurant.

| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 3:50:05 PM | Be very careful what you say about the unkown, and a say a new place or a place with not great quality!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I trained this owner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The first 20 pounds are me that night!!!!!!!!!! | |

| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 5:19:06 PM | As much as I liked Tony Rs, I never got the impression that the staff resented us. I know I always tipped, as I was getting good service. I honestly can't believe they were losing that kind of money on us. Look forward to seeing you all Thursday at D Jays. | |

| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 5:41:00 PM | Hmmmm.. my first thought is for Haywire Sue (you rock!!). You made the calls, etc.. Remember, people, someone made it happen. I'll try to be there on Thursday, mabie we (as a group) can discuss where we will meet next week. Either way, thanks are in order to Haywire, for her time and efforts.......as for TR's, I always tip generously, I still have trouble with their whole attitude... i.e. we don't spend enough.....not good service to our group. Word of mouth is very strong in the food and beverage industry....we'll find a place that wants our regular business. | |

| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 5:56:23 PM | D Jays, Oh sure everyone, right down the street from me and I have to work. Been going there for years the food has always been great and the service excellent.
D Jays has been a staple in Westwood for 25yrs, and the whole time in the same family. I will try and make it after I am done if not.....enjoy!!!

| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 7:23:35 PM | Thanks everyone, the comments are humbling. I just wanted to keep everyone informed as this is everyone's event. I'm just the table snatcher, make a arrangement if necessary and post the thread. It certainly wouldnt happen or be a success, if everyone didnt participate. Thanks to everyone - its a joint effort. Big Hug to Everyone, Sue | |

| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 7:30:26 PM | One of the keys to remind everyone...here is that...Wing night should rotate around the city...so everyone can get a fair opportunity to attend and in fact if need be the two areas might be a good idea.
Sometimes it's not that it is to far persay...it is to far to be from home if there is a problem with someone's kid or a sitter.
You need to remember...you are in a public place!! and that these servers often survive on the tips they make. Patience is a big thing as well. If the place is busy...be patient..if they are not busy!! Well then you can say something....
I really don't understand why these places felt we were to much...the place could be mostly empty....and ....not that many people seem to come by looking for seats....
I think ..it is the lack of gratuity...being left...some might be trying to make up for it more than others and it is not enough....
Maybe a singles group really has a stigma!
Just my two cents... | |
|
| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 7:59:03 PM | I'll take your two cents and add mine! - Some people dont tip and they are only a small part of the problem here. I think now that Tony Rs just doesnt want us cuz we dont consume enough hooch. $5 for a basket of wings when, if you enter the restaurant and order ribs, you are dropping zillions of dollars. Well, maybe not, but its not cheap and we were seeing it as a reasonable price for food - which it is assuming we were also being pisstanks - which we were not.
Here's to D Jays and any other place desperate enough to want our business.
|
| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 8:14:20 PM | Thorndyke - I dont think that D Jays are depsarate (not saying you suggested that and I dont want to go to a place that is desperate - not a good sign) - I think they are smart business people - being local and not a chain - being in business for as long as I can remember - quickly responding to my questions - showing appreciation by Thanking me for letting them know we would be attending on Thursday - and realizing that there is money to be made off our group. This is how local business stays alive - customer service. I dont think we will have a problem there, but one never knows, right? I was told by the manager that their after work crowd is gone by 6 so they are ready for fresh faces.
Smartie - we were on Pembina Highway and have moved to Portage Avenue - so we are moving. If people choose to stay here as they did Tony Roma's then it will be the choice of the people who attend. If the food/location/service doesnt fit the bill then we will be moving on. Nothing stopping anyone else for doing a different wings nite at a different location in the city. If someone else wants to look after Thursday Wings - I would gladly turn it over. I took it on, because I was under the impression no one else wanted to do it.
Nothing personal against Thorndyke or Smartie by my comments - only my opinion.

| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 8:19:12 PM | Seeing as everyone else is throwing their two cents in...Here come mine :o)
I fully agree with the person who stated about some of the people on POF being not "well to do"...For me I am on disability which is a fixed income...I only have very few dollars to spend at the end of paying bills each month...I enjoyed the wing nite when it was close enough to somewhere that I could get to without having to travel far....From the osborne area with no traffic it is at least a 25 minute drive to the restaurant...So if you figure it all out thats an hour drive either way...Probably about $3 gas spent....So if you factor in $6.75 for wings, another 3 in gas pls another 3 for drinks you now have a total of $12.75...Add in 2-3 dollars for tips and its now cost $15...I could go to tonys for under 10 and have the travel time greatly lessened..Thus if one only had say 3 hours free in an evening they wouldnt have to spend 1/3 of the time travelling....True enough however some people may not feel comftorable going to their after what was said to have gone on with the manager of the place...However i feel strongly that a centralized location would better serve everyone...Meeting on common ground ya know...At least in the central area of the city (Which would boil down to locations like pembina, osborne village, downtown etc) no one would be able to complain that it is too far this way or too far that way...Just a thought not trying to step on anyones toes here that is not my intention....
In any case a few of us south enders will be getting together around our end of the city this thursday....Please feel free to message me if you would like to join we would love to have you!
To all of those going to D-Jays....Best of luck in the new location can't wait to hear how it went!!! Hope the wings are yummy
Take Care and Happy Fishing,

| Thursday Wings Nite - Jan 11/07 - New Location Posted: 1/9/2007 8:26:33 PM | | I have to say I for one welcome the location fully. It seems everything that's done for events or get togethers is on the opposite side of the city from me. For once I don't have to drive 20-30 minutes to get somewhere. It's an incredible pain to have to drive all over to try to go to things. I understand I'm in the minority at this end of town but it's sure nice to see something close to home for a change. | |
