This is not something that causes me undue distress, but I find that a lot of people get confused over the difference between Georgie and Geordie.

MSG 29 "I won't even post to this forum now; there's too much say about grammar and previous posts! My head is spinning and the majority has weighed in! I presume you all feel the same sentiments."

I can't believe you made the effort to come on the UK forums to say that you had no intention of posting on it.

No-one asked you to come, and no-one made you.

You are, of course, free to come and post your thoughts.

I didnt realise what you meant until i re read the post you were talking about, read it in a bristol accent and then it made perfect sense

I think people who are office workers, like myself, are the worst when it comes to spelling because we get lazy.... we have spell check... would you have a dog and bark yourself??

Did I miss someone pointing out it's grammar not grammer?!

I used to have a job auditing scientific reports so any mistakes jump out and annoy me, I try to ignore them

But as I've started, frequent ones I see are:

1, their, there and they're
2, loose, lose
3, your and you're
4, wonder and wander!
5, common and come on, especially on forums
6, quiet and quite

MSG 31 "OMG, Vin! You totally missed the point! I used in that post many of the grammatical mechanics & words we had discussed in this thread. Wake up!!! Sheesh!"

So, you used a perfectly grammatically-accurate post just to make a point about......what?

I get confused in the speech quotations within speech quotations ...thing...

i.e. Fred said, "So, I was hearing this conversation and Liam said to Sally's pal, 'Don't look back in anger.' but she wasn't listening."

is that right? am I close?

and what about when people are thinking in a novel? can I use quotation marks then? (nope, so what do I use?) (brackets?)

Why don't my icons work? = P I had a whole parade of them.

I'd agree with those who have posted about the difference between 'affect' and 'effect' - I have never been able to figure out which one is appropriate and in what situation.

The other one I struggle with is 'stationary' or 'stationery'. I can never remember which is the spelling for an object at a standstill and which applies to writing equipment.

I know looking in a dictionary would bring me the answers, but hey, I thought it might be more interesting to pose the question here

And when you all get over your use of wrong words or pick on me for starting a sentence with the word 'And'; here is my version of lighting the blue touchpaper (touch-paper?LOL) and withdrawing to a safe distance:

Go on then you know you want to; What about the totally inaccurate use of the apostrophe by everybody nowadays (No it isn't day's!)? let the fun begin.................... (Extra full stops added to infer a continuation).

Here's one I've noticed on these Forums lately.

If it's one MAN

and several MEN

why can't people work out that

it's one woMAN

and several woMEN?

I did try to change this in Msg 11, but everyone else seems to prefer the new spelling!

I LOVE this sh*t......
I teach ESL for a living, spikke de Inglis gut, speak Dutch and am quite adept at speaking German.
The grammar/spelling mistakes here drive me crazy but it is more about me than the people posting the messages. (I am not talking about typos).

Affect/Effect= Verb/Noun

A ; separates two independent clauses (complete sentences) related to the same idea.
Ex: I like coffee; I also like tea.
The teacher is *in*.

I try very hard to tolerate bad spelling, but bad wordcraft irritates me intensely.
I get worried by blank profiles because the way a person uses words says so much about them.

yep 'effect' and 'affect' i always have to double check 'your' and 'you're' and tomorrow is a word that drive me nuts.

i know a lot of people who itch their scratch which makes me crazy.

on a mean note i am irked also by people who say pacifically not specifically.

my grammer as you may have noticed is also non existent

oh theres one the hyphonate or not to hyponate i.e. re-read? re read? site specific or site-specific etc. oh yes and apostrophy s i'm hopless with.

Sometimes I get my beings/beens mixed up,but not my beans.

My,punctuation's,terrible.I just love putting in those little commas.Anywhere I think a brief pause of breath is needed,in one goes.My breathing must be more rapid than most.

Some (rare) days,my head seems to be filled with big words, that I did'nt even know that i knew.I blame falling asleep once, during newsnight.

if anyone knows 'sound' words, like tutting, sighing etc.would you message me them.thanx.

StationEry and StationAry

I was taught an easy way to remember the difference for those two.

E is for envelope and therefore StationEry
A is for Automobile and therefore "The car is stationAry!
