I'm gonna throw in my two cents here. I get social security disability benefits. Not because I'm disabled but because my anti-rejection meds are so freakin expensive it would take my entire income to pay for them. But I do own a car and I do have a job. I had been in the work force full time prior to 2004 when I had my liver transplant so I do feel entitled to some compensation from the government. I mean, I did pay all that money in over all those years, right?

There are all kinds of reasons people receive disability benefits. And there are a lot of people who probably lie and cheat to get them. I happen to not be one of those people.

^^I really think there are damn few fakers. It takes years usually to get benefits, and you can't work during that time. So, some people depend on the charity of family and friends, and some people become homeless during that time.
Who would do that if they didn't have to?? All for a SSD check that when it finally comes, you can barely live on??

And by the way, many disabilities prevent you from walking much, so those people need cars. So you people who think those on SSD shouldn't be able to afford cars are making asses of yourselves.

And for those of you who say, "well, if he can drive, he could be a taxi driver." Well, there is the good day/bad day phenomenon I mentioned earlier. And also, you are in a job market competing against healthy young immigrants who WANT those taxi driver jobs.
If you are the employer at a taxi company. who are you going to hire? Joe Brain Damage, or Apu the hardworking healthy young immigrant?

Here's my take...depends on each situation. If the person is legitamately disabled, but is doing the best they can within their abilities, I wouldnt fault them for that. Some things are beyond our control, and who are we to judge. Especially if it is what the OP is hinting at... a war injury... I think we should honor these people who sacrafice on our behalf.

However, be careful OP not to assume that some people arent dating you because of your situation. I see this a lot with single parents. "So and so wont date me because Im a single parent" which is true in some cases, but sometimes it has nothing to do with the kid... its just that two people arent compatible.

Yeah, that's a very good point. Sometimes, when we assume we are discriminated against, we have no motivation to look any further into what we might be doing wrong.

Hmmm... A most interesting question.

I receive what you call Social Security. Some 19 year old neanderthal troglodite ran over my Harley. The unfortuate thing about that, apart from the destruction of my Pride and Joy, was that I was sitting on it at the time. OUCH!
I am also a single parent, caring for my beautiful 13 year old Daughter, (Ok, I am Biased, but what Parent isn't).

I don't know what the situation is over there, but here in Aus I am paid by the Government to stay at home and care for my child, to the tune of $1600 a month. As a penioner, that's what they call us, I am entitled to many discounts including Rent, ($60 a week for a 4 bed house).
I am paying for my childs education, excursions and other needs, (She comes first). And the freezer and fridge is full to capacity.

Am I sponging off the taxpayer? Let's see now. In the 8 years before the accident I had paid a total of 1.2 Million in tax. I currently pay back around 16% of my income in hidden taxes, called GST, on everything I buy, including petrol. I own a car and I am looking at buying another Bike.
I should mention that I Volunteer as a teacher of IT to older people and Migrants, a Voluntary Therapist, Financial, Relationship and Substance Abuse Couseller. Giving back to the community my skills, in return for the community's support of me and my family.

What I am trying to say is that being a Welfare Recipent shouldn't really be a criteria as to whether a person is good or bad. It's more to do with what that person does with the money. And if all a person is looking for is an easy life and income? I would hardly use that as a sound basis for a successful relationship. I know, when the money ran out, so did she.

What if I met someone here who had gainful employment? They would never have to cook dinner, do the washing, ironing or cleaning, as well as having a well experience child minder.

I call that a positive. Wouldn't You?

The ignorance here is appalling...my Mom is on SS, and she can afford a car

I do agree with the things you say...but ask...
Is your Mom on SS (social security retirement) SSI disabilily (for those who've never worked)or SSD ( worked and became disabled) because they are all different things....and different amounts!!!

^^SSD...she does afford a car...but also lives in a tiny 3 room home, shops at thrift stores, and coupons...the car has 95,000 miles on it. She couldn't get around without it.

ah....I think the assumption by others was more that if one could drive ..that meant they Could ergo work (rediculous of course)

But I don't think anyone said those on SS "shouldn't have a car"

My sis is on SSD and what she gets is about $400 short of the average rent here ( NJ ) .
Mind you this does not even begin to address how she would pay for other things..like the luxuries (known as as food, electric and phone)..if she could find a place where she could match the rent.

It's such a pitiful amount of money it's a disgrace. They say you can judge a society by how they treat thier most vulnerable members..When my Mom passes my siblings and I will all contribute so that she has a place to live.

There's certianly enough money we all pay in taxes that people who are disabled should be given enough to live independently..Don't even let me get started on how this country spend it's money..( our money) on the wrong things

ThundrHead:

If I were ever planning to date again, then yes, I would. As someone who is also disabled, I would, however, want to know the nature of the disability. As some have stated here, there are far too many milking the system and stealing the benefits of others, particularly non-disabled and non-citizens.

The things that are naturally considered in choosing whether or not to choose to date someone still apply, ablebodied or not.

Lol, some of these comments in this thread crack me up. I think in general most women would be turned off by a guy in this kind of situation. Better to lie and when you get her attached enough, then maybe tell her.

That would depend on the reason for the SSI. I mean if he is on it because he has to be then ok. But if he is just doing it cause he can then no.

Try faking a SS disability claim sometime, LOL. It takes 3-5 years to get SS disability benefits, extensive medical records and SS medical exams are required. It is also next to impossible to get benefits without an attorney who will take 25% up to a certain amount of your back pay. You can be 100% disabled from a service connected military disability and still commonly be turned down my the SS for disability pay.

If he gets a disability check there is a very good chance he qualifies and needs it.

You people that say if he can drive he can work. Ok, SS takes money out of some guy's check all his life at a percentage of his pay. Insurance taken involuntarily from his pay. Say he made 100K a year, so you expect that fellow to deliver pizzas now, give me a break.

Let it happen to you sometime. Get real sick, I mean sick like not getting better, not able to ever do a profession you have trained for. And then lets see you tell SS you are too proud to collect disability insurance that you paid for all your working like. Grow up.

Use your brains before you post.

I wouldn't care how the guy gets his money (legally of course) as long as HE is okay with it, that's what matters.

not from this site. Women here are looking for husbands not dates...and unless they have NO income they're not likely to "settle" for someone who makes less than them.

I've come to accept it as human nature...just like I don't really want to marry a big girl...

If a man was on social security benefits then this would mean he is a senior, so no I would not date him. The thought of dating someone as old as my mother is slightly creepy. Now if you are talking about disability , well no I would have no problem with this. I don't know where some of the other posters are from, but getting disability here means you really need it. It is not easy to get and they make you jump through multiple hoops to get it. Sometimes people who really need it are tuned down and they have a very obvious disability.

As long as it's not a problem for him and he's happy and contented with his life, then it wouldn't be a problem for me.
