| The Big Chill Posted: 1/15/2007 11:26:06 AM | Wyspr, I disagree. Usually, the course sand is mixed with a chemical that works like salt but doesn't corrode the steel in the cars, roads, and bridges. The sand roughs up the ice and is usually swept up later to be reused in the next ice storm. In this part of the country, ice is really pretty common and people do about as well here as other places. What they do not have here are studded tires and chains that not only help those people get around but also break up the ice surface for others. The studs go on the tear up the pavement later. The sand actually does a reasonable job of roughing the surface but sand is useless on snow and sleet so it is not used up north. Salt is only marginally effective and then only for very thin ice and for a very short time before it washes away. Ice is still ice. When it is "black" ice, meaning so smooth and clear you can't see it, then it is a serious problem. An inadequate amount of salt will only make ice more slippery with a thin coat of water. In simple terms, the trick to driving on ice is to make as little change in momentum as possible. That means very slow turns, very gentle acceleration and very light braking. Don't try hills you can't coast up and don't go down hills that might require stopping. Its all simple physics and it applies anywhere. Don't tap anti-lock brakes. In icy conditions, don't set your parking brake. The water that accumulates in the brake cables will freeze them in place and one wheel might stay locked. | |

LOL, i didnt have antilock brakes on my old buick in michigan i guess, because i tapped ( tapped meaning to lightly apply preassure, release and repeat until you are going slow enough to make a safe stop for anyone wondering) the brakes starting about half a dang block from the stop sign on really bad days *grinz*
I will have to defer to your knowledge of what they put on the roads here, but it locks like rocks to me. Never used chains or studs where I grew up. We got a lot of snow, perhaps we didn't get as much ice?? I know what to do on black ice too... you simply hold on for the ride and pray!

| The Big Chill Posted: 1/15/2007 4:00:12 PM | Ya know, it is colder than a witches T1T in a brass bra!!!! I love the cold when I have a cuddle buddy, but right now, all I have is an electric blanket and a mean kitty cat. Plus the electricity is not very reliable around here. I can't even keep a fire going. But on the bright side, I am in a good mood. I still have my life..... Whatever This suck$!!! I just want to warm up!!!! Have a great day ya'll. Otherwise, I would just watch movies, and order a pizza and stay inside, but because gas is so high, then I have to pay my electric bill, and gas, to drive to Fort Worth every day for work (this is just an all around horrible situation for me)
Thanks for letting me vent. (I am in a good mood... really)

| The Big Chill Posted: 1/16/2007 3:07:44 PM | Taxasbaby,if you happen to see my big Buck ask him to hang around until I get there.
I wish I was living in the Hill Country enjoying the beauty of nature and hanging out among the wildlife.
Since I can only dream I'll sit here drinking my coffee and wait for another Deer season to come around.
It's cold here in the concrete city of Dallas. Got to get another cup of coffee.

| The Big Chill Posted: 1/16/2007 3:29:52 PM | | Just got bad during the night, boss called this morning said stay home. Agreeing with most everybody here, a pot of coffee, a blanket, a movie, stayed in jammies til 1 pm, not like I'm gonna have visitors...Certainly not going to be on the road with 30,000 Aggies back in town to start school. | |

| The Big Chill Posted: 1/16/2007 8:26:09 PM | TT's big buck must be bedded down in a stand of cedar cause nothing's moving around here,,, just too cold! Sleet/snow mixture fell on and off all day. Watched the kids trying to scrape up enough to make a decent snowball.... lol,, it was a sad sight! Poor Texas children,, just itching for a snowball fight... Maybe tomorrow though.... Now the coffee pot's full,,, again,,, and I'm going to go take a bubble bath!
Stay warm and safe ya'll, tb

| The Big Chill Posted: 1/17/2007 2:23:16 AM | | It's the 17th now still cold and icy. I WANT to work but can't 'cause the weather has kept my shed (shop) from being delivered. I am holed up in a tiny room bored out of my ever loving mind. I could definitely use a good cuddler. | |

| The Big Chill Posted: 1/17/2007 1:55:15 PM | This weather sucks!! It needs to be 70 degrees and stay that way for the rest of the year! I didn't know it was supposed to sleet last night so I ended up being late to work this morning. All the school's in the surrounding towns were closed and I still had to come to work! Sheet of ice on my car and all. Took what felt like forever just to scrape all the stupid ice off the windshield. Thank goodness for spray de-icer. | |

| The Big Chill Posted: 1/17/2007 2:01:58 PM | | I think people have said 'when hell freezes over" one too many times. | |

| The Big Chill Posted: 1/17/2007 3:46:04 PM | The only good thing about this weather was that all Government offices in Tarrant county were CLOSED!!!! I still haven't had a cuddle buddy, but at least I stayed in my footie jammies all day. I guess I need to get dressed, and act like a normal person. I will venture out into the cold and check my mail. Then I will come back in and have some hot tea.
STAY WARM EVERYONE!! | |

|
| The Big Chill Posted: 1/17/2007 8:45:20 PM | Well I watched the new(ish) 2-disc DVD of THE DEER HUNTER! Yeah, great flick. Emotionally overwhelming and definitely got my mind off being cooped up inside the house all day.
Also watched the ultimate cold weather/stay inside Simpsons episode. It's from way back in the 4th season where Homer decides to stay toasty inside and not brave the wintry weather to go to church. I think it's called "Homer the Heretic." Man, that bit where he complains how cold it is out and it cuts to the polar bear rummaging through the trash cans outside has me laughing everytime
Oh, and by the way, Yeah I know I'm late, but for next year, BOY AM I EARLY!
|
