| TORONTO FREAKS/GOTHS Posted: 10/16/2005 11:52:34 AM | I find this whole topic rather amusing. People claiming they want to be 'different,' but to do so have to look the part and all dress and appear the same. So what is Goth, other than a group of people seeking out others with similar tastes in clothing and/or lifestyles? How is that being different? Different than what you call the 'normal' people, yes, but we are all different. Embrace the differences and be yourself. Do you have to dress all in black to be different? Do you have to do things for the shock value, just to be different?
It reminds me of the whole 'Harley' lifestyle. Again people who claim they want to be different, all clamouring to dress the same, and ride the same bikes. Wannabe rebels sucked into a culture created and promoted by media and manuipulated by a massive marketing department. Harley Davidson Mtrs laughs all the way to the bank.

| TORONTO FREAKS/GOTHS Posted: 10/16/2005 1:40:13 PM | | The Goth Fashion Council needs to hold a meeting to come up with more practical 'goth gear' for the summer. I see these poor goth kids, running around in the summertime, dressed entirely in black clothing. That must be uncomfortable for them--partially because of the oppressive heat, and perhaps also because of equally oppressive peer pressure. I even observed a heavy trenchcoat or two at the peak of this summer's heat. Peer approval loses its meaning in the midst of a writhing heat stroke. | |

| TORONTO FREAKS/GOTHS Posted: 10/16/2005 8:12:54 PM | | I have to agree with 2tall on this one. It's almost like you are just wearing a costume be it goth, harley, hip hop etc. It is a style to a degree but when you are always wearing it, it just seems like a costume to me. I find it rather silly to see people wearing the whole Harley gear in winter when the bike is obviously put away. We get it, you own a bike. The bike doesn't make the person though. | |

| TORONTO FREAKS/GOTHS Posted: 10/17/2005 12:09:52 AM | hmmmm........many good points raised. I believe that everyone's different and yadayadayadayada but I also believe that the gothic culture is something to categorize as different on its own. And there's nothing wrong with that. Difference is what we celebrate in culture. Variety is the spice of life. I've noticed that some have made reference to the young kids that wear black in the summer. It is most likely that these kids aren't goth. It is more likely that they listen to a form of heavy/rebellious music that projects a gothically derived image that IS marketed by the media.
REAL gothic music isn't a real musical category but rather an artistic style that can be attributed to several different musical groups spanning across various genres. Although the genre Gothic/Darkwave does exist, elements of goth exist in heavy metal, industrial/electronic, pop/rock (in marketed form), and of course classical music. Yes, classical music. There are even several metal bands that mix opera with gothical themes while still yelling at the top of their lungs. I find it artistically superior to the more aggressive and let's say less.....ummm.....intelligent forms of metal. Goths are very uniqe as a category on its own. It goes totally beyond music. It sometimes involves a deep fascination with Medeival, Victorian, and Edwardian history. A sense of pacificism associated with solitude from mainstream society as well as a general appreciation for the light that can be brought out of the darkness are examples of the psychological implications of 'goth'.
Goth isn't something new either. The style goes back through our history to ....I don't know when. The term 'gothicism' is attributed to works of art and architecture. I've read literary critics that have referred to Mary Shelley and Bram Stoker's two famous classics "Frankenstein" and "Dracula" as gothically-inspired works.
Anyways the point is, the style is unique and unusual. But this is a good thing. It's to be celebrated.

| TORONTO FREAKS/GOTHS Posted: 10/17/2005 12:10:00 AM | | I love the gothic culture. I especially love the gothic women. You know how people talk about how it's an exotic adventure to have a sexual experience with another ethnicity? Well, what can be more exotic and fascinating than having one with a goth? | |

| TORONTO FREAKS/GOTHS Posted: 12/21/2007 8:58:25 PM | | I am goth but I don't think I have to dress up all the time to be goth true goth is more about being creative and being yourself and not following the norm. I am far from being a mundane and shocker I do have mostly all black clothes but every now and then I do like to inject some colour into things. Was hoping to find some other goths in the Peterborough area in here but doesn't look like there are to many of us. | |

| TORONTO FREAKS/GOTHS Posted: 12/22/2007 10:53:24 AM | I'm a rocker, but dress normal. Don't need to get dressed up to show what my veins bleed musically.
I love Gothic/vampirish clothing, at times I'll even sport it out.
But I usually keep it in the bedroom where I love wearing creative, freaky, and sexy clothing

| TORONTO FREAKS/GOTHS Posted: 3/14/2008 1:37:57 PM | | oh...people are still posting..silly me.. ive been on the "scene" for years, and as i DJ in goth clubs ive seena lot,..i dont dress to excess any more, that tends to happen more for the younger ones on the scene, and as i get older i dress in my own version more and more...which is still my new rock boots, black jeans, but with shirts and black leather box jackets...i call it the smart/scruffy goth look...lol | |
|
| TORONTO FREAKS/GOTHS Posted: 3/14/2008 2:16:27 PM | | i love the goth scene, i can't stop listening to the music so uplifting in truth, if it wasn't for a few factors i would go out and dress the look, but can't do that yet, o well, its still a great way of life, misunderstood yes, but still a great way of life. its upsetting that alot of Darkwave bands are calling it quits tho, i guess the scene isn't big enough to support the artists, at least when you take pirating into account | |
|
| TORONTO FREAKS/GOTHS Posted: 3/14/2008 8:30:23 PM | | People think I am a freak because I like Scifi, and i don't like partying, Sports or going to bars much. Oh yeah, Goths and "Freaks" are just as shallow as everyone else is, when to comes to someone different. | |
