| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 6/17/2007 1:35:42 PM | Oh and has anyone noticed that they often start their love letter with a "Hello Dear" or some other quirky formality. The word "Dear" is a clue and they talk about God a lot!! Yes, and their spelling is atrocious!!!!! I just got an email from one now. Actually had a very cute caucasion bad-boy rocker pic attached. I was almost (I said almost.. silly) confused. | |

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 6/18/2007 1:17:46 PM | I have not had any troubles on POF. On Facebook, I had a couple of suspicious letters from two 20 something year olds, who wrote very long letters saying how beautiful I am, and they want a relationship with only me. One was from Nigeria who said he was a "Prince" in his country and used a lot of religious terms. When I saw Nigeria, I quickly deleted his letter as I am aware of Nigerian scams. Even though he didn't ask for money, I know he was trying to flatter me and gain my trust because of how lengthy the letter is and he wanted to know everything about me ie: (what I do, what kind of house I live in, where I work etc., my hobbies, etc.) Another suspicious thing is I'm 46 and unless there is a scam going on, why are 20 something year old males wanting a relationship with me. I'm old enough to be their mother, why wouldn't they want someone closer to their own age.
Usually there is no more than a 10 year age difference when a younger male dates an older female. But when a 20 something from Nigeria wants to date a woman from Canada who's 20 to 30 years older, can you spell SCAM.

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 7/5/2007 7:18:46 AM | This has been around a while .. the country is so poor and corrupt government that they have to turn to crime to gain funds to survive. It doesnt make it right or condonable but just keep in mind that scamming is the 3rd form of income for this country!
Ok.. so lets keep some things in perspective and what you don’t know… can actually hurt you! We are all here for the same reason to meet someone and have a relationship but what happens when the person on the other side isn’t who they say they are? They have now preyed on your emotions and desire to be in a relationship to commit INTERNATIONAL BANKING FRAUD.
Wait that doesn’t sound right? Or does it? So lets look at the facts first:
As of 2004, there were 8.4 Million fully paid subscribers to over 1,000 internet dating sites. In fact, 1% of all internet activity is dating and romance related. The market was worth $516 million in 2005. On many dating sites, up to one third of all profiles are fake, virtually ensuring that any user who communicates with more than two other members will have an approach made by a scammer. Assuming just a 1% response rate, there are going to be at least 84,000 people who each stand to loose a relatively modest $1,000 each. The total losses in this scenario will work out to be more than $84 million, and that is in just one year.
Still don’t see the connection…
You know those letters you get, my dead uncle has all this money but I need perfect stranger to get it out of West Africa? Those are what are called Advanced Fee Fraud or 419 letters, (419 is the Penal code for the crime in Nigeria). Due to the bad press the government developed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and instilled the Commission Act of 2002. (Now ironically, the Clinton Administration was responsible for providing the technology initially to Nigeria and Ghana – nice thank you huh?) After the enforcement of the laws and the raids on numerous cafes, the criminals needed a new method of income because the average monthly income for a family in Nigeria is less than $50USD and with the exchange rate $100 USD is equal to $12K Naira which can pay for housing and food for 3 months or a full year of educational fees.
Patience Im getting there…
With the influx of the online dating sites they found their victims, lonely, romantic, recently single and ripe for the picking. Using techniques of social profiling, hours are spent scouring the sites targeting singles or unhappily married men and women between the ages of 35 and 65.
They provide an ear to listen to all the woes of the victim’s life details, children’s names, life stories and deep dark secrets. They use stolen photographs from various modeling websites and make-up sad stories of lost loves and family members. Days pass with love letters and e-cards, sometimes even flowers, chocolates and teddy-bears. Using a deliberate psychological breakdown of their victim’s physical state through sleep deprivation (intentional phone calls in the middle of the night), guilt, harassment, and most importantly create an emotional bond. This bond has the victims left feeling completely at ease with their new companion. The promises of love and a future together have blinded the victim and most sense of reasoning has been eliminated.
The “Perfect Mate” has to suddenly travel for business to West Africa, or is already on assignment. He will take ill or have an accident and be placed in the hospital without a means to pay for his hospital bill. It has been documented that robbery, loss of all monies and identification or most recently the mate is being held hostage by kidnappers or the police. Preying on the undying love they share with their prey, they zoom in for the kill begging for money to be sent via Western Union.
In some cases the scammer has United States Postal Money Orders that they cannot cash in their country and will send them to the victim in exchange for wiring the money back for plane fare, and incidentals as well as promising to be on the next flight home. When the Money Orders are returned counterfeit; the victim is left accountable; scammer disappears or seems to not know anything about the origin. Money Orders are not the only type of financial instruments; stolen bank checks have also been used.
In many cases, there is an additional reshipping scam. Criminals use stolen credit cards to purchase items online, have them sent to their “loved one”, and they in turn will forward them onto the criminal. For merchants, the order is placed and shipped, the cardholder requests a credit from the issuing bank of the credit card and chargebacks are created. The authorities are notified and the victim is held accountable.

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 7/11/2007 12:20:06 AM | Just wanted to add my two cents worth. About a month ago I was contacted by Johnsearching378 on here. He is a scammer that I reported to POF. He is also on yahoo and goes by "tolu454real" which of course is also his email address. The name he used with me is John Anderson. He said he was from Sweetwater, TN. I'm sure his location changes depending on who he is talking to. The picture he displayed on POF was that of a white man. He also had the same picture on yahoo messenger for while. Then it changed to that of a black man. When I questioned him about it he said it was his son. I suspect the picture he displays changes with the race of the person that he is talking to.
Something else that you all should be aware of but probably never thought about that apparently this guy has done. Depending on what woman he is preying on, all he has to do is look up where a woman lives and say he lives in a nearby city, county, etc. And chances are the scammer used Google Earth to locate a town close to where I live and created his scenario from that. ALSO you would be surprised what info is on the net that scammers would have access to. He gave me a specific address that he said he lived at ALONG with a specific name. How did he get it? Probably went to county tax records online. Those are very easy to access. Just go to your state's website and check for yourself.
Do not hesitate to ask for specifics when you are starting to get serious with someone. If the person is who they say they are, they won't mind giving you specifics that can be verified. That is the only way to keep yourself safe. Good luck and be very safe!

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 7/11/2007 12:41:09 AM | I was approached by one also. But not on this website. This man/woman was not all that good at what he/she does, but it's easy to miss the signs if you have no idea they exist. I'm glad this has come up on here. This man/woman could not speak/type English very well. He/she typed with an "accent". They are almost always in construction, engineering, architects etc. They are almost always divorced/widowed with 1 child. They are always working in another country and can't get home without your help. And yes, as one poster stated..they NEVER have a webcam.
I was getting close to trusting this person, luckily I have a close friend who had read about the Nigerian scams and she informed me. There is a website out there that has posted these people on them, pictures and names they use..both males and females. If you do a google search for romance scams..it comes up. Be careful. But don't fear them. They are truly too ignorant to succeed if we keep everyone informed. Happy

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 8/26/2007 11:48:32 AM | important information to all that are on other dating sites as well......
last month i was talking to a guy that said he was from maryland. he and i became close but he never asked me to send him money. i posted in the pa forums about some of the things.
anyway.....if you know how to run the netstat command to pull ip numbers then i suggest that you give it a shot...only if you feel as if the person is a scammer. now, in yahoo messenger it's going to show a bunch of numbers...the numbers that you want to look at are the foreign numbers (numbers communicating with your computer). you can download a whois program but it's only good for 30 days. what you do is key in the ip numbers at the bottom of the group of foreign numbers and find where they are coming from. that would show you the vicinity of where they're getting their connection through.
any emails.....there's a site that you can use to pull the ip numbers for that as well.
i've been talking to another guy this morning and busted him as well. i have pics, yahoo ip numbers, server ip numbers as well as stolen ip numbers plus his own from his email.
i'm not allowed to work so i might as well do something worthy to help rid some of these people. now, if there are any guys that have been scammed or approached by a scammer please feel free to contact me.....let's talk but only after i check you out as well.
oh, i almost forgot....these scammers are not only from nigeria but ghana and other places in africa as well as russia. they steal pics from innocent people like us or model sites and use them. trust me, i got enough on 2 other people as well plus the first guy that tried to have me send him over $1500. of mechandise purchased on stolen credit cards. i have that info as well.
oh inter-pol.........where are you?

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 8/26/2007 12:26:28 PM | Never mind the email scammers. I met one downtown in Atlanta Georgia. Those are even more annoying.
Me and my bf was driving through and we decided to park to find food. Parked in front of this big hotel and there was a black guy wearing suit. When I was parking he was directing me so I won't bump the jag behind me. So I thought he was working for the hotel or something. So after we got out of the car, we inquired about the local restaurants and he told us which ones were good or not good.
Then as we were about to head off, he started his "pitch" about how he's a preacher from L.A. that they invited to preach in Atlanta. How he traveled with 59$ in gas and now he had no more money. How his wife is ill and waiting in the car and how his son is dying with leukemia. So when he finished his 5 mins long rumbling about everything, he said to my bf "so brother, can you find it in your hear to help a poor guy?"
My bf looked at me, I happened to have all the cash on me since I carry a purse. So I looked at him and said. "Can I get this straight, you are invited from L.A. by a church here?"
He said "yes."
I said "do you have families here in Atlanta?" He responded "two daughters." I said "then why don't you phone your daughter to ask them for money?" (In my mind I was thinking, if you knew all the good restaurants around here, and you're not from here.....and you just got here......fishy)
He then proceeded to say "now you asked me for suggestions and I helped you. Now I need help and you won't help me. You will be punished by the good lord." I said "well that's definitely up to God to decide. Best of luck. bye"
I decided to take my just parked car and drive away........had my laptop in my truck. As we were driving away, I saw him giving the same speech (my window was open) to another guy.
BTW, I have met other scammers white, Asians and even crippled ones begging then hopping into a limo. So I don't think the race was a factor. Though one guy said he was a break dancer once and was begging for money for food. So I told him to do a dance. He did a brilliant dance and I gave him 5$. Though come to think of it, he should have gotten more for the dance. He even did a few flips on the cold Montreal street in the middle of Jan.

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 8/28/2007 4:18:03 PM | When I find scammers online, I scam them into making fools of themselves. I play along with the "I love you" and "lets get married" crap. This one scammer wanted money for his own computer so we could keep in touch. I told him my nephew will give me the money to give him, but he wanted to meet him online first. Here is the conversation they had. My nephew copied it and sent it to me. My nephew is also telling him lies to piss him off and worry him. Here it is.

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 8/28/2007 5:34:55 PM | Keep in mind that it's not just the Nigerians.... there's a whole host of fake German Lottery Commission notices, princes of countries you've never heard of, and many, many other scams going on.
Most target the elderly. I used to be in banking, and we saw a good number of them every year.

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 8/28/2007 6:35:52 PM | Using the term 'Nigerian Scammers' is akin to saying 'US invaders'.
This is the point where I say I HATE SCAMMERS AS MUCH AS EVERYONE ELSE!!!
However, it seems to me that this 'Nigeria scam' issue seems to be fast becoming another outlet for the homophobic and racist in this increasingly politically correct environment.
To enlighten the ignorant, let me say that there are Nigerian Engineers as well as Nigerians who are proficient in many languages and many times spell words better than native speakers, including English.
Just last week, someone in Saskatchewan (whom I have never met, except via webcam as I live in Alberta) asked me for money 'to buy drugs for her kids' who are sick because she cant afford 'heating for her home'. What do I look like, a benefits agency? May be she was Nigerian? No!
The point I am trying tomake is that paedophiles, criminals, drug addicts are in every society. And if you must know, western companies do more 'scamming' abroad than ordinary individuals abroad do to western people.
As a person of Nigerian descent, I am proud of my background and culture.
Africa bashing has becoming a favourite pasttime of western media and it is not cool.
I liked some of the posts I read earlier, such as harrassing the scammer, or deleting the email. For your information, I get scam emails. I forward them to the relevant enforcement agencies..At some point I could not even be bothered anymore. Its nuisance value is similar to crank callers and viagra adverts. And yes I am of Nigerian descent!
Its absolutely dumb and unbelievably ignorant to block a person simply because becaue they mention the word 'Nigeria'... It makes as much sense as bashing every US citizen because of the Iraq invasion.

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 8/28/2007 8:33:29 PM | Just had one contact me. Apparently, he says he got my IM id from POF, which doesn't show it. Then, he told me his id was brucedave44, but the IM showed brucedave55. Then, when I refused to give him any info, he started telling me how he was a man of God, and couldn't understand why I was so curious as to how he'd gotten my id. I blocked and reported him as a scammer.
Looked up his Yahoo! profile. First, he lists his age as 49 and living in the UK, then he says he's 43, living in Denver, Colorado. The picture? Some affeminate looking guy standing next to a limo, which you can see came from some ad or other. Supposedly he's a widower, I guess looking to scam widows. What a jerk.

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 8/28/2007 9:55:32 PM | It's SOOOOO funny. I picture these guys in their grass huts or whatever all looking at this shiny new computer and thinking up these scams, as if they were the only people in the world to do so. I mean someone should maybe send them a blanket letter drop like they did in iraq that says.
"Hey, we are on to you, so stop it"
LOL
Or maybe Nigeria has A LOT of royalty!!! :)

i did similar plays with some of them like areann, but not that extend though... it is getting fun sports though...
but waste too much of time though, i rather do some readings instead of wasting time on those fools..
