hi everyone. i am one of those that fell for a scam just over a year ago and it took me awhile to get it sorted out. i am on pof now and just recently received a message from someone on here and started chatting with them on yahoo. His english is very good and well written and seemed real. He stated he was from Alabama. Then he said something that really perked my ears up. I asked where abouts in the US. He stated that he was not in the US right now but in Nigeria doing some filming of some sort. What think guys and gals a scammer? He has even hid his profile on here. His nick on here is homealone_robert . Anyone been contacted by this man?

I got a bunch of them on Myspace and always wondered what they were after, why they wanted me to e-mail them off the page. But see I always thought they were after my e-mail addy and never could figure out why. They actually ask you to send money huh? Well now I might play with them, I figured it was a scam but thought they were trying to get info to Hack my computer.

I wouldn't take the risk. Why would someone hide their profile just like that?

I had someone mail me the other week and in his first mail he asked for my e-mail so he could discuss an important issue with me... LOL
He claimed to be in Miami but his e-mail domain was french.
I keep him talking on POF for a while and then reported him.

I think that I am in contact with a scammer. I don't know how to feel. I was on another site and this very good looking guy with a wonderful profile contacted me.

He allegedly lives in New York and has a beach house in Cyprus and Chard. He now has a contract to design a hotel in ...... Nigeria .... lagos to be exact!

He has not yet asked me for any favors, but his conversation is very money orientated. His grasp of the English language is not very good. There are other red flags too.

Part of me is a little disappointed because if it was real it could have been great. Part of me is amused. It is my first .... and the first time is usually special I don't know whether to play or block! There is a very small part of me reluctant to do either as "what if he is for real".

I will probably have a bit of fun then block. I certainly will not give any money! He did know that Portsmouth was near Southampton so he has done some homework

Oh I live in England so it not just the Americans that have to put up with this!

I too had the scam. Supposedly an American from Ohio, architect, in Nigeria doing a job. we chatted IM and I believe we met on yahoo personals. He game me an american name and address in Ohio, which I googled and yep it was there, so I did begin to feel somewhat comfy. As time went on, it ended up he was robbed and was 1000 miles from U.S. embassy (flag, 1000 miles in Nigeria, don't think so), so on and so on, I began to play, just for fun. I told him I was getting him the money and we would talk again tomorrow. So when tomorrow came, I told him I got the money, but on the way home, i saw this homeless family and my heart went out to them, so I gave them the money instead, hope that he understood, and I was sorry I couldn't help him. He got So......mad! However, beware! I saw him again on this site, different name, occupation, etc, all checking out again. (he didn't change the picture) So I turned him in.

You have to be so careful about these African originated scams. I was talking to a frind of mine the other evening and she shocked me when she said that she'd been conned out of £10,000 a few years ago by one of them.

You have been warned!!!

Now onto a much more interesting subject. My Uncle, who was the chief Rabbi in a diamond mine, managed to save over $100 million in the 5 years he worked there. Unfortunatley he was tragically killed in an accident while milking a llama. The government don't believe that he managed to save so much and are trying to take the money away from us. We need your help to get it out of the country and we will give you 25% of it if you let us transfer it into your account. We need $100,000 to get things underway so please send it to...................

I've been reading correspondence between a few of them and a person who is pursuing these kind of letters. Some of them are hilarious. Just check this one out...

http://www.whatsthebloodypoint.com/mails.php?scamno=6&mailno=3
Scan through the opening mail to the respons, the guy who is doing this have posted his letters in blue and the scammer's in red.

LOL there was a man on POF who said he was from Florida but once you talk awhile, he says he is an engineer working in Nigeria LOL gee that country's popular. Talked to another woman here he has contacted - we were receiving the same emails LOL Turned out he was looking for a place to stay when he came to Canada...... I am sure he would have been looking for money as well.

Oh and he explained his poor english by saying he was Dutch. LOL

tribe net has a group that will actually go seek out these scammers - it is kind of fun to read what they do to them. LOL

I was always scared they could hack into my computer so I never chatted with them. (Not sure if they could or not.)

Not through an IM they can't. They aren't anymore connected to your computer than you are to theirs.

The only hope they have of getting in is if they send you a file of some sort and you open it. And its unlikely they would be trying that anyway. It would take a LOT of IT knowledge and hardware to exploit something like that. They are confidence tricksters using a computer, not hackers.

Don't over estimate their computer knowledge, most of them really aren't that smart.

They try to get you hooked up with AOL, IM to give their tale of woe for your bucks, - cyberspace - space - the unknown!

Talking to the bank - -
it can take up to 3 weeks for a check from an other country to clear the bank
even certified checks take that long - - - - may look good but are not from a bank
and are forged - - -

and you get lots of pressure from the sender to send the extra back and to ship - - -

they know how long it will take you to find out it was a bogus check

Design does not mean be there

My brother designed the VA hospital in Seattle from OK, where he lived.

have him give you proof, name of his company, Name of the company that wants the hotel built, Proof of other work done - - - you do not design a hotel by yourself - - - it is a team of people - - - -

but if it sounds like it is too good to be true - - - it most likely is - - - -

lack of English in NY - - that is very common - - lots of imports, and they stay with their culture - - and many never really learn english - - beyond a passing level - - - - - - Being from NY does not mean born in America - - - -

but a person of this level - - to be able to design a Hotel - - - - on contract - - - -

If it is something more than a small - - - 20 room motel - - - the charge by the designers - -
for a large modern hotel will be close to the $1 Mill area - - - which is still small compared to the cost of the motel - - - - Note the designers get in the area of 1 to 3% of the total cost of the Hotel if not more - - - - The amount of details is large - - they have to consider each light fixture - - each electrical outlet, the plumping, and all of the local building codes - - - and if really a modern - - innovative design - - could be as high as 10% - - - so why would he ever need to ask you for any money - - - if he does - - run fast - - - unless he is simply the lowest person on the design team - - - one step above the person that empties the trash can's each day - - -

So in this regard - he would not need any money from you as he would be wealthy - - - -
and most that are wealthy do not want to flaunt the money they have - - - they want to be wanted for themselves - - - and not to have scammers and sorts of people with good money making ideas coming at them - - or charities - - - - everyday - - and believe me they will be after any one with money - - - - - People with money put up means to stop these people - - - - that is develop means to stop these people - - - - - -

It is easy to simply make up a name and see if it shows up.

Some of the people locater sites will ever suggest names close to what you entered - - -

all in terms of trying to help you find someone - - - -

So it is very easy to fake a google search - - that is make it come up looking real - - -

If you cannot see them "live" .. RUN.

What about people like me that simply does not have a cam, or is interested in purchasing such equipment, nor wants to see other people in cam?

Western Union for a reason

They know the money is good - - - -

You send a check - - it might not be good - - - -
they know they - - they send out a lot of bogus checks

Western Union you have to give them the money and then they
send information or you do to the receiver - - to know it is there - -
with that information and basic ID. They get the funds - - - now - -

before you have a chance to think about what you have done or mention this to others
so they can tell you how crazy you are - - - -

as for robbed - - and passport taken - - - - She is not trapped in the Hotel - -
she can call or go to the US Embassy and they will help - - - that is part of their job - - - and function

So bogus story also

To see if they are what they say they are

A live cam would show you that she is white and blond as she says or is black and fat - - -

note the scammers will be running dozens of these at one time - - not just with you - -
they have been doing this for a while so they know what they are doing and have standard responses - - - - all worked out

and first aspect is to see if the person is who they say that they are - - - a photo does not show that or prove that they are - - - -

Yes, they've been around from most all countries from Russia to Africa to our dear of US of A... I have been approached more times than I can count by way of IM's as well as e-mail on yahoo (as it was also on AOL) by these scammers... never & I repeat never have I gone into a yahoo chat room so they have other means of getting the addresses... the best rule of thumb is "there are no free lunches" should keep most of us out of range of the scammers...

Have been getting a lot of those Nigerian scammers on my direct e-mail

The stories that are comeing up with !

Iraq General has been killed and has no family, but just before he was killed he put into a bank $18,000,000 and they are prepared to split it 50/50 if I send all my details phone numbers, bank details etc.

The American deaf association need someone in England to handle there donations, just send me all your details and we will pay you $50,000 per year !

I have won the Lottery £10,000,000 just send all my details to them . .

It look's like they are after two things 1/ For you to send your total details so that they can try and scam your bank account or 2/ at some point asking for money for some reason in the scam, but it always must be sent via cablevia Western Union I think they said ?

Them: I have removed my profile when I found you, would you remove yours too?
Me: I've never visited that site, did not make whatever profile you are referring to and now, will never visit that site because you asked me to and I don't know you.
Them: But you are the love of my life.

Please be so very careful... the more we get the word out about these international scams the better!! There was a guy on here - Levy40, alledgedly from Dallas TX in the UK on business... then came the scam... A client needed to pay him that was here in Dallas, could I accept the money, cash the check and wire it to him... ummmm NO!! I have ran into too many to mention from various dating sites.. no site is "safe". I worry so much for the people that are not informed and fall into these traps....

best of luck to all!!!
