I don't know how anyone can be fooled by these scammers to be honest .

ALL of them who have tried me have been more or less obvious and very sketchy...I feel like even if you aren't aware of the Nigerian Scams, something is off about them and most of their stories follow along the same lines, they can't even try to be original. The stuff they are asking and saying often makes no sense and I immediately wonder why would anyone ask complete strangers to wire them money and all this other stuff.

But I guess some people do fall for it...don't see how...but I guess.

These scammers usually look for emotionally wounded individuals with a "God fearing / loving" overemphasis. They play on their need for companionship....even if it's only an online fantasy.....and then they hook them in by wild stories of bad things they are trying to rectify (with your money of course) in their lives.

You do have to be somewhat callous to people you never met in person. Doesn't mean you have to be a complete jerk.....but sorry...when it comes to your money or your desires for a partner.......don't let yourself get hooked into anything unless you've met several times and in a safe place. Remember....there's not only money scams going on.....but abduction and/or rape and/or identity theft scams as well out there.

Scammers like that come from all over, also from USA. I had a few with the same 'handwriting' as I call it.
Usually a few years younger (hoping I feel flattered), with a kid to look after (appealing on my mother-instinkts) , they 'fell in love with me first time they saw my picture', wealthy enough for me to stop working when I marry them, and they want to marry me ASAP.
Then they have to go on a business-trip first before they collect me (mostly in Gahna), run into financiel trouble and hope I can lent them the money which they will pay me back with interest.
First time this happend to me, I smelled a rat when he ask me for money to help him pay the 'import-duty on 88 cars he exportet', because it was more then he expectet and he only deals with cash. .
I told him I have no money to lent him and he got upset, wantet me to lent it from the bank for him. Told him that I wont lent a man I never met money and as business men neither would he. Never heard of him again.
The next ones with simular stories I just told after they ask me if I found somebody online, that I met some 'sleezeballs' online, who are either after sex or money. Then they insured me, that they are not like that. Interesting, scammers never ask for sex! They usually have plenty money and then they wanted to know what I did to those others, and I told them that I told those sleeazeballs, ' I have no money'. Next question was something like: 'how was their reaction'? To which I answered: ' I never heard from them again'. After that they 'had to go now' and 'will contact you tomorrow'.
'If tomorrow never comes'...
It did the trick a few times and is amusing me by now how predictable they are...

Without fail they have such broken English!

One fellow tried to tell me he was a British lawyer ...and his secretaries handle everything for him so his English isn't a problem. Yeah right, got a law degree but never learned proper English.

Every single one that has every contacted me has had bad English. Dead give away.

Yeah, just ignore them. I had quite a few run-ins with them as well on Yahoo some months back. I keep ignoring them, but they keep on coming back, persistent little buggers.

Recently I have been getting younger men sending me messages in broken
english and all lived in Alexandria Ohio. Since it is close to me, I know a bit about it. It has one traffic light, no commerce, unless you count the gas station. They say that they make in excess of $100,000 a year. There are no businesses in that town which would pay anyone that much. They profess undying love and have never looked at my profile. They use the same phrases, like "I will like to meet someone" or " I will love to meet you". One sent me his e-mail address which ended in .co.uk which means it came from the United Kingdom, usually England. They say they lived for years in Holland, but I have dutch friends and they don't misuse the english language in the same way.
I just delete- block. Must be a lot of lonely people here. Sad.

I don't remember the specific email, but somehow over six months ago I was scammed merely by an email. They used it to order a voicemailbox and unlimited longdistance service to my phone bill. It was charged under "Billing Resources" - only $8 something a month so I thought it was some extra taxes or whatever until I called recently to change my service. I was able to get the co. name Agora Solutions and also the info (probably bogus) on the individual - I reported them to the FTC and locals. They are so sneaky.

I just received a message from someone here on POF who I am 99.9% sure was a Nigerian scammer. What a beautiful picture of the model!

I reported him .... and poof! He is now gone!

Report them. They should not be here on POF! ... or anywhere else.

This guy also immediately wanted me to converse with him on his yahoo id.

I know how the song and dance goes ..... I still find it amazing that anyone would give money to a complete stranger!

Africa bashing has becoming a favourite pasttime of western media and it is not cool.

I agree! I am proud of Africa- a beautiful continent with a beautiful people that provided me with a home for the last 18 years!!Its not like the US doesnt have its fair share of criminals and scammers! It just saddens me that anything "backward" or "negative" is always associated with MY continent!
FYI- I learnt English in the heartland of Africa and BELIEVE me I speak and write it much much better than my American collegues!!

There is a website that has very good info about these love scams, and all other scams. I am not sure if I can post the addy but.

Most of the people here on POF are fully aware of the advance fee fraud scams, but there is still good info about them, and the other is a place to help warn other people .

To the mods if I was wrong by placing the addys, then I am sorry

EarthnFire and Love-Hate,

You are both correct!
There are great people in every culture and ethnicity!
There are scammers in every culture and ethnicity!

I know that the scam that was tried on me was from a person who was Nigerian.
... and then when I found out that the pattern of these scammers who were Nigerian was common, I was very surprised ......... especially when they still continue the same pattern..............

I can see why you would feel this is racist with a term such as "Nigerian scammer"...... since this could lead people to believe that all Nigerians are scammers, which is not true!

Simply calling them scammers and showing others the pattern these scammers follow should be sufficient.

One sent me his e-mail address which ended in .co.uk which means it came from the United Kingdom, usually England

For an e-mail address, this dosen't tell you anything about where he is. It only shows that he has an e-mail account with a provider in the UK. You can get a e-mail address from hotmail.co.uk, for free, no matter where you are. This applies to any other territory.

A website with [some-name].co.uk is a company inside the UK. A website called [some-name].com can be anywhere in the world, many people assume it's in the US.

Any takers? In the end two weeks later your responsible for the cashing of forged Wallmart money orders. Be careful!!!!

i have come across a man who says he is from my local area and is a humanitarian.
However he is at the moment in nigeria trying to raise moneyfor a boy with a brain tumor.
He speaks broken english and is on yahoo. He told me his daughter is in a Sweedish school.
and is waanting to come home after, he said this mission.
He was telling me how he could not wait to come home and meet me.
He was telling me he was in africa to try and raise money for a little 6yr old boy who has a brain tumor. Etc.. I offered to raise some money here for him. and he went so excited. I asked for proof. He sent me a unsigned letter and a document account with typed proceedures on it no prices but in biro a price was written.
also a photo of a boy.

what do you all think is this a scam or not, i am very confused.

Everybody has to keep a bloody wary eye out these days for these wankers. They have been using IM for quite awhile now that I am aware of ! I used to reside in the USA for over 5 years and during that time I was contacted by quite a few "Scammers" . Firstly through dating sites and them after through IM. I was constantly asking as to how they got my IM as well as my email addy., I never got a straight answer. What they did ( and I played along with them for awhile ) was pretend to be a female and looking to get a male friend and usually from the UK, but working in Nigeria or Ghana etc, then they endevour to hit you up for some cash ( once they believe they have befriended you ) for cheques that they will be getting for work that they have done, or for antiques that they are selling of buying. For whatever reasons they are unable to negotiate the currency themselves. I had on send me many explicite pics and also saying that they were going to the USA and wanted me to be there escort whilst they were in my part of the country and promised evrything and anything and believe me I mean anything !
I weas able to use a false address as well as an email addy . I never gave any TRUE personal details and had the last laugh, when I had one of them on IM and I was telling them that I needed to get there real phone number as I was in trouble with the local constablary and they were in contact with Interpol, who was wanting to contact them regarding cheques that I had banked ( I went NO where near a bank and also never even opened the delivery parcel ! ) Only to have them quickly disconnect and NEVER to be heard from again !
Be aware at all times, both sexes ! Remember, there is NO such a thing as a free lunch !
I had my fun for awhile and now I just simply " DELETE "

Met one on here a week ago today. Smooth talker and we communicated daily until someone gave me the heads up about watching out for clues that this person wasn't who he said he was. Miraculously, when I confronted this person through text, and email about how I wasn't about to be a victim to Nigerian fraud, his profile all of a sudden disappeared from here and the sweet-talking emails, texts, and yahoo chats stopped! Hmmm...go figure! I'm not gonna say I'm not hurt by this but I'm certainly glad it didn't go any farther and no money was lost, either! However, now I trust even LESS than I used to before! I'm beginning to wonder if it's even worth trying anymore!
