| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 10/6/2008 3:58:26 PM | How do i find out if this is a scam, Please help me......confused
If you think it's a scam, then it probably is. Scam's are usually easy to spot, if he asks for money, its a scam. If he is proclaiming how much he loves you and never met you, its a scam. If he has bad grammar or spelling, it's a scam (or he's dyslexic).
Usually a scammer will have a picture he has got from a website. A model agency site or any number of places, perhaps even a plenty of fish profile (not mine though). One giveaway is that they often have only one picture of themselves. Ask him for another.
If you want more proof just ask for details of his life, ask about his work, where he's lived, where he went to school. His favourite music, things he likes to eat, his favourite films (African scammer's have no idea about our films or music). Scammer's will avoid answering these questions.
You can also try making deliberate mistakes in you messages, mix up people's names, use the wrong name for somebody. Most scammers are running a number of different scams on different people, it can be quite hard for them to remember who they are pretending to be to each person. Send him a picture of someone really famous (Angelina Jolie, Madonna, Kiera Knightly) and say its your daughter, see if he recognises them.
It's easy to spot a scammer, the problem really is that some people don't want to see the obvious truth. They want to believe the person is real.

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 10/6/2008 5:58:06 PM | Yep, all you have to do is check out the various anti-scammer websites that deal with dating scams from Nigeria and Russia. You'll have to take some time to look since there are so many scammers on those sites. But I'm sure you'll see a pic of the scammer whose been sending you messages. But remember, those pics are not of the scammers, but stolen pics.
Also, try using colloquialisms in your conversations, that you know the other person should understand, if they really are from where they say they come from. If they have no idea what you're talking about, then that's a dead give away.

Always start out with conversations about them being americans stuck in nigeria and needed money to get food, or home. lol. what a joke ! i hope no one really falls for that stuff

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 4/7/2009 4:21:57 AM | | I got contacted on 3/22/09 on POF by a guy named John Johnson. His profile was jsheart. Really smooth, very nice, asked me to send him $1500 after one week talking by way of computer, and yes I was stupid, by calling him. Couldn't get a web cam, couldn't do skype. So the long and the short of it is; be careful. They can really suck you in. Pissed me off big time. I told him off in an email. I saved all the emails and the pictures because now I am worried about someone getting my identity (aren't we all afraid of that now a days?) I know there are decent people out there, like me. | |

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 4/8/2009 1:41:10 PM | Ive had messages here on POF from the scammers. They are so obvious in the vocabulary, the way they phrase things. I knew he was a scammer, curious what he was up to. His story changed a lot. He lived in Cincinnati, but had to go out of the country on business. I asked him what was the name of the Cincinnati baseball team. he didnt know. he tried to bluff his way by saying he wasnt into sports. You dont live within 500 miles Cincinnati and not know the Cincinnati Reds. I got a message last night and another one today from different scammers. one of them wants my yahoo ID, to talk through yahoo. and wont email through POF. | |

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 4/8/2009 6:05:46 PM | I wonder if men are targetted much more than women? I get these *all* the time. Just for fun I carried on an IM conversation with one for ~an hour, a couple of years ago.
She was from New York (but had very poor grammar - I suppose one could say the same of many North Americans these days!)
She was travelling overseas (guess where) selling art, and her money/credit cards had been stolen, so the hotel was holding her hostage until she got the money to settle her bill. Could I help her with just $500? (lol) Once that tiny obstacle was overcome, she would rush to Kingston into my loving arms, for purpose of making babies for me. (lol!!)
So I asked her if she had any jewelery she could sell. She said yes, she thought there was someone there in the hotel who would buy her necklace! Sure enough, that fetched $250 - Halfway there already!
Next, I suggested she sell her body to men around the hotel to raise more money. After all, the pictures she had shared were stunning - Surely there was a market for that! The conversation got more and more surreal from there... And "she" doggedly persisted!
Shoot, I regret that I didn't save that IM conversation for posterity - It was gold!

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 4/18/2009 11:11:42 PM | Sadly, a lot of the Xtian dating sites are chock FULL of scammers. I mean like tons and tons! I got weary and worn out reporting them on one...I even got a "he checks out and is real!" from an admin a couple beers short of a six-pack. I finally gave up. I found that ironically, the PAID sites are the ones that scammers really take over! The admins don't seem clued in...and are actually very lazy about finding and blocking scammers. I got so tired of "hi dear you are so beautiful! I am a widower with a dog that lives in Florida" type e-mails.
I finally am leaving my profile on POF even though finding a bible-believer that lives near me and likes mouthy cutting edge bbws seems like a shot in dark. But at least here I can read the forums, play with imeem (currently have my favorite video/song from my fave Bollywood film of all time up)...and read such interesting profiles/ads. It amuses me. And best of all, it's free. Props to the owner keeping the &@%#! scammers down to a minimum. I am liking this place more and more...and giving up on the Xtian sites sadly. I only date believers 2 Cor. 6:14-16 but I haven't the patience and bandwidth to weed through anymore John Smith the Nigerian scammer e-mails hitting me up with his model LA good looking photos using very lame bad English, calling me endearments.
This place blows away most paid sites and sadly protects it's users better than most of the paid websites out there. And the men on here for the most part actually take time to read my profile before replying. I am rambling so I bid y'all adieu.

I got so tired of "hi dear you are so beautiful! I am a widower with a dog that lives in Florida" type e-mails. Anybody who calls me 'dear' or professes instant 'love' or uses the line 'age is just a number' when I query the 20-year age difference is a scammer for sure.
Their profiles say they are all from western countries, but they've apparently all taken a package holiday to Africa when I ask them how the weather is in whatever town they are supposedly in.
I specifically state I'm not interested in women who aren't near my age or location and I get the 'age is just a number' or 'distance doesn't matter when you're in love' crap.
All of them want you to chat on MSN and want your email address to send spam.
They are thieves and liars and deserve to be exposed and shut down.

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 4/19/2009 6:43:05 AM | I got these on MySpace. These scammers are easy to spot, their emails are all basically the same, the profile is new and there's only one photo posted.
If I'm bored I reply and tell them I reported them to the authorities. The first email below is from a scammer I told that I reported him.
Sometimes I check out their friend's list to see if any women are falling for the scam. I contacted one woman the other day and she was grateful for the head's up. Sad that so many women fall for this crap.

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 4/19/2009 12:56:59 PM | I was on Match.com and on 2 separate occasions these guys foud me on Yahoo. They started IM me. When the 2nd came around I already learned of the Nigeria scam from the first. The frst apparently sent stolen merchandise, wanting me to Fed Ex it to Nigeria.
The 2nd actually sent me flowers from a florist (which no one ever has) said the same thing. He had a store in Nigeria and wanted me to send stuff. Nope! I reported both and cut all ties.

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 4/19/2009 5:23:20 PM | you just found this out? many scammers have been using yahoo IM for several years; thanks though.
Anyone sending money to someone they've never met is a fool and deserves to be taken. People need to get their heads out and stop being so naive, then expecting people to feel sorry for them when it happens.

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 4/21/2009 11:03:59 AM | Hi,
Got contacted by a user on another site called 'Jane Asare' who seemed like a very nice girl and after a few messages to each other via the site she asked me for my Yahoo Messenger addy. Once on there We resumed talking about life in general as before, when all of a sudden she said that her phone had broken and needed money sending over for a new one.
I said "No" and went on with the chat. She asked me again about 15mins further down the line. Again, I changed the subject. I said "how do I know who is behind that picture on my messenger". I was pretty annoyed because when it came to he turn to reply she just said "yah..oh yeh" I then tested her and mentioned money. The enthusiam in her writing moved up a notch. She was all attention then.
Then she asked me to put my cam on to prove that she was the girl in the picture. She was. But then she suddenly whipped off her top being completely topless, and text "all this and the rest of my body is yours if you send the money". When I said no again she immediately covered herself up with a towel and said "you must be gay boy not to want me" and switched off cam and went off line. I never heard from her again. I did a IP track scan and the source was located in Sunnyvale, California.
I was shocked to think just how low people can go to con you out of money. I also got satisfaction from getting on over on these low-life scum . Anyway she gave me the following details:
Doku Archibald P.O.Box536 Accra GHANA
(she was very cunning, she used her father's first name (Archibald) for the name of the P.O. Box)
If anyone else has had this address, or similiar P.Box put to them, or has encountered this Jane Asare could you please let me know or keep a look out for this scammer.

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 4/21/2009 2:30:50 PM | | I have gotten a lot of these type messages on MySpace, Yahoo Messenger, and other social sites. My first experience was with MySpace. His picture showed a blond hair, blue eyed white male who said he worked for a charity organization in Sunnyvale, CA but was overseas in South Africa building a shelter for homeless orphans. I, being naive at the time, bought into his scam for a couple of weeks until he asked for money. I told him I was the wrong person for money and could he give me a loan. Funny thing, I never heard from him again. One from another dating site said he was born in Brazil and raised in Brazil and England. He now lived in New Orleans. We talked a little but never got to the money part. He had a lot of difficulty with the English language. But to tell you the truth, a lot of men I've talked to and actually met have trouble with the written English language. When I asked him a simple question in English, he did not understand it. So I translated it into Portugeze, the official language of Brazil. When he told me he did not speak Portugugeze, I knew I had a scammer on line and told him so. I just got an IM on Yahoo, who just popped up trying to sell me something. I told him no way, no how and to never contact me again. Then I blocked him. Its gotten so ridiclous , out of 12 emails I received in one day on Yahoo, 10 were from different people that I have either won or inherited from someone 100,000 dollars. Like I have a distant relative in China or Nigeria. I use to go the extra mile and notify Yahoo Help about these emails, but nothing changed. Now I just mark them as Spam and go on. I am so tired of these people. But what I worry about is older people being sucked into these scams. | |

| Apparently those Nigerian scammers are using Yahoo messenger now... Posted: 4/21/2009 3:36:28 PM | Yea,yeap here too-I have received 3 letters from these scammers. One after another. The story goes as follows................I am widowed ,had one child who died of cancer at the age of 9.All my relatives are gone-I am allllllllll alone(translation "feel sorry for me").I am 50 years old and work for an organitation where I care for homeless children in Nigeria. KEEP IN MIND THAT THEY WILL NEVER ASK ANYTHING PERSONAL ABOUT YOU.IF YOU TELL THEM ABOUT YOUR DRAMA THEY WILL NOT EVER SAY "I AM SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT IT ETC. AFTER ABOUT ONE WEEK THEY MAKE THE "HIT"WHERE THEY "NEED YOU FINANCIALLY".DO NOT GET INVOLVED. THEY MAY GIVE YOU A PHONE#TO CALL BUT THE CONNECTION IS ALWAYS BAD-THEY DO NOT WANT YOU TO ASK TOO MANY QUESTIONS ,SINCE THEY HAVE TO KEEP THEIR STORIES LINED UP WITH ALL THEIR VICTIMS. the third guy who send me a letter I responed to him immediately by asking him...how many days until you need money and how much......just be careful! That's all. | |
