| What makes Michigan rock ?? Posted: 2/10/2007 6:09:16 PM | All the people posting negatives, please stop. This post is a positive place. Start a thread with what makes Michigan suck if you would like. I love Michigan. I have a wonderful job at a wonderful hospital. I love mackinac with the beautiful bike trails and hiking, Grand haven with the little shops, Muskegon (my own place) for its beautiful lakeshore, music festivals, state parks, winter sports complex, kayaking on the river, Rothbury has its wonderful Double JJ Ranch with its rodeos, water park, fall fun, and horseback riding. Now, by the way, Muskegon is getting a bike week! Tons and tons of motorcycles. Ohhhh, and we have an awesome bike trail. We have vacationed outside of Michigan, but for the last few years, my family has stayed in Michigan because EVERY community has something wonderful to brag about. Lets keep our money local folks! | |

| What makes Michigan rock ?? Posted: 2/24/2007 7:48:07 PM | There are certainly negatives about Michigan (as there are for every State), but I thought the post was for things that make Michigan rock. If people want to ****, start yourself another post called something like "Things that make Michigan suck" and keep your comments over there.
I personally am a life long Michigander that is looking to move out of State until the economy does improve.
Things that make Michigan rock:
The Detroit Red Wings!!!!!!!
The Detroit Pistons!
The Detroit Lions (OK I went too far with that, but I am a diehard)
More freshwater than any other place on the planet.
Not only more registered pleasure boats (per capita anyway) than any other State, but if you are lucky enough to live on the east side, you get the pleasure of seeing the longest freighters in the world as well as Navy training vessels, Coast Guard Cutters, Ocean going freighters, Tall Ships and many other interesting and beautiful vessels.
Hundreds if not thousands of miles of trails designated for ORV, ATV and snowmobiles (and the trails are groomed in the winter). Skiing (water and snow). Some of the most beautiful golf courses in the country. And just about any other outdoor activity you can think of.
Being an avid backpacker, hiker and enthusiastic (albeit very amateur) mountain biker, I can say that the National Forests, State and local parks are spectacular. I have had the pleasure to use them from "The top of the mitt" to Ann Arbor and have never been disappointed. I have a 10 backpacking trip planned for August of this year to Isle Royale and I am looking forward to it like the way a child on Christmas Eve looks forward to waking up on Christmas Day. I have heard and read that backpackers from around the country view Isle Royale as one of the premier spots in the U.S. to visit.
We have fishing and hunting that is arguably the best in the country (unless you are deep sea fishing of course).
Canoeing, kayaking and tubing on the endless rivers and tributaries.
I once heard a customer of mine, from England, compare the personal time of Michiganders to that of Europeans. He had said that Europeans will take all their vacation time and leave their respective countries for weeks at a time, while most Michiganders rarely leave the state and take short vacations almost every weekend.
It is a beautiful state and offers a lot of diversity. For the originator of this thread, do some homework, spread your wings and enjoy yourself.

A starting point is www.michigantrails.org
There are 1,400 miles of rail-trail and over 600 more miles in linear trail extensons .
The Rails to Trails Conservancy is a great organization

| What makes Michigan rock ?? Posted: 3/14/2007 12:01:10 AM | Lots of great things have been listed -- but so far no one has mentioned the West Side of the State:
GR is an awesome revitalized city -- great theater -- great shows -- awesome architecture (2 Frank Lloyd Wright homes) home of the late 38th President, Gerald Ford; and home of the only Presidential Museum in the State. G R is also home to the "Medical Mile" (medical school and major hospital and major medical research institutions).
There are the State Parks and the lighthouses and the beaches of West Michigan; the Musical Fountain in Grand Haven; the Sand Dunes at Silver Lake and The National Parks of Sleeping Bear Dunes and Pictured Rocks (in the UP). The UP is also home to the only "mountains" in Michigan -- the Porkies.
There are two Fine Arts Camps (Blue Lake and Interlocken) and several Equity Theaters (both year round and summer stock).
Traverse City is also an awesome City with its two bays and winery on the Pennsulia.
We have many 4 year universities (both public and private) that provide great educations, including "the Harvard of the West" -- MICHIGAN one of the leading universities in the country. Michigan is home to 5 law schools and two Medical Schools.
And of course Michigan is home to the awesome Wolverines (GO BLUE :)
There is much that has already been said that makes Michigan Rock :) so I won't repeat what has been previously stated.
As with anything you get out of it what you put into it. If you look for the negative that is what you will find. You don't have to have alot of $$ to enjoy all the good things Michigan has to offer.
Michigan is a GREAT state (true we have our problems but so does everywhere -- the grass is always greener someplace else). I am proud to be a Michiganian.

What i think makes our little state rock is our 4 seasons!! We have Spring where everything springs back to life,,including people! lol I love it when i see those first little buds on the trees,,,and the first of my Peonies poking thru the soil reaching for the warm sun. Those bright yellow Daffodils that bloom nice'n early which gives me a great feeling that summer is on its way. Summer,,,so much to do! We have our many many lakes and rivers for boating, swimming, float downs, fishing. The small town festivals and carnivals are always a good time! The concerts by the lakes. Loads and loads of great camping places and hiking trails. Fall of course we have the most beautiful colors! Driving or Riding thru our many many country roads just looking in awe ,,,and not to mention the old old barns that still exist in Michigan. Picturesque really,,with the fall colors and the barns! (sappy i know,,but thats me lol) The Cider Mills, the hayrides, the crunch of leaves under your feet when you hear the kids running up to your house on Hallowoon night. Winter,,,tho im not a winter person,,,i surely can appreciate the beauty of snow when you look out your window and see everything unmarked,,undriven on. So pretty! We have many places for skiing, snow mobiling,,,,,and the frozen lakes and rivers for ice fishing, ice skating. The snowball fights,,,making snowmen.
We do have a BEAUTIFUL state!

| What makes Michigan rock ?? Posted: 3/15/2008 2:31:19 PM | "What makes Michigan rock ??"
The occasional earth quake
The disrepair of roads makes my truck rock
Big waves on a lake makes a boat rock
A wild woman in bed...ok, so it doesn't rock the whole state but it rocks my part of it if I remember correctly

We get to do it all since we get 4 seasons - one more reason Michigan Rocks.
Speaking of rocking - 2 Michigan bands in the news lately I heard something on the radio about Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers reuniting with Tobyy Redd for some local event in 2008.
Stadium Arcadium 2006 album has numerous references to Michigan Anthony Kiedis was born in Grand Rapids Chad Smith grew up in Bloomfield Hills

| What makes Michigan rock ?? Posted: 3/20/2008 1:24:14 PM | Faygo, Awesome Beautiful (Sometimes sweltering Summers) Our beaches, DETROIT! Our Seasons! (We have all 4! Well 5 if you count construction) | |
|
| What makes Michigan rock ?? Posted: 4/20/2008 6:45:34 AM | I like that there are four distinct seasons... they don't have that everywhere. There are TONS of fun outdoor activities to do here! Winter and summer! The economy might be declining... but there are definitely jobs if you look and don't mind going to school... try nursing (either human or animal), they are really looking for good nurses and assistants.... @:) | |
