| Tips on stopping Smoking Posted: 1/31/2007 2:47:29 PM | I can also endorse Allen Carr's book, its what worked for me and I have not smoked for more than 8 years now. Its funny but I read the book with an open mind but had absolutely no intention of becoming an ex-smoker. I read it twice, smoked my 10 last strong ciggies one after the other then stopped for good, went from 40 a day to zero over night. I am ashamed to admit that I smoked throughout both my pregnancies, prior to becoming free.
Good luck and well done to everyone who is saying no to the evil that is cigarettes.
Incidentally I am currently a registered fundraiser for Cancer Research - I am doing the Great Wall Trek in May this year - as an infrequent and relatively new member here I am not quite sure how or if I should 'advertise' this.

| Tips on stopping Smoking Posted: 1/31/2007 2:59:15 PM | we'll I've been without the ciggies for the whole of Jan.
Using the patches which definately helps.
I also listened to Paul Mckennas hypnosis Mp3's (even through his croaky voice is a bit creepy)
Instead of buying the patches full price you can find them at least half price on ebay.
I have read a lot of Anti NRT sites stating that the nicotine repolacement stuff doe not actually help you give up. As the reports they quote were not full scientific studies.
I definately know it's helping me though. Sure my body is still getting a nice hit of nicotine so my brain receptors are not screaming at me.
BUT
By breaking the physical habit of lighting up away from the delivery of nicotine the next step should be easier.
Last time I gave up with the help of patches for 6 months (stopped patches after 4 weeks)until a drunken night out soon got me back into it.
So the ciggies have been given up , next step the patches :)
Without a doubt though you have got to want to want to give up.
I found it fairly easy to give up last time ,but even easier to start again.

Patches are available from your doctor on prescription or from your chemist over the counter.
If you get free prescriptions you can get them free from chemist also....
If you have to pay for your prescriptions then either from the docs or chemist they will only cost you the same as a normal prescription.
Inhalers are also available ,which a lot of people use.

| Tips on stopping Smoking Posted: 1/31/2007 3:57:27 PM | I did speak to the doctor about getting the patches free.
but apparently I had to join up with a "quitting group" which meant travelling 20 miles round trip to the nearest one before they start giving out the freebies. Long solo car journeys were always one of my weak chain smoking areas :) so i decided against that.
I paid full price for the first set of patches from ASDA. Still cheaper than buying a weeks worth of full price ciggies
I do think the NRT pricing is a total rip off. the markup has to be 1000% easy especially on the patches. Essentially you are getting sticky tape with nicotine adhesive.
But at least they do work (for some people)
One word of warning , they do give you wild trippy dreams when you start wearing them overnight.

| Tips on stopping Smoking Posted: 2/1/2007 4:12:52 AM | Will power. Pure and simple will power and the WANT to quit.
You will never succeed at something you don't want to do.
I was put in hospital (like many others on here) it was only for a couple of nights and was release with a ton of steroids and antibiotics.
As soon as my lungs were able to cope without making me cough too much, I started smoking again. One year later, almost to the day I got the same infection again on my lungs. I was petrified that I'd end up in hospital again, so from the moment I realised what was happening I stopped smoking and got myself to the docs as quickly as possible.
I found myself with the nicest doc ever. I couldnt see my regular doc so as an emergency patient I saw another and found myself with the nicest one of the practice.
He didnt try shock tactics, he didnt show me pictures of lungs and blood vessels clogged with the crap from smoking, he didnt give me statistics of deaths caused by smoking.
He simply said to me, do you realise that you will die younger? You are aware of the risks? To which I answered yes, he then said...Well then...are you ready yet?
I had to think for a moment but the answer in the end had to be yes, I'd not smoked for a couple of days and I had a head start.
So I went home with my ton of antibiotics and steriods and on docs orders, cleared out the cupboards of ashtrays, gave away my tobacco and rolling papers, got rid of all smoking paraphernalia, and made a list of odd jobs around the house that needed doing. Then I sprayed the house with airfreshener and opened all the windows - middle of november you know?! Got rid of the stale smoke smell from the house so I couldnt smell it and then want one. Even washed all my clothes, because they all stank of smoke too.
When I felt the need start to take me, I'd look at the list of odd jobs and work my way through it to keep me busy. After 2 weeks, the house was gleaming, the garden was tidy and the little things in the house that had been bugging me for months were done, and I didnt feel the need anymore.
No patches, no group therapy, just me, my house and a screwdriver.
You can do it if you want to. Thats when your will power is strongest.

| Tips on stopping Smoking Posted: 2/1/2007 3:40:21 PM | Hi Willow
good luck with the willpower. Ive tried patches, gum, hypnotherapy, sellotaping my fingers together even jehovas witnesses but none of it worked. Since Ive had all my fingers surgically removed youll be glad to know Ive finally quit!! Im proud to be a non smoker
|
| Tips on stopping Smoking Posted: 2/5/2007 7:46:08 AM | I have now got the willpower to at least try and cut down, one thing at a time. When i began smoking nearly fifty a day and was out of breath walking to the front gate.
I have just put on my 14mg patch
How long untill it starts working, as i feel like a cigerette now! But as i said before i`m trying to cut down, so maybe have a cig in about 2 hours at least!
I have smoked only 12 today, which is good going as i`m usually onto my second pack.
I don`t want to start eating all round me! As i`m watching my figure.
Have stocked up on fruit and veg, just in case.
I wish the patch would start working!

Good for you for trying and and cutting down!
I have just put on my 14mg patch
For someone who smoked more than 20 a day you need the stronger patch for a few weeks.
You need the 21mg to start off with and ideally you will use these for 6 weeks. Then the 14mg for two weeks and finally the 7 mg for two weeks.
It is not a good idea to wear a patch and smoke!!
Either cut down or use the patch!
I would say talk to your GP or Pharmacist.
Good luck with it!! | |

| Tips on stopping Smoking Posted: 2/5/2007 8:07:19 AM | I am now just over my third week, although I did use the patches for the first 2..
One word of warning , they do give you wild trippy dreams when you start wearing them overnight.
Tell me about it, I was leaving mine on during the night until I realised thats why I wasnt sleeping properly..
|
| Tips on stopping Smoking Posted: 2/6/2007 4:02:37 AM | Good for you willow for staying off them for so long.
Would someone tell me why the patches fall off all the time!!
Mine was stuck to my pillow this morning
I put on a fresh one, which kept falling off, until i stuck it on with masking tape, now its staying on!!
Had a couple of smokes this morning, but nothing like i used to smoke in the mornings.
Already feeling like i can breathe normally again.
Altho` i have to keep telling myself, don`t think about it!!
PS.. i have drank at least 4 litres of water today so far, it helps with the cravings!

| Tips on stopping Smoking Posted: 8/23/2007 10:43:10 AM | All this talk about using the patches is great advice because they do work for some and are a great help to some...
I've found that the best use for the patches is to put one on each eye and completely cover each eye and you cant find your fags, simple really and it does work but be careful not to trip over and bang your head, the patches might fall off and you have to start all over again with a headache..

| Tips on stopping Smoking Posted: 10/29/2007 11:17:17 PM | Some of the posters in this old thread are still posting...have they managed to keep off the cigs tho???
I hate the smell- and for the last few weeks I have really been able to smell it at home and on my clothes and in the car. Then new mans mate told me it was his pet hate (he never gave me a clue!!! )
I gave up yesterday morning...new job, new man- new life???
I am working on the assumption that if I am too lazy to get off arse to go get any, then I should be ok! Keeping busy (and I have to admit to having a drink last night to get me though)....
Over to you- anyone else doing well?

| Tips on stopping Smoking Posted: 10/30/2007 2:56:23 AM | Easiest option....Have a massive heart attack, end up having to endure a triple heart-bypass and sleepless nights due to the way they cut you open on the operating table.
They'll then peel your ribcage wide open and cut into you like a butcher does slicing a pig up.
Miracle of miracles you are cured of smoking, you might still get the cravings but......Well this worked for my dad anyway.

| Tips on stopping Smoking Posted: 10/30/2007 3:11:02 AM | I managed to stop by setting myself a goal. I'd always wanted to ride a motorbike on the road, managed many years as a child riding on the fields. So I put the money I saved by not smoking into bike lessons. I was on between 30 and 40 a day before I stopped, so it was alot of money been saved. Every week I'd have a lesson and really enjoyed it. Every time I wanted a fag I would think of how much I'd miss my bike lesson .
That was January 2006 when I gave up. Yes I've had about 6 fags since but never wanted to start up again. I've said that if I do start smoking again ,I'll sell my motorbike. So its alot to enjoyment to lose.
Since I've given up, the money I've saved has not only funded my lessons and tests, Its also bought all the gear I need for riding, helmet £ 350, leathers £ 450, boots£126 , gloves £55, oh and of coarse it's bought the motorbike as well £2750. Thats a total of £4620 pounds I would of spent on smoking between 30 and 40 fags a day if I hadn't of stopped.
Yes motorbiking is an expensive hobby , but I'm glad I've spent it on motorbiking rather than smoking.
Good luck with stopping !!!!!!!!
