ive tried the patches..gave me terrible nightmares plus pumping in nicotine to replace nicotine is madness if you ask me and i ended up smoking on the patches lol. the new drug of choice the docs that they are dishing out is called varenicline (brand name champix) that i started 7 weeks ago. they work by telling the receptor in your brain that you actually dont want a fag, obviously will power is needed aswell but with the both you really dont feel like having one. when i first began the treatment i did have a couple of sneeky drags but it felt like id had a full ciggie plus they do make you feel a little bit sicky at times (nothing major) but that stops you from wanting to binge on lots of food and sweets so you dont put any wheight on which is good right? lol

since being on the tabs my carbon level has dropped from 10 (which was a light smoker) to 5 the following week to 2 then 1 which means im now smoke free and i still dont feel like one. im so glad ive given up. i saw on tv a few weeks back also that once you give up your lungs start to repair themselves straight away but if you have smoked for many years the repair process could take a few years but i thought id buggered mine for good, which is even better i get new lungs hopefully sooner rather than later.

my skins improved aswell as my hair my eyes are alot brighter, i dont stink like an ashtray anymore and i feel fab and not tired anymore so get yourselves down the docs and go for it ..those tablets really do work.. well they have worked for me

Hi Laura - I'm on DAY 3 of going cold turkey in my battle against nicotine.

I put up a post in another form asking for suggetsions on how to quit smoking, and promised to give each one a try and feed back on the effectiveness of each method. The fact that I write a blog for the site is doing me the world of good - as I don't want to have to write that I can't walk the walk

Give it a go and see what happens I have patcheson standby but haven't used them yet.

Good luck

17 weeks for me, with only one slip up.

To begin with, it was a walk in the park. I was using the patches and chewing ordinary chewing gum. I had no cravings, could be with other smokers with no problem and thought I had cracked it (apart from the fact that I turned into the troll b!tch from hell).
Now I'm finding it harder. I'm pretty much off the patches, I have to make a conscieous effort to put one on and they are are now so low in nicotine as to make little difference. Now I'm finding that when I've had a drink (my trigger) I really want a fag.

Will power is coming into play now. I don't want to be a smoker and I don't want to end up going through it all yet again. So now, all I can do is suck it up and choose to not smoke.

Day 3 for me...no patches or gum- and I have not been eating sweets either!

Occassional glance at new mans picture helps (not doing it for him obviously- but he is pleased)...today is going to be tough- I have to meet my still-smoking side-kick!

No point in having one now though, otherwise it will all be in vain.

The dreaded day 3, If you can get past this day then you can do any other apparently as the cravings are meant to reach their peak on day three then gradually reduce after.
Very well done to all of ya's ... wish I had the friggen will power to stop again
I may go to the chemists later and ask about the the new drugs they have to help quit actually

If the cravings are worst on day 3 I may yet survive!!!

That does not necessarily mean my colleague will!!! She sits opposite me and eats...all day, non-stop...with her mouth open...and she sniffs a lot but never blows her nose.

She is going to be very lucky if I do not go windmilling in there today.

It may be fair to say I am not my usual cheerful sunny self.

Just try and stay out of sight of any smoking paraphernalia if that's possible, demand support for how well your doing, carry around a needle and thread for any heads you rip off, and keep in mind that you have gone +48 hours without one, 12 more hours and you should be able to beat it for good... according to scientific research about it.
... oh and stay away from coffee, thats meant to be bad for some reason while your giving up aswell.

I first stopped smoking by having tablets off the doctor called Zyban, you need to set a date to give up smoking and take the Zyban for about a week before you quit, you carry on taking them while you are not smoking and can for up to approximately 8 weeks I think, they contain no nicotine as they actually work on your brain and cut out your cravings altogether, I can honestly say I never had one craving in all the time I was taking them, I did start smoking again but only because I could, not because I actually needed a cigarette, I obviously didn't really want to give up in the first place so nothing would of worked for me but I'm sure if you are serious about giving up that they could work for many of you.

I have now given up again because I'm on a detox and smoking basically makes me feel sick, I've lasted 15 days so far and although I've had the odd craving, like someone mentioned before, they only last around 3 minutes and are pretty easy to cope with.

Good luck to everyone who is trying to quit or has already given up, us smokers know it isn't easy but it's far from impossible.

I have quit many times;
I stopped for 4 years when I had my kids-then a lot of stress sent me to the shops to buy fags.
Then gave up on New Years Eve this year, auntie died in April and started smoking again,i know its myth that smoking helps with stress, but at the time, you feel it helps.
I then got pleurisy in June and gave up,but as soon as i was better i started smoking again, grr
I am not ready to try again just yet,but i will know when i am.
I use gum and lozenges and they are great,i don't get any bad cravings or the stroppy attitude either, lol, before NRT i was a right mardy mare when attempting quitting smoking and never lasted more than a few hours.
I don't want my kids to smoke so will persevere again and again. It doesnt help that my husband never tries giving up with me,it does make it that bit harder to do.
Apparently there is a new drug out,(Not Zyban) which my neighbour is trying,he gave up after a few days of taking the drug,i dont know what its called but I`m trying to persuade hubby to go get some.

Well day 3....and possibly the most temptation. I was out of the office - and actually in shops! At Thelma's - AND SHE HAD A FAG WHILE I WAS THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have not succumbed. I have holed up at home....two large vodka's before 5pm should ensure that there is no way I will be sensible enough to go out any buy any...not conventional- but I think I have cracked another day.

Tomorrow I have meetings from 8am...so I will get through tomorrow without having a chance to get a cig (new job= don't know anyone to scrounge a cig from!)....and if I can get through tomorrow- then it is the weekend...!

Well nearly two weeks! I am very impressed with me....helps not having anyone at work to scrounge from- but it is MUCH easier than I thought...

If I can get through this weekend- out with smokers- then I am confident I have cracked it...

Just as well really as the constant use of Wrigleys has pulled one filling out already- £50 just for the check up even before the dentist has thought about all the work I need doing! Cant afford to start smoking again.

I quit with Champix.

Obviously you need to want to stop smoking in the first place. Champix can help you.

It does have a few side effects.

I have stopped smoking since begining of May this year.

Been off them for about seven years. Tried patches for a couple of days, just held me at the point at which I'd usually have lit up. (I was one of those relentless smokers, could barely go 1/2 an hour.) Took the patch off and made a roll up as i had decided it wasn't going to happen. my then wife so happened to phone, suggested just hang off as long as possible. Thought ok, this is my last; not going to take it till till it gets to the point where I just can't live without it. Carried the damned thing about for days as it slowly fell to pieces (but god was i careful with it) then lost it. Yep, never actually got to the point where something terrible was going to happen for the need /want of it. By that time the addiction had been starved and didn't have the same power over me.

Had started reading Allan Carr's book years before and stopped, because I could feel it persuading me to give up the weed. Lots of what I had read did start coming back to me, which I'm sure helped.

Take a drink of cold water when cravings come, better than masking horrid taste with sweets/gum. Helps you focus on what a mining habit it is, and avoids just setting up another addiction.

Maybe shouldn't say this but, have had an odd one on nights out since but never felt any impulse to smoke next day.
NB Didn't dare try it till had been off them for 3 or 4 years.

Best of luck to all who try and remember you are in fact just an EX-NONsmoker going back to what comes natural.

I am thinking about quitting too.

My idea is to call my mum to come and take all my house/outside duties for a week and me just being in my room and reading books and working on my writing and not coming out except for a meal.

One of my friends who was a chain smoker has quit recently with Champix but I am not really sure if she really did quit as all she talks about is the cigarettes now.. how odd is that?

And she has got some odd thoughts.. champix is changing her way of thinking.. making her somehow slow as she was quite talkative and witty before.. not sure about champix for myself..

I did quit when I found out I was pregnant, just like that, just stopped, and I did not smoke for 5 years.

But I was off work that time and all I did was going to cafes and restaurants, sometimes for 3 meals a day and the restaurant food made me quite fat.. I put on 3 stones in pregnancy.

There was no a restaurant or a country cuisine I haven't tried that time

I am happy with my weight now.. my friend on champix did put on weight although she has always been a skinny person.. so this makes me scared.. that I will put on weight too..

One of the internet guys I met was a researcher for smoking and he said the 'average' weight add up when ladies quit is 8 kg.. 8 kg on me would be a lot.. and I am afraid of this..

I have a house full of nicorettes chewing gums and inhalers but this does not work, no one in my family smokes, my brother in law did but he quit a year ago.

I notice I have quite negative approach to quitting, which needs mind reprogramming hehe ... but I met a guy recently who quit 7 years ago and he still takes nicorette chewing gums .. so he is basically addicted to nicotine chewing gums now ..

It’s easy as well as a bit tough.
Now the easy part is you have to do away with Cigarettes and nicotine for just 48 hrs. It’s proven that the craving for nicotine is caused by traces of nicotine in your system. To flush all the nicotine from your body you need 48hrs. If you can keep strong 48hrs, half the work is done.
Now the tough part, stay away from cigg smoke. Passive smoking just triggers the system to crave for nicotine. It needs lot of determination to quit it because you have to decide and then stop it completely. You can’t go with cutting down the number hoping this will tend to zero someday.
I have stayed away from cigg away for 1.5 years. And i generally quit when I feel its becoming my need rather than an occasional kick-inducing entity.
So you can do Quit it, it just need help from you ...

I stopped - when the time is right for you and you really want to you just do. Ate lots of fruit when i would normally have had a fag but apart from that did nothing.

I do miss smoking though funnily enough, I didn't smoke much and often could easy fall off the wagon - to be honest I wouldn't care if I did fall off now and again. Wouldn't beat myself up about it. So far i've resisted the urge but maybe will indulge one day. I see myself rather than as a non-smoker as a smoker who chooses not to. Deprivation doesn't work well with me, I think if I felt I could never ever do it again, I'd stress and want to smoke all the more.
