I gave up by keeping the last pack of ciggies with one it it, I rolled the notes I would have spent to ciggies size and put them in the packet. I promised myself that if I wanted one, the last one, I would use a note to light it. It worked or me, I used the money to buy trees and a grape vine for my garden, and to pay for a holiday. It adds up more quickly than you mught think. That was over 20 years ago (smug **** you might say) I am still enjoying the apples from the trees and the birds get to eat the grapes.

Oh I am on 3 packs a day ! And my chests hurt in the night.

I was born prematurely and was always told by my dad who was a doctor I have to live healthily like a baby whole of my life.

Feeling like a junky and pretty helpless about it.. especially when my mum stopped moaning about it and said she bought me 4 x 200 packets

One of my friends was on champix and stopped with it but she is smoking again, says occasionally but I can see clearly she is slipping into it .. and she put on weight after quitting and is now smoking again..

This is what usually happens to me if I try to quit, I put on weight..

I was hoping to go back to 54- 55 kg and then stop so if I put on weight this would be easier to handle but I can not get the weight down from 60kg.These 5 kg seem like a mountain for me even everyone says I am fine with my weight I want to be closer to skinny than to normal when I quit..

Alma if you are waiting until you have lost weight before you quit smoking then you are probably not in the right mindset to quit and are likely to fail and feel miserable about it.

Yes you may well put weight on after quitting smoking,up to 20lbs infact but you will still be fitter and stronger than if you continue to smoke and your body will start to absorb all the essential vitamins and minerals that smoking blocks

Have you considered hypnotherapy? it may be worth a try....

Says me who quietly sneaks out of the back door as a fully fledged smoker

Thanks Kath... but I cannot be hypnotised.. tried several times since I was little and was told I am not acceptable for hypnosis.

I am ( at least was) a pretty strong character in anything really but this smoking thing I feel is smashing my character into small pieces..

And feels like the biggest problem I currently have..

How about Google'ing lung caner? Haveing the most unfortunate time of spending a month in hospital with a guy who had this through smoking for 30 years and had just had his voice box out i have not idea why anyone would smoke or continue to. I feel extremely strongly about this and have even stopped dating people because they would not quite or did not want to quit in the long run, as to do something that you know is damaging your health is disrespectful to a potential partner.

I understand its an addiction, but seems to a routine addiction, as in get up, have a fag, have breakfast, oh i need a fag ect. If you change your routine and have other things to do with your time i think that would help along with patches ect

Or you could just do what my Gran did after 50 years of 20 a day and just say enough is enough and stopped and never had one since

I am not on 20 day but on 60 a day ( that is £18 a day on cigarettes ! ) and same time I moan I cannot afford a babysitter or a cleaner

But the panic of putting on weight is making me terrified of quitting ..

Not sure if I could just approach it in a way 'I'll deal with it!' which is my usual approach when I am scared.. I just do it and deal with the consequences later.. but with quitting the consequences would be putting on weight which scares me more than the lung cancer

Alma imagine £6000 placed on a table in front of your eyes and this amount being placed in front of you every year..

What would you do with money? would it be enough to start changing your life around? is that amount of money enough of an incentive to help you on your way to quitting?.

afaik, you are 55kg, but are afraid of gaining weight to 60 kg ?

yet you would sooner risk lung cancer and all the other problems associated with smoking lots

Maybe use the money you save on a gym membership, or buy a bicycle to get some exercise

no where near 60kg, but would never consider smoking as a way of losing weight

the fact that your chest hurts at night, might mean it is too late for you, get the lungs checked out as soon as possible

It wasn't will power I needed, it was won't power!!

I tried everything, but in the end got Champix from my GP surgery. The nausea the first week or so was pretty bad, but if I had a slice of toast with it, I was not so bad.

4 months on, I've had the odd hiccup (the day of my finals was a killer so I bought 10 and smoked them) but it was the easiest thing I've done. No loss of temper this time. I've put on about half a stone, but I smell better, the house smells better, I feel better and I have more money. I can shift the weight but one thing at a time I say!

Good luck with it though

i went to the Drs yesterday with the other half, and we spoke about Champix...

But because we cant attend the No Smoking Session on a thursday coz of work commitments, the Dr is going to ask the No Smoking clinic if we can have the tablets without going to the sessions... so i have to wait till next thurs now..

Has anyone ever taken Champix without going to the no smoking sessions?

My Niece was taking Champix to help her stop smoking, she lasted a week...

I dont care what you take, stick or suck, without will power it aint gonna work..

Although I have to say that book of Allen Carr's really helped me..

I don't smoke so hard for me to talk i know but i gave up alcohol in my case so know about doing something so hard.
A number of my friends have though & one of the most powerful stories came from a grandmother who broke down in tears when her grandchildren told her that they were so afraid, when she started that awful barking cough yet again, that she was going to die & they loved her.."please nana, please stop" That she could no longer justify the selfish idea that she could do what she liked, it was her life..cos it's not just her life to think of. Many of us have loved ones who would be damaged to watch you dying of cancer knowing there was something you could have done about it.
Still think its up to you? Save a life today..make it yours.

Yes and lasted about a month before taking to the death sticks again. Stupidly I didn't stay on course as your meant to double the dosage after the first or second week (I forget which) and carry on like that for a certain number of weeks but stupidly I thought it was working well enough without and the cravings started to come back.
I guess it might have worked for me. It was looking promising for the first couple of weeks. I just forgot about the will power part and messed up the course...

I went to one of them no smoking sessions years previous to taking Champix.
I have never heard such a droning in my life and all I could think about whilst biting my lip trying not to laugh at the guy doing the droning was ways to escape to go for a fag.
Someone might get something from them though... I got patches and a numb arse.

I found that keeping an old jam jar containing some water with a load of old tabs ends soaking in it helped me. If I got a craving I unscrewed the lid and took a sniff, that soon stiffened my resolve!

Alma - just keep trying. I am on the Champix treatment and about to kick the weed I hope. It's a nasty expensive habit that makes you ill.

You say you are a strong person? You're not THAT strong because you are letting an addiction control your life and rob you.

Besides which - you'll get a bigger choice of men as a non-smoker - and a whiter than white smile :)

I agree that it is like anything else you may try to give up in life that has become a part of your lifestyle, you will only give it up if you really want to and for the right reasons.

I stopped smoking and fell on and off the wagon periodically, it was only when I really decided that enough was enough and in my head thought for the first time "I am NEVER smoking a fag again in my life" that I truly stopped and stopped feeling like a smoker who was on the wagon.

A friend of mine has just stopped and has been very successful very quickly and she also reached a point where she decided that she was never smoking again and is convinced that this is what has made this time different. She used patches to help her and attended a quit club.

Another friend of mine who also stopped recently sat down and wrote a list on one side of a piece of paper of the Pros of smoking and on the other the Cons. There ARE NO PROS. This helped him to stop with the help of nicotine losenges and attending a quit club.

For a hard hitting strategy try to build some resolve, think about what other things you do in your life that you would work to spend money on (in some cases a considerable amount of money), that make you, your house, your car and even sometimes your kids stink, that WILL make you ill at some point, that controls where you go and what you do (some people won't go on holiday or to the local because they can't smoke on the plane or in the pub) and ask yourself if smoking really makes sense and fits with the reasonable responsible, intelligent person you consider yourself to be.It sounds harsh, but sometimes making ourselves feel stupid, brings us to our senses.

The courses of nicotine replacement products and the prescription drugs have to be followed as dictated by the professionals, from start to end of course, the greatest percentage of people who actually quit successfully do so when they do this and not when they give up on a course half way through or don't follow it to the letter. That even goes for people on patches for example who realise they can manage without them after a few weeks and stop using them. Always follow the whole course.

I see some people seeing Champix as the wonder pill we all waited for, but it is not. You can't just pop it in your mouth and you are no longer a smoker, you still need some resolve.

Champix and all of the other aids to stopping smoking will help to wean you off your body's craving for nicotine, but you have to wean yourself off your mind's craving for the habitual and psychological need to smoke. For that you need to develop coping strategies, and they take will power. There are things to help, but with or without these you still need to have the right mind set and this will give you the will to succeed.

Good luck to everyone trying to stop, it isn't easy but it is so liberating when you do and you realise that you have spent years having your life revolve around that smelly nasty drug.

I quit smoking in August 2007, cold turkey. Wasn't my first attempt and I was on a solid pack - pack and a half a day. I tried to quit many times before but with no success. Each time I learned from the mistakes I made until I found a way that was right for me: I stopped smoking on a Friday night (no pub of course), went to sleep shortly afterwards and spent almost the entire weekend trying to sleep as much as I could as the cravings don't hit you when you sleep (you will dream about smoking, that's a certainty, I still do after a year and a half :P) . It has been a rollercoaster ride but I used no chemicals (except from some natural herbal teas to ease my sleep) so I suppose I've subjected my body to the full force of the cravings :P. I had tried before with the gum (no dice), the patches (no dice), and the QuitKey which is a thingie that is supposed to make you cut down gradually (I ended up cheating on the machine so didn't work for me, I should have a brand new one somewhere as well).

I think there is no silver bullet: just try to quit and model the next attempt on the mistakes you made the last time. You'll find your swing eventually :). Ever since I quit smoking my clothes and furniture don't stink anymore and I gained weight up to the point of returning to a healthy BMI (I was underweight, blame stressful jobs...) :)

Good luck to all the quitters out there!

I've been using the patches for 5 months now. I've fallen off the wagon a couple of times but I no longer use that as an excuse to start smoking again.
I don't think I will ever be an ex-smoker. Like a dog who's only two meals away from becoming a wolf. I'll always be two packs away from being a fully fledged smoker.

It works for me.

The best way to stop smoking is to stop buying fags. Simple.
