| Geocaching Posted: 3/16/2009 4:29:50 PM | I would be very interested in this. I bought a GPS unit about a year ago and have yet to use it for anything useful. Geocaching has always seemed interesting to me. Perhaps when summer finally arrives someone can set up a POF geocaching event?
Just a thought here but, Since we are mostly from Edmonton and Calgary, it could perhaps involve all the places in between. That way both cities could participate and meet in Red Deer afterwords?

| Geocaching Posted: 5/22/2009 7:26:48 PM | | I am so addicted to geocaching right now. Victoria BC has about 3000 in and around town. It's pretty much taken over my life. But that's a good thing because I'm always outside, getting excercise and sun and seeing amazing places that I never knew were there. Anyone in Victoria want to join me, send a message, I usually end up going alone so company would be a good thing. Check it out at geocaching.com, I'm goat13. | |

| Geocaching Posted: 5/24/2009 11:25:30 AM | | How do you organize your own event if you aren't part of an existing group? Edmontonfella had a great idea but unsure of the logistics. Would it be easier to join an existing group? | |

| Geocaching Posted: 5/24/2009 12:21:41 PM | I have never tried geocaching; I have a GPS that I use when hiking, so this could be a blast, a day out searching for the elusive treasure!! And a really good way to get some exercise. I would be interested in doing this, let me know if someone sets something up. | |

How do you organize your own event if you aren't part of an existing group?
It's pretty simple really. 1) Get a Tupperware type container, include some kind of trinket, hide the container out of 'normal' view (under a log, in the end of a pipe, under a rock etc.). 2) Take photo's of the trinket, the exact location where you put the container and record the GPS coordinates. 3) Upload the photo's to Photo bucket or some other online image storage service. 4) Post the GPS coordinates and a link to the 'Photobucket' images.
The hunt is now on ...
When the 'winner' finds the container and trinket leave a note for who ever is too late, report the find to the Geocashing thread and exchange (or add to) the trinket in the Tupperware container. Repeat the four steps above.
If the container can not be found contact the last person to hide it and and if they can't find it it has probably been picked up. Keep the trinkets cheap for this reason.
Wash, rinse, repeat...

| Geocaching Posted: 5/29/2009 1:46:57 PM | OK as no one else is stepping up to the plate I'll give it a whirl. I have decided to donate Ye Olde Coveted Crown as the first trinket for a POF geocache in Calgary.
CovetedCrown has established a gmail account as well as a photo bucket account. I'll let you bright folks figure out how to find the addresses. I'll give it a few days to see how much interest there is before hiding Ye Olde Coveted Crown and will mail out pictures of Ye Olde Coveted Crown, the container its in, the exact spot it is hidden in (20 Sq Ft or so with hints), and the GPS coordinates to anyone who finds the coveted crowns gmail account.
When it is found, please send a message to the gmail account so everyone can quit looking until it is hidden again and new coordinates can be posted. Leaving a note behind for anyone who is looking for it is also proper etiquette. I will accept the new information including photo's of the new location and mail out to anyone on the Coveted Crown email contact list.
I know this should be done on a website but I don't have the savvy or desire to learn how to set up a website at this point in time.
That's the best I have to offer, RR

| Geocaching Posted: 6/5/2009 7:07:04 PM | | This does sounds like fun. Anyone have suggestions for what to look for in a GSP unit (for pedestrians/ cyclists I mean)? | |
|
| Geocaching Posted: 7/28/2009 10:34:17 PM | | Maybe there should be a POF caching event. I am in Medicine hat right now for business and they are having a Geochaching event at one of the parks here. Maybe it would be fun to get together for a day of caching then a campout or something. | |

| Geocaching Posted: 8/4/2009 11:21:19 PM | Geocaching's great, but its a little easy finding a stationary target... a nice beginner sport.... If you take a look at my profile, the last picture, now thats taking geocaching to the extreme lol. Its a pic from 117,600 feet above Alberta. People ask me "Why?" I just like to say its a extreme game of hide and seek for big boys lol. Send a camera, GPS, and transmitter etc... up on a balloon, let it travel to 120'ish thousand feet where the balloon bursts, then try to find it where it lands. Our last "package" travelled ~100km after about 3 hours from the time we lauched it. Can't wait! Only two more weeks and we're sending up 4 different packages over a couple of days, 2 of which we're using for world record altitude attempts, 2 are carrying high-def video cameras and other toys. | |
