Do you find that there are more scams on paid dating sites then here ?
Yes I do. | |

| Scams. Nigerians, Russians ETC. Posted: 2/3/2007 12:06:09 PM | I am quite embarrased to say that I was scammed and it was on a paid dating site. I know that i am wiser now and know what to look for. At the time I didn't know how the scamming was done but I now know that there are different ways. I became very informed. I can look at a picture and read a profile can follow the pattern. Once you talk to a scammer it is very evident with their vocabulary and spelling. They are very patient and spend all the time needed to entice a person. All along I felt that something may not be right, but of course, curiousity and the unknown made me go forward. I had to test it out. I have learned and hope that others be aware.

| Scams. Nigerians, Russians ETC. Posted: 2/3/2007 12:06:27 PM | | Plentyoffish is virtually scam free. I block of 600 of these loosers a day and maybe 1 or 2 of them get by per week. When they do make it on they are found pretty quickly and nuked. Paid dating sites on the other hand don't even make a effort to block them. The more people who message others on a paid dating site the more money they make. A scammer who mass spams can ad thousands of dollars to a paid dating sites revenues. | |

| Scams. Nigerians, Russians ETC. Posted: 2/3/2007 12:12:28 PM | | I have got some of them from Yahoo and another free one called Active Atractions. They always have nothing filled out in their profiles. Of course I just ignore them. I tell them I only want someone who is local anyway. But I have recieved the them on e-mail addresses that areen't even connected with dating sites. I just get them like Spam. The last one was one of those Russian one. I exchanged a few letters. She gives me a whole longe story. I send back maybe two sentences. When she tells me where to send the money I tell her I'm not goind to fall for her very obvious scam and I don't here from her anymore. I haven't recieved either the Nigerian or the Russian scam lateley. I have recieved a few foriegn lottery scams recently. I ask them how I can win a lottery that I never bought a ticket for. | |

| Scams. Nigerians, Russians ETC. Posted: 2/3/2007 12:16:44 PM | | I used to get a Russian once or twice a week. I actually got to the point where I started playing with them, just to see how long it would take for them to hit me up for money. This was on match.com. | |

| Scams. Nigerians, Russians ETC. Posted: 2/3/2007 12:24:33 PM | I have been approached by these scammers and the best thing to do when you come across anyone asking for money or offering to put money in your account is to play along and send them this message" I was born at night, but not last night" I have never come across that problem on Plentyoffish this site seems to screen them out successfully which is great. I seen a TV special on this Nigerian, Russian bride scam and they actually have a huge setup just to see how many people they can scam every day. They start with stories of how there father was killed and is some Cocoa merchant blah, blah, blah, and they want you to give them your account number so they can send you millions of this so called cash they have...Come on people if anyone asks you for money on these sites be very leary and suspicious unless you know them personally. | |

| Scams. Nigerians, Russians ETC. Posted: 2/3/2007 12:25:59 PM | I finally found a site, through Yahoo groups, that pointed out scammers. It was then I realized I had been approached by several. One had a picture that was beyond commical that I could not reply to him. The other had such bad english that I knew what was up. I was on a paid site for about a year and only had those 2 incidents and was warned of a third. Some woman on Match, and her friend, actually went through the trouble of emailing tons of women to warn them of a guy posing in NC. Amazing. They had a lot of time on their hands. I did date a fellow I met on Match who had a incredible amount of women from Asian areas contacting him endlessly. I warned him what it was all about. So men are a definite target with this. I have not run across any here as yet, but I've only been here a month. | |

| Scams. Nigerians, Russians ETC. Posted: 2/3/2007 12:30:07 PM | | I've been on a few sites and haven't run into these types of scams here but if you ever have doubts about a Russian woman you can check with the site I used last summer to avoid parting with big bucks to these scammers. Its called allrussian.com and it cost me $125.00 for the background check from a Russian lawyer and was worth every penny to avoid being taken. The site describes all you need to know including how they operate, how long they try scamming you, and usually many pictures on a dedicated 'scam' profile page. We all know the Nigerian scam has been around forever and nobody falls for that anymore. By the way- some now are from Africa also. | |

| Scams. Nigerians, Russians ETC. Posted: 2/3/2007 12:31:58 PM | | I am pleasantly surprised myself that I havent been approached by the Nigerian/Russian scams on this site. Keep up the good work. Its very refreshing!:-) | |

| Scams. Nigerians, Russians ETC. Posted: 2/3/2007 12:37:03 PM | I have personally not been scammed, however both my brother and male roommate have been...female Russian. Think they met on My-space and she was very young and pretty. My brother and I live almost 100 miles apart and it appears to be the same woman! She led them both on saying she was moving to this general area and never asked for money or assistance until about 2 weeks into the contact, she asked my brother for $900 and my roommate for around $2500 neither one sent it to her. When my brother visits next he's going to bring the pic she e-mailed so we can compare with my roommates. My roommate said she originally appeared to be from TX. he contacted some company in Russia to see if she was really coming to the US and they confirmed she was.....you can see where this might run very deep indeed. Beware | |

| Scams. Nigerians, Russians ETC. Posted: 2/3/2007 12:39:09 PM | The free site I was on right before coming to this one had so many "white" Nigerians... I was asked to marry 3X in 3 weeks... by 3 different guys...in West Africa claiming to be Americans. I was appalled when I realized the truth...thus, the truth part of my profile!!! I just deleted my membership from there yesterday. They sure have flowery discussions of love and promises of passion. They seem to worship a woman from day one, just for chatting with them...and how unique and special I am. I mean, it is flattering, but where are the hip-waders!?!?!?
And that is just the beginning! Lies and deception... claiming to be religious-based. Quoting scripture. Gosh, I am a Bible-believer and that is bad medicine!!!
Anyway... it certainly has been an enlightening experience for me. Helped me to "see" through some of people's B.S.
Oh, I think it can happen anywhere on any dating/personals site. If they come to realize that they can get to "locals" here, just as easily, I think it would happen here too. "Pay" hasn't got anything to do with it.
I believe it is a scam to gain access/entry into the U.S.A. through marriage or invitation.
Interesting topic!

| Scams. Nigerians, Russians ETC. Posted: 2/3/2007 12:40:37 PM | well, I used to be a member at singlesnet, and there were SEVERAL women with 'local' profiles who, when messaged, replied they were in 'africa' "buying gold" or on a "student expedition" or even the old chestnut, "visiting a sick relative" and they would dialogue for a day or so, then all made their big pitch: they needed AIRFARE to get back to America, and if SOMEONE would pay the fare, the woman would fly into the airport nearest the man who forks over the big money, LOL.
One week, I ran across like 3 different women pulling this scam, and I busted them all, saying how so many women from north western Ohio were over in africa, lol.
It is not difficult nor hard to spot a scam................one SHOULD ALWAYS BE PRUDENT AND CAUTIOUS ONLINE AND ESPECIALLY WITH ROMANCE/DATING SITES!

| Scams. Nigerians, Russians ETC. Posted: 2/3/2007 12:41:58 PM | | Haha, this site is the first and only one I've come across where most of the women are real and the fake ones are blatantly obvious. I haven't yet received anything of that ilk here. Those scams are so obvious to spot by now though, and webmasters are pretty attenuated to complaints about them that it's really not an issue. People who are still naive enough to fall for them probably deserve to "be soon parted with their money" to paraphrase the proverb. The best educator is experience. I read a reccent forum post somewhere about a guy with a waring about Craig's List women where he stated that: "And then I found the same picture of that girl on another site!" So, bear in mind the golden rule of internet dating: "if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is." | |

| Scams. Nigerians, Russians ETC. Posted: 2/3/2007 12:43:39 PM | I think there are definitely MORE on the paid dating sites than here. I have been contacted by MANY Nigerian scammers. They're easy to spot because they have a really lousy command of the English language, the photographs usually look like they're from a studio (which they usually are), and they usually write LONG letters and mention marriage at the first contact and slip in their yahoo address. I can't remember EVER being contacted by a scammer on this site. Anytime I get suspicious on the other sites I look to see if the guy is listed on www dot romancescam dot com. It takes a while to go through the pictures (one scammer may steal pics from as many as 10 different people), but then when I find them I can report them.
TAKE THAT YOU SCAMMING DOG!!!!

| Scams. Nigerians, Russians ETC. Posted: 2/3/2007 12:49:59 PM | I have been personally attacked on Yahoo, Myspace, Match and fusion101 which is another free site. YEAH for me. I sure know what to look for though. Thanks for asking!! | |

| Scams. Nigerians, Russians ETC. Posted: 2/3/2007 12:50:55 PM | Have never had a problem with scams on Plenty of Fish. But when I did use a paid site there was always a problem. The Nigerians only gold is to get into Canada or the States and they always seem to think that people who live in our contries all seem to own gold mines. They will never take NO for an answer and the only way to get away from it is to cease corrosponding. For what it is worth also it is not a good idea to give out your home emails because then the problems really start. Have a wonderful weekend all.......

| Scams. Nigerians, Russians ETC. Posted: 2/3/2007 12:53:22 PM | And MORE on scammers:
1) They cannot clearly validate where they grew up, went to high school, etc. But they will try to lie about it for sure. And they will DEMAND an apology from you for confronting them on it! Bold-faced lies...then turn around and say, "that is in the past, let's move forward with this relationship!"
2) Note the immediate flowers being sent... love connection, "true bond," you are my everything! ...all on the first discussion.
3) They claim to have good jobs and good money. They just want a little help from a nice person like YOU.
4) Story: sad story about parents and difficult childhood; I was raised by my uncle in London...
Yes...they are persistent. They prey on our sense of compassion and desire to be valued.

| Scams. Nigerians, Russians ETC. Posted: 2/3/2007 12:57:09 PM | Have you ever heard of the scammer getting scammed? Several months ago a guy from Nigera order several bikes, watch, nice pots and pans, clothes and had them shipped to my home. He wanted me to shipped them to him in Nigera. He kept calling and emailing me and I kept giving him the run around. Saying it's in mail. I did that because, before then he ordered a vcr/dvd player and he contacted Fedx to come an pick it up at my house, so they could deliver it to him in Nigera. They did and they sent me a bill for $300. I called fedx and told them I didn't call their service. They cancelled the bill. I sent the guy a message and told him what happen. He gave me all kinds of excuses.
He also wanted me to send seven bikes, pots and pan, clothes, watch, shoes to him by fedx. I kept all the items and I am enjoying them. I sold the bikes. Put the clothes in an assignment shop for sale. That's what he got for trying to make a fool out of me. I was being nice to let him send them to my address and he would pay for them to be delivered.
Now, I am getting email from other men from somewhere in Africa. They are saying they work there and are there and need money. They have money coming to them but they need someone to cash the checks for them. The checks are no good. I play along with games. I say I will do this and that if they would do something for me, like buy this and that, lol. I am getting good at it too. I let them think I will help, not anymore. I know someone who fell for one of their scams. The bank will get their from somewhere. Someone will pay. So, try something different. Scam the scammer, lol. It so many of them out there.

| Scams. Nigerians, Russians ETC. Posted: 2/3/2007 1:05:25 PM | There are more Russian and African dating scams now than ever before. I believe that they are just being exposed more now and that they have been there for a long time now. I recently had a russian email me in attempts to extort money from me as she promised to come to Canada in hopes of marriage. Unfortunatley, she did not read my profile properly and I called a friend in immigration and had her flagged! Sorry folks she did not come here, but if she did I would have been waiting with a special pair of silver braclets for her!
Otherwise read the profiles carefully and do your homework on them; if it seems too good then it is. These girls are only out for money for whatever reasons. If your crazy enough to send money all of the angencies are aware of who most of these girls are.
Good luck and happy fishing!!

| Scams. Nigerians, Russians ETC. Posted: 2/3/2007 1:07:42 PM | I have been on both paid and non-paying sites. The scammers are everywhere. There was an episode on Dr Phil about it, they use fake pics (both men and women) of models, and of course we all get 'sucked in' when we see a pic like that. But after a few chats on messenger, and them saying how much they love me/us and then start asking for money its obvious its a scam. I thought they only triggered single moms, some think they are desperate for attention, but it looks like they go after anyone they think they'll be able to scam. Just be careful out there who you trust. | |
