Posted: 2/3/2007 1:54:55 PM | I was recently contacted by a gentleman who lists himself as living here in michigan and we started talking.after a while of talking he swore that he had deep feelings for me and wanted to take care of me the way that i deserve to be taken care of etc...
well then he offers to pay my bills online and insists to do this for me.
then later on it comes out that he is a business owner in nigeria and he is having power failure and that he needs to pay for a transformer but business is slow and he can`t afford to pay it.asks if i can send some money via western union so that he can get the transformer on and have power.sais nigeria will not accept his us credit cards to pay for the cost.and in return he will pay my bills online.does this not sound like a form of money laundering?
DAMN good thing i`m only blonde by choice!
if that isn`t a scam i dunno` what is!

Exactly. I see the same on Yahoo and Myspace, usually they do
not have any friends listed, etc.

This is used by many scammers. Sometimes it can even take weeks
after the check clears until the bank comes back and tell you it was
a fraudulent check, even if they accepted it. Then you have to pay
the money (that you sent on to the scammer) back...
As many other said, they are often americans stuck in Nigeria or some
other african country, needing help to get home. I was at one time
talking to two "models" being stuck in Nigeria at the same time...
One claimed to be from Dallas, but did not know the parts of the city.
She named a street, and some buildings around (easy to look up), but
there are no apartments in that area. :-)
Then there was a girl (again a "model") who was in England. She claimed
to be at her managers cottege outside Luton. I did send her a link to a
picture on my web server, then simply checked her IP address in the log.
When I asked her how come she was outside Luton, but the IP address
belongs to a canadian company that specialize in satellite internet for
western Africa, "she" got mad.

Some other good hints: they are "americans" but use british english, often
older language. They always wait for papers from a "barrister", not an
"attorney", etc.
I have not seen many scammers here, more on Yahoo and of course on Myspace. | |

Posted: 2/3/2007 2:06:17 PM | Yes - was contacted by over 9 business men all overseas in Africa. I have to say one admitted to what he was doing. One by the name of Bob - claimed he was from Michigan wrote the most beautiful romantic notes I have ever come across. It took him over one month to finally try to tell me that he needed to go back to the Netherlands (home country) cuz his mom had a stroke and needed some funds because he used most of his funds for his "business trade".
Didn't buy his story but did like his writing - some of the them are truly skilled in writing.
It's sad that so many people fall prey to men/women who know how to write and appeal to lonely hearts. Many people are desperate for love and the need to feel loved.
If you want to help someone - help someone in your area - reach out the guy/girl across the street or nearby. There are many people who would like to hear kind words and want to be loved. Start with the people here.

Then suddenly all these stores were mailing packages to my house.. on the paper work.. it was billed to other people...but had my name and address on it...
He told me to package it all up in a big box and he would pay shipping to him...
I knew this was very FISHY... so I went to the FBI.... and they told me it was a scam, and other peoples credit cards were being charged without them knowing it for the clothing and shoes... So I wrote a letter to all the companies put the letter in the packages that came to me...and returned them...

Posted: 2/3/2007 2:18:38 PM | I'm constantly bombarded by these scammers, fortunately for me I'm very wise to them. I can't recall ever being contacted by any of them on here, so kudos to the Admin! Now Yahoo on the other hand... I wonder if there's any way I can sue them! Yes, they suck my money in, and I get multitudes of mail or IMs from these bottom-feeders in return.

(it or who ever ) sent me the wrong picture of someone else.And they kept on talking about sending money to them.

Nothing against Russians, Nigerians, or the Ghanaese, but it is fact. I am sure their are just as many wonderful people in those countries as there are here or anywhere else, but those people look for potential mates in Ghana or Nigeria or Russia, not here.
If you get scammed by these people it is your own fault!
But if you really want to have fun with them, try "scam baiting". Google "Scam baiting" to see how it is done. | |

Posted: 2/3/2007 2:43:12 PM | Oh yes ... without a doubt there are more scams on paid dating sites then here. And I might add, it's not necessarily the Nigerians and Russians ... a lot of Asians and Southeast Asians are involved.
I have a friend (male older gentleman) who has now been propositioned by 8 different women ... "working girls" here on POF and he has only been on here since around October 2006. All pretty much quite a bit younger than he is ... all have the same sort of "come on" as well (I've seen the emails).
They flatter him with several emails and he writes back telling them that he's really not interested ... they write back encouraging him to visit them for a weekend and they will show him a "good time". Others have proposed that he pay for them to visit for a weekend and they will show him a "good time". Either way ... he is promised a "good time".
One lady went so far as to say that she expects "gifts" as well.
I can't see that he can report them ... as then they would just maintain that it's all in his interpretation ... right"
I have been contacted by young black men (in their 20's & 30's) who tell me how attracted they are to me ... but their English is awful and one already knows by that ... that there is something foul going on. I can't say for sure they are Nigerians because that is not what is on their account ... it's usually England or some Scandanavian country. | |

What frightened me is they used my last name - not my first. I'm still wondering about how they got that information. I'm sure if they were privy to my first name they would've used it.
POF is my favorite of all the sites - I love the forums but wish we could pick and choose which ones show up on our profile page. I also love the new "who viewed me" feature.
