Pierre Elliott Trudeau (a former Prime Minister of Canada & a batchelor till age of 40 to 50, a very much sought out batchelor) said that the Government has no place in the bedrooms of the electorate.

I'm Canadian and so this is not our issue YET! Lots and lots and lots of commercial, media coverage etc.... about this virus so I suspect it is the forerunner of its release in Canada. i.e. part of a product's marketing plan. I do not believe that it should be mandatory. I've had tooo many patients who had vacines as children and they are still children 30 yrs later and like who would have know.? that they would be allergic or react so badly. Remember Thalidimide (granted not directly a political issue BUT) was given carte blanche!

I've been an RRT and a Pharmaceutical Sales Rep in my field and I know what goes on that the public doesn't. It's all about $$$$$$$ and squeezing by for approval and years later when the side affects are know, a removal from the system but damages done. Research and Development companies in Canada get lots of government subsidies.

In the OP issue, I don't think anyone's hands are clean. I think that any medication (they say that if Aspirin were discovered now and sold, it would require a prescription) needs testing for a minium of 10 years and the numbers should be proportionate to the population.

I wonder sometimes why the standards are not North American (Canada & US at least)! But I guess different standards but a double blind cross over study is a double blind cross over study with strong standards for researches. It would certainly increase the data bases. New medications releases' worry me because of the 'secret' or unstated power of the lobbyist who get paid megabuckss to manipulate politicians. They have no interest nor connection to the medical issues involve. They are product and $$$$$$$ driven.

In Canada we are small (like 1/10th your pop) and rather conservative (not political party) and I know that the Federal Government Agency (Health Protecting Branch) regulating approval body has so very much inner problems and fighting. I wonder if drug applications should be audited by TOTALLY non involved people prior to submission. May slow the process down but hey, remember when they found the drugs that were affective on AIDS, and they wouldn't release them because they had not been trialed. Now that was a direct dead or alive issue. Finally they loosened the strings. I mean the people were dying! I think your FDA learned a pretty important lesson about being a wee bit flexible in 'certain' issues.

I have close friends who are now in their 60's. Both were in northern sanitoriums (late teens) dying from TB. They were totally on death's door, like a day or two away from death. They were given a drug that had not been tested, they felt they had nothing to lose and one slim chance it would help. They agreed to be 'guinea pigs' in a 'secret trial'. Well I did say that I know them at their age in the 60's.

Hard decision for those not medical and/or affected by the disease BUT no lobbyists POLEASE throwing bucks (mega bucks) around!

Hey, all:

Well, zip-a-dee-doo-dah! There are some victories for comsumers and common people. Merck announced in the past couple of days that they are dropping the state to state lobbying effort in the U.S. to try and get Gardisil mandated for young girls. A lot of bad publicity has occurred in Texas and the effort has been poorly received in several states and outright rejected in some others.

In Texas, legislation was filed to override Governor GoodHair (Gawd, I miss Molly Ivins) Perry's executive order requiring the Merck product. And public hearings in the state brought up lots of objections, based on religion, gender discrimination, personal freedom, medical issues, government corruption/government by edict/government by corporate oligarchy, etc. Maybe the state Repuglicans took a big hit, too. Well, one can hope.

However, the corporate oligarchy marches on. It seems likely Merck will almost certainly continue some effort to market the vaccine to governmental health agencies, thereby continuing to bypass the public. When so much potential profit is to be made, it would seem like a 'sure thing' to a gambler.

David

Governor Goodhair is seeming trying to do everything possible to insure that he is considered an even worse Governor than Dubya was. We may have to ressurect Bob Bullock to save the State. Lately our beloved Gov has had a few of his fast track initives derailed. I agree we need Molly Ivans back as well as Ann Richards.

"This is not about the medical/health value of the vaccination, although that is worth a thread itself, this is about the politics of elected officials doing deals with businesses at the expense of public debate, and with no apparent concern for the public will. It is about the corporate oligarchy that in fact is in charge of government. It is about elected officials and corporations circumventing the legislative process for greed."

Medical/health are but one issue addressed in this document provided by The Council on Foreign Relations. What you've touched on in this thread, SoTexman, is, IMO, but one piece of the BIG picture. Merck, for instance, is a member of the CFR. Can the 'dots' be connected here? (excerpts from the link provided)

........"Finally, regulatory differences can have a negative impact on the very environmental and health outcomes the regulations themselves are supposed to encourage. Unnecessary delays in the approval for sale and distribution of innovative products can prevent timely access to new pharmaceuticals or medical technology that might save lives, or to new fertilizers or chemicals that could help industrial plants and farmers do a better job of protecting the environment.
A collaborative approach to regulatory reform could help all three countries expand economic opportunity within North America while strengthening the protection of the environment, health and safety, and other shared objectives of regulatory policy. While each country must retain its right to impose and maintain unique regulations consonant with its national priorities and income level, the three countries should make a concerted effort to encourage regulatory convergence."

.......“Tested once” for biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. The cost and quality of health care is a critical issue in all three countries. Biotechnology and pharmaceuticals play a vital role in providing new treatments that improve health outcomes and often reduce costs as well, but they face huge costs in developing and then winning regulatory approval for new products. Preliminary research suggests that regulatory cooperation in the areas of human and veterinary drugs, medical devices, pest control, and chemicals would raise the value of sales in these sectors by more than 10 percent, profits by 8 percent, and the rate of return on new products by an average of 4.8 percent. Two possible approaches to reducing the regulatory burden while maintaining rigorous standards to protect health and safety would be to adopt a “tested once” principle by which a product tested in one country would meet the standards set by another, or to establish a North America testing center with personnel from each country."

I would suggest for anyone who is unaware of what the BIG picture holds for the future of the United States, Canada, and Mexico, steps that have already been taken (Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (passports), Eminent Domain, etc.) steps in the works (Mexican trucking, TransTexas Corridor, etc.), to read the following in it's entirety. I also have a list of corporate, government, and private members of the CFR. I am rather new here and am unaware if an entire thread has yet to be devoted to discussion of this document.

And that my dear, is the real issue about so many things. Politics has gone into areas that they have no right to and they dirty it by their involvement.

I am Canadian and our WONDERFUL health system is being systematically undone by politicians, change the politicians, change what they do BUT none the less it has spiralled down very fast. Money BIG money is ending up in pockets because politicians are meeting inapproriate needs of the power houses AND lots of $$$$ that they remove from our long term excelent health care is being pocketed in lined pockets.

I think this is my problem. I am at an age in life, 2/3 way thru at least, that you begin to see the repeating circles of times gone by and times to come. Its like someone comes up with a great idea (rediscovering the wheel) and implements it because it is so much better than that which we have. BUT if you've been around long enough, you know that what is happening was in place long before and removed. The problem is that they won't admit that it is an old recycled product! AND they'll never admit that it is something old. They market it as exciting, new, bring our standards up. Just about as fashion trends I say.

Like right now there are a whole generation or maybe 2 generations that did not experience VietNahm and yet the Middle Eastern war in Iraq and Afghanistan is same old same old. The bottom of the pile are the people fighting it and at the top are the money mongerers in a no win situation. You just can not deal with an eastern or mid eastern factor with western mentality. I had hoped that the western world had learned from Nam but apparently not. The generals and leaders of all our forces (if they need to be there) should be led by people with like minds. We all know that our (Western ) morals, standards, ethics, etc....are completely diffirent so it has to be ego that makes our powers to be think that they can manipulate and out manuever a different society.

Bottom line $$$$$$$$$ for those who already have it and lets wipe out the middle class like they did in Europe after previous wars.
