| | Interracial Relationships..Page 7 of 8 (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) | I can't get a date to save my life, so why would I worry about a woman's color? I live in a mixed neighborhood but the Black women here don't give me the time of day. I have been going to a little place mostly to hear music, and this real nice and real pretty black lady took a liking to me right away. She's tall and slender, I could watch her dance all night in those short tight dresses and heels. The other night when we all left, she gave me a short hug and a magnum hug , and I gotta say, I didn't want to let go!! She always asks me if I have a girlfriend, and why not, and so on. Who knows? I could get lucky. | |

| Interracial Relationships.. Posted: 1/2/2012 10:31:22 AM | It's up to the individual. Society still organizes us into races (which should be supported, because race is a critical part of individual identity), which means we shouldn't expect everyone to be colorblind when it comes to dating. There are some who are, and that's fantastic; they've broken through their own mental racial barriers. There are some who aren't, but that does not make them racist.
Many people have preferences, and many of them go beyond outer beauty. With different races also come different values, beliefs, etc. (while not applicable to every individual of every race, much of it is nonetheless a strong part of individual identity). Understanding these is the key to understanding why some choose not to date certain races.
|
| Interracial Relationships.. Posted: 1/2/2012 12:19:03 PM | | ^^^ Perhaps you're confusing "culture" (shared values & traditions, etc.), with "race" (i.e., the color of your skin and basically what you look like), and which don't necessarily go together. Otherwise, I'm sure there are a lot of folks of the "Klan-ish" persuasion who would strongly agree with you. | |
|
| Interracial Relationships.. Posted: 1/6/2012 3:15:49 AM | Unfortunately, I think the term "race" is one of those cloudy terms without a clear definition. At what point does a very dark skinned Caucasian woman change over to being considered a very light skinned Mexican woman?
Its confusing but I think in its common definition, "race" does take into account more than just the color of our skin and also looks at our social or cultural characteristics too. I'm sure its a term that scientists would cringe at using because it lacks any clear meaning. I think here in this forum, it's just using the term to ask if you'd date someone that had the common physical traits belonging to most people that would call themselves 'Black', 'Asian', 'Caucasian', etc. I think of Russians as a race but they probably just fall into the whole Caucasian category. And Asians...well I think that category includes anyone that looks Chinese but Russians are from Asia....too confusing!
We could change it to: "Would you date someone with blue eyes?"

| Interracial Relationships.. Posted: 1/6/2012 6:28:54 AM | I hear 'ya re: "common use", etc., but I think the distinction between Race and Culture is actually a pretty important one, and it's what accounts for a lot of the "confusion" whenever the subject of "race" comes up (and why we usually just end up arguing over all the knee-jerk charges of "racism", etc.)! Race is what you're born with and have no control over, while folks don't necessarily remain in the Culture that they were born into. Although if it's really just a "physical type" we're talking about (build, skin & eye color, etc.), than let's be clear about that too!
But IMHO, a lot of times when folks complain about "race", what they may really be talking about (or not) are some of the assumptions about the "Culture" that goes with it ("Black's do this, Whites do that", etc.). When of course there are always plenty of "exceptions". So if I thought all Whites had the same "culture", heck, I'd probably hide my own race! But then we start talking about the notion of "class" distinctions (which we like to pretend don't exist in this country), and that one gets REAL messy! For example just bring up the subject of "white trash" or "rednecks" in mixed company and see what happens (and is that really about "race", or "class", or is it "culture"?)! ;-p

| Interracial Relationships.. Posted: 1/6/2012 8:48:37 AM | Mateo - You raise a good point, it IS more about a person's "role in society" than their skin color. Would I rather be with a trashy White woman or a classy Black woman? The answer is obvious, to me anyway. I kind of wish for the day when all humans have merged racially, so that distinction is gone and we can move on to other things. My 19 yo daughter lives with her Black " husband" at my Mom's house, a conservative Kosher-keeping Jewish woman!!! WTF ?? Things change. They sure changed at MY house, anyway. Doc, YOU raise another biggie, which is How the H CAN you tell a light Hispanic from a White? Originally very white-skinned Europeans came to the New World and mingled . I see women on POF who are Latina list themselves as Caucasian, but if the distinction is that close, who cares? I mean, are we gonna go around with a DNA test , like on the Oprah show, so we can verify how many percent of each race we truly are? I have Hungarian ancestry, which is sort of darker skin-toned, and lots of strangers think I'm Hispanic !! (maybe because I always have a burrito in my hand) But really folks, we have to get past this race thing. The beauty of America is that a whole bunch of outcasts and dreamers came here from all over, and managed to make a fantastic country here, a country that remains a magnet for people everywhere. As I drive around Los Angeles and I pass through the varied ethnic neighborhoods I hope that they too will merge into the group, after all, why did they come here? How can I buy their delicious foods if I don't know what the storefront says? | |

| Interracial Relationships.. Posted: 1/6/2012 11:12:55 AM | Doc - Ask any Vet, they will tell you that mutts are healthiest AND the happiest !! They don't like the word mutt, though. They prefer the term "Heinz 57" instead. As in 57 different breeds,,, Purebreds - Irritable, strange ongoing health issues, limited social manners with others. | |
|
| Interracial Relationships.. Posted: 1/6/2012 1:04:22 PM | I hear what you're saying Richard, its just that I think the world would be a pretty boring place if we were all mutts. There is something interesting about seeing a beautiful Hawaiian woman with her dark coloring and long thick black hair, soft brown eyes, and something equally interesting in seeing a tall, broad-shouldered Swed with his bright blue eyes, fair skin, and blond hair. You really want us all to be mooshed (I think that should be a real word) together into one indiscernible, all-encompassing mega race ? We'd lose the beauty that's part of each unique race. I know very little about genetics but I think we'd eventually lose the traits that are a result of recessive genes? Blonde, green-eyed, fair-skinned, girls would be rare.
Maybe we just need to develop social tolerance?

| Interracial Relationships.. Posted: 1/7/2012 8:12:48 AM | | Well that's the dilemma isn't it, that as soon as you start to "differentiate", somebody's bound to say that one or the other is "mo bettah"?! And actually I'm even OK with judging like that as long as we're talking about folks "preferences" in music, food, dress, values, customs, etc. (aka, "culture"). But judging folks based on their "race"... not so much. | |
|
| Interracial Relationships.. Posted: 1/7/2012 4:46:54 PM | | There is one race, human, and variations in eye color, hair color, and skin color do not change that. | |

Perhaps the Republican went along with it to foster the spirit of diversity and inclusion? Don't you agree on the wisdom demonstrated here? This IS the 21st century, after all. You are SO not with it!!!

| Interracial Relationships.. Posted: 1/9/2012 9:03:54 AM | As Clinton (and others) have demonstrated, there's no question re: plenty of "liberal hanky panky". But then they've never been the moral scolds that conservatives have, who pretend to be the defenders of "family values", even as so many of them have displayed such an obvious "preference" for the kinky stuff... like "intra-gender", "under-age", and "inter-species" relations! In fact they seem to prefer those to the "inter-racial" stuff! ;-p

| Interracial Relationships.. Posted: 1/9/2012 9:46:38 PM | I have met some really sweet Black women, I find a lot to like with Black culture, like rock n'roll music for example. Somewhat offtopic, here are a few recent examples: I met a man today, he fixed my gas furnace. I have been having ongoing problems with my house heater, I replaced the valves and tubes, but it was still unreliable. It would run for a few days, then die. I would relight it, and it would run again, then die out. I called my handyman, but he drew a blank, I called a repair guy, he came and adjusted it, it did the same thing. I called him again, he didn't want to come back. I called three more shops but it was holiday time, and nobody wanted to get involved. Luckily it has been warm here, so the thing wouldn't be on much anyway. Last night I got a text message from my handyman, he said he had a guy who was good with those things, maybe he come come today. The handyman did show up, with this Black guy named Fred. Fred is maybe 65, a medium-sized man in good shape, it seems Fred was a troubleshooter for the gas company for 30 years, he claimed to know about gas furnaces. The three of us went down into the basement, it's an old house, kinda big, and I showed him the furnace. He saw the new pieces I had installed, then we lit the pilot light. Fred said the pilot light was too large, and poorly aimed, and that this would cause problems. He shut it off, took out those pieces and bent the metal to make the flame strike the center, not the edge like it was. While he did this he told me that he no longer worked for the gas company, he is retired. I asked him could he do work for me sometime if I need it done? He said, no, he is busy with other stuff. Like what, I asked? Fred told me that he started his own agency to secure housing for terminally ill people, mostly Aids patients. They usually don't live six months, he said, but those are real bad for them, much worse out on the streets, it's kind of a hospice thing. He told me of some slumlords who get paid and don't fix jack in their buildings, and that this is an ongoing problem in certain areas.he said there's a lot of fighting going on behind the scenes. Fred tuned my furnace like it was a Stradivarius, ran it a few times, said it was sweet now, and that he had to go. He had things to do. The job was no charge, Fred said. I asked the handyman to tell Fred that I would consider it an honor to help him sometime if he could use me for anything. I hope I get a call from him sometime. I met another man last Friday, I was sitting in my little dance joint with the 2 Black ladies who befriended me, a man came in and joined us, I think his name was Cyrus, kind of a slender man , maybe 6" shorter than me, big silver bushy hair, he used to sing in a group, they said. Cyrus liked to go to Karoake bars and sing, but this place has a live band, no Karoake. The ladies liked Cyrus because he was a good dancer, and a nice man, they said. Anyway we introduced ourselves, they danced a few while I watched. I'm always Jealous of how Black people dance, they move so well, and Cyrus was very smooth. They came back to the table, and Cyrus said that he liked to come to this place because they had Johnnie Walker Blue Label scotch. I'm not a scotch drinker, so that means nothing to me.However that was years ago, they don't have it any more, it's hard to find. he said that every year at his birthday he would come and have one, it was too special to have all the time. I said that if I had any sense I would hook up with Jenny, the taller of the two ladies we were with. She is very sweet, pretty, and damn sexy too. Cyrus said he felt the same , except that he was married. He said his wife is bedridden with some longterm illness, she can't dance like they used to, so he comes alone. I could see the twisting in his face, I imagine his wife saying, "No, you go on and enjoy yourself, I'm sick but you're not, so go." Anyway, we all danced and had fun, and I thought about the scotch that he liked. I called a few hotels and bars in the area, and couldn't find that drink, so I'll buy a bottle and have the ladies find him and give it to him. He'll enjoy that, I know. Then the four of us will find a Karaoke bar, and we'll sing us a few. | |
