I devour books,,,no other life, so give me Art, Music and books...:)

| What book are you reading right now? Posted: 7/24/2005 5:14:22 PM | I can hear my conscience saying focus, focus!!!, but alas it is so much more fun to feast at a banquet! I am reading Dan Brown's Angel's and Demons. This past weekend broke to read the new Harry Potter and the HalfBlood Prince. Have also been dipping into Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago(heavy emotionally, which is why I'm taking it in small doses - but still fascinating), and too... Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead( a reread from thirty five years ago) and for passions sake, The Diatoms by F.E. Round, Crawford, and Mann. For my art soul I drew from my shelves the work of Jack Bush....sigh. I wanna be him when I grow up! Who's counting calories...lol. | |

For my fun reading (in some attempt to balance out my research reading) I've just finished "When Broken Glass Floats" by C. Him which is about the life of a family in Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge. For a bit lighter reads I'm part way through "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" which is oddly reminiscent of some of my dreams -- and "1421: the Year China Discovered the World" (a rather interesting take on China nautical history before it entered one of it's isolationist phases).
Oh, I picked up "American Gods" by Neil Gahman at the bus station to pass time; bit of ancient deities meet the modern era.
(Sadly, I'm stuck in "The Truth about the Truth" for about the last 3 months, can't seem to make any headway... )

There is enough biological data to satisfy the amateur scientist and a saturation of genera illustations to satisfy the curious artist. Caution... it broke the bank! To accompany the study, I picked up Smol and Stoermer's book also called the Diatoms: Applications for the Environmental and Earth Sciences. And for desert I found on Ebay a copy of 'A handy book to the Collection and Preparation of Freshwater and Marine Algae, Diatoms, Desmids, Fungi, Lichens and Mosses. 1867.
And what do you do for heavy reading.*grin...

Me… now I’ve always preferred ‘excrement, where it should and shouldn’t go and how to keep it where you want it.’ Somehow, I think my chances of being in the ministry’s communications branch border on nil.
Hmm… I think I’ll put Diatoms on my list though, thanks.

I'm take frequent breaks from that one to re-read "As You Like It" which is more amusing than I remember. It must be my advancing age!

He still has issues, and I will not drug my child, but would like to have more knowledge on how to help him cope. Thanks. Bon.

| What book are you reading right now? Posted: 7/31/2005 5:15:39 PM | | I am reading GK Chesterton's book on Chaucer entitled 'Chaucer' and have just finished reading quite possibly the greatest book of all time ever, Mikhail Bulgakov's 'The Master and Margerita" as dazzling a 'hymn to the imagination' as anybody has ever dared commit to paper. Banned in Soviet times until 1973 for being errr... too good - states a pretty good case for repression being healthy for art (but sickening for genuine artists) - in liberal democracies we manage to produce Dan Brown and Harry Potter - literatures equivalent of rock and roll wet dream doyens such as bananarama and Bryan Adams. yuk. can't quite see the point of this thread now having contributed to it. is anybody supposed to respond? next stop - bill Hicks' LOve al the People' dear america, you may well have your funny endearing little ways, but i would like to personally thank you for giving Bill Hicks to the world. cheers! | |

Today I pulled from my shelf a book that continues to take my breath away. The Hand of the Poet: Poems and Papers in Manuscript by Rodney Phillips.
I delved into the poems and lives of Robert Lowell and Elizabeth Bishop...ecstacy!!!
