There is a dance the first Friday of the month at Church St United Methodist Church at the corner of Cumberland and Henley. The dance lesson begins at 7:30 and the dance at 8 until 11. The cost is $5 with lots of snacks and sodas. I will be teaching in December and the dress for that one occasion is dressy but jeans are accepted. On the second Saturday there is a dance at Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the dance is 7-10:30, cost is $5 and there are snacks. It is in west Knoxville out from Fox Den. I think out Smith Road. Do a mapquest. The 3rd and 4th Saturdays, there is a dance at the Flynn/Square Dance center on Tulip St (off the Western Ave bridge) with a lesson at 7PM and dance 8-11. Cost is $10 with lots of snacks and sodas. On the 5th Friday the dance is at Concord United Methodist Church in Concord, same thing as at Church St. At all the places it is no smoking or drinking. The music is a combo of country waltz, two step, cowboy chacha, schotisch, east and west coast swing, slow dances, line dances, the DJs will pretty much play whatever. There is even some freestyle dance. Lots of fun, we all enjoy ourselves. The dress code is jeans to dressy. We usually have 50-100 depending on what else is going on in the city. Come and join us.

Thank you all so much for the info. I will check out those websites you mention. I am getting very excited about the whole adventure. As far as jobs.. well I think that might be my biggest challenge aside from trying to sell my house here. I work in the pharmacy field but I'm open to learning anything that will pay the bill. LOL. I just want to earn enough in one job so I dont have to work 2. I have been working so much in the last year I think I may have forgotten what a day off feels like. So again thank you so much for the info. I will keep all of you posted on my progress. Hope to meet all of you some day.

Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice?

Hi, I havent visited this site for awhile.......And yes I have been thru Maryville several times and I have always loved it. I seem to be having problems with the job thing, and the apartment thing. I am trying to transfer thru my current employer but things haven't really gone my way, YET! And I say yet because I am still trying. I have thought about just quitting my job and moving there, but even though I am telling the landlords/apartment managers I can pay ahead for a place if they are concerned about my unemployment they are still leary of renting to me. Employers also are leary of hiring me as I am in a different state. I can't wait to move there, and finally buy a little fixer upper for myself and enjoy my time until retirement and thru it. I have really been trying for the last 8yrs to relocate trying cheaper areas in the TN, KY regions.
If you don't mind I will check out the websites that were listed myself, didn't know they existed. Thanks so much!
Shelly, I am with ya girl all the way and feel free to message me anytime, I am in the same boat as you only I don't have any children. I think you will fall in love with the area as I have, it is always in the back of my mind.......Someday, someday I will live in Maryville..........God Bless All Of You.......Karen

Karen I will keep you in my thoughts. I hope you get to where you want to be. At this point in my life I think I will give up most anything just to get out of here and start over. So best of luck to you and keep your fingers crossed for me.

I do job placement at no cost to the applicant and can provide you with further information regarding the Maryville area. http://www.tennesseeanytime.org/ is the state web site which is good for job search and other information regarding the state, such as driver's license, etc. As far as housing in Maryville/Alcoa area, there is a landlord's association that is really taking off to help them to know who is good to rent to and who is not. Perhaps a possibility would be to present a potential landlord with a copy of your credit report which shows you pay your bills on time or a letter from your current landlord/mortgage holder. I know when I divorced and had to try to find a place to rent and get the utilities in my name, I had to pay whopping deposits even though I had good credit and paid my bills on time. Because all the bills had been in his name, I had no utility credit even though I had earned the money and written the checks that paid the bills.

Thank you so much for the information, WOW very informative suggestions here. I have offered the lease monies up front, my landlord credentials, and practically my bank account references (not doing that, YET)LOL. I could very well afford a mortgage but I just don't know the area well enough yet to buy......maybe I am just a little nervous about buying in the wrong area, or not looking at the house close enough before I sign my life over....lol.

It would be so much fun to start over, I know I am not getting any younger and I would like to retire there someday. I too am divorced but still have great references. I guess maybe because these people haven't met me in person, and just thru an email they would get a little nervous......Then again, I would think having a lease paid thru, versus a month to month with others that have employment is just as iffy..I do understand their concern though.

Thank you for the info on that website for employment I will definitely be looking at it.

Well I hate to be the one to break this to you... but this isnt paradise anymore. As for being entitled well my parents brought me here 30 years ago and at the time I really didnt have much of a choice. Yes we are being priced out of the market but I think that is happening most everywhere. Sorry to hear someone be so negative about something that I'm really looking forward to. Hope your mood improves. Happy Fishing

For job information, go to www.discoveret.org/jobserv/. It always has 150 or more job listings. The Knoxville Area Chamber Partnership is another good source of information. Knoxville is an exciting place thanks to downtown revelopment and jobs which have been added in recent years. Give us a try!

I am surprised to keep reading on various forums that TN is considered cold. At least 2/3 of the country would probably beg to differ. You can just ask a Michigan transplant (there are many here) when you get here. I guess cold is relative, however. To a Florida transplant there will probably be a period of adjustment. I will not argue that there can be some very cold periods at times in the winter, but this is also intermingled with pleasant 60 degree sunny days and cool, rainy periods. Most importantly, it does not last very long (compared to many areas of the country). Daffodils will usually start popping up sometime after Valentines Day!

jsmit, thanks for the weather info... i do have a question. Am I likely to see some snow at least once a year?... I have been looking forward to it for a while. It has been way to many years since I have been able to play in the snow. One of the reasons I picked that area is because I know I wont get snowbound but it wont be all one season like it is here in Fl. Thanks again the the info.

We usually see some type of snowfall most years, but it is usually only 2-3 inches at most. Basically enough to make everything white and pretty; roads mainly remain clear and the snow will only hang around a day or two before it melts. BUT....about once every 3 or 4 years or so (on average, in recent years) we will get a "good" snow of 4-6 inches and roads freeze over. Panic will ensue (women fighting over loaves of bread at the grocery store, school closings, etc) while the one salt truck that the city of Knoxville owns gets around to all of the main roads. Rarely is it actually that bad; the people are usually more dangerous than the snow;) Ice is also possible, but we have not had an ice storm in quite a few years.

PS If you are moving to the mountains, the former description does not apply. A chilly rain in Knoxville can easily turn into a significant snowfall above 3000 ft. I love topping a ridge near my house on a clear sunny day (often after a cold rain) in my car and seeing the mountains covered with snow in the distance!

Thanks jsmit. That sounds perfect. I am hoping to be in or very near the mountains. I need some wide open spaces. I just dont want to be able to hear my neighbors fighting or the baby crying next door. I want to walk out the front door and see mother nature and not the old dude in his boxers getting the morning paper.,,, know what I mean, lol.
Cant wait to get there. Happy Fishing everyone.

I too am moving there, somewhere between knox and nash, this way jobs and music are about equal distances, my mother and step father moved to Rockwood several years ago, and have nothing but good to say about it.

Hello everyone, OK I have the dates for my first scouting trip. I will be up there Feb. 15 to the 20th. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Right now I'm trying to set up interviews and an appointment with a real estate agent. Now a shameless plug. If anyone has contacts in the pharmacy field, I am an expierenced inventory control and purchasing manager.
I will let you all know how things go. Till then...... Happy Fishing

I have lived in Knoxville for two years this April. So far it has been ok but it is not for me in the long run. I do not care for the racist attitudes of the South. I have made some great friends out here but in the long run I don't thing the area has what I need. It has been a great overall experience for me so far though. But being from California It just doesn't cut it for me, especially since I miss the ocean I'm so used to. COst of living is great out here though!

Thanks for your input raven. I'm not big on racists myself, lol. But I have learned to live and let live. People with that kind of attitude end up not having as many friends as they could, if only they would stop seeing in color. I have no problem with color as long as they speak english, which is the major problem for me in South Florida. That and the cost of living here is unbearable. Well thanks again and best of luck to you. Happy Fishing

Shelly, hate to tell you but we have a large Hispanic community here because of the agricultural business. Lots of seedling companies are based here.

It's not so much the hispanic community its the attitude down here that they dont have to learn english and we, being english only speakers, are the ones who need to accomadate them, being the spanish only speakers. It has gotten to the point that the signs at gas stations and grocery stores are in spanish first then translated to english. I just feel that english should be the first language of our country. I lived for a short time in Puerto Rico as a child and we were expected to speak spanish and I was fine with that. Anyway there a soooo many reasons I need to leave here and that is just one on the list.

Don't disagree with you, I think English should be the officially recognized language here. The Hispanic community is trying very much to fit in and learn English. We have a number of other languages here also, a lot rely on adult children to translate. Feb will be here before you know it.
