| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 1/31/2008 8:29:04 AM | Well Shelly I can tell you this much....
I moved here a couple of years ago. There is alot of oppertunity, it a growing and developing area. It is filled with politcal and police abuse (the good ol boy club is live and well here in good old TN). It is getting better the 21 century is smacking them in the face. On a littler note most of the people here are quite charming. As for the weather stick around it will change! It the perdict snow there is none, if they say 60% chance it will rain it will rain somewhere but not all over Knoxville. Never seen anything like it. If you are taking up hiking you are coming to the right place! The mountians are unbelievable breath taking. It is one of the reasons I chose to settle here. The cost of living is moderate to low and that depends how close to the mountains and or Knoxville you are. The tourist areas are higher. Like I said plenty to do. If your a church person(I am not) I'm sure you can find one there seem to be every 1500 feet after all they don't call it the bible belt for nothing.
There is a good mix of locals and people who have moved here from all parts of the counrty. Makes for some interesting times. Knoxville News Sentinel has a city guide that should help you in most of your searches. Hope I was of some help and good luck.

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 1/31/2008 11:37:24 AM | | Thanks for your input. I am used to a very diverse population so I have learned to live and let live. As for the weather, well I live in south Florida and we dont get the cold but the changing every 5 minutes is something that has always been fun to deal with. I am hoping to live closer to the mountains than to the city. Just keep your fingers crossed for me. It wont be long now. | |

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 3/1/2008 3:36:48 PM | Who me?? Or Shelly, or SillyGal?
Seems like you've got a lot of folks eye-balling your area OTD, with plans to move there at some point. Well that's whatcha get when you live in such a great spot. One with all the advantages of a G-burg, and the Smokies, yet hardly any of the same tourists and crowds. (Shhhh.. We don't want that to get out!).
I gotta get back over that way in the Spring and make some serious decisions. And also stay longer this time..
As for SillyGal if she's still around, (YO SILLYGAL!!), renting is usually the best bet for a year or so till you get your feet wet and learn all the pros and cons of an area. And the kind of neighborhood you might want to be in and such. Right? At least that's how I usually look at it. Right now of course there is this Real Estate crunch going on too. That might take a year or more to figure out where it's going with TN.
Hardly ever would I just move in somewhere and buy without having a feel for it myself, which I always get from renting first. What landlords there have been giving you a hard go of it? And is that in person, as in you being there on a visit, or by telly? Seems odd to me that they'd be especially difficult to please. But even in a worst case, showing them a copy of a bank statement is usually very sufficient. If you give them one though for their file, (probably not advisable if you can avoid it), you should black out the critical information like SSN and ACCT # or anything like that, for your own security.
Of course you know all this stuff I betcha.. -Suth'nBoy

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 3/2/2008 11:29:17 PM | Where are you importing them from?
And how does that speak for existing Tennessee fellers?
Heck, if I move to Maryville, not only do I want the sights, the mountains and the laid-back, semi-country kind of lifestyle, I want to know in advance there are lots of eligible single ladies over there.. I mean, they HAVE to be SOMEWHERE!! They certainly don't seem to be in great abundance in Music City, from what I've run across in recent times!!
Over here, it's usually about 20 red-blooded young fellers to every eligible gal.. Online that is anyway. I've been thinking of importing some womenfolk from down in Georgia.
(No offense to Music City of course..)

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 3/29/2008 10:27:01 AM | From a native Knoxvillian. Born and raised here for the last 52 years.
I don't care where you go you will find good and bad. You are looking for what suits you and what you and yours and what you can tolerate and be happy with.
Some will say Knoxville is dead and a "scruffy little river city". This is just because they need to look further and faster. If they are not happy they need to just move on and don't bring us down with your negativity.
If you are looking for hiking the Smokies will give you endless trails to explore. There are trails for horsback riding, and biking. The Dragon for motorcyles is an adventure in itself. We have Dollywood/Splash Country for the amusment park people. We have Shakespear on the Mall for the cultured and curious (and it's free). The Old City downtown is just a fun place, and Sundown in the City starts in April with free weekly concerts (thru June I think?).
If your looking for spiritual? One poster said "the Bible Belt" . There are churches galore and locally Mulls Singing Convention sponsors awesome Southern Gospel Concerts on a regular basis. . Lots of churches sponsor some great singles groups too (I have heard).
This, along with a multitude of restaurants, theatres and local "Bike Nights" all over town (Wild Wings, Quaker Steak & Lube, Ray's on Kinston Pike, The Shed @ Smokey Mtn. Harley Davidson just for a few).
Bottom line is that if you have been here and you like it well enough to consider it, talk to a hometown person. We have seen it grow and change. If you want to contact me I will be happy to help you out. I agree with renting for a year to get a feel for the area.
It sounds like you have lots of offers so you should get a good mix and good information. I wish you the best of luck and I may travel, but Knoxville will always be "Home" to me.

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 3/29/2008 5:13:12 PM | Thank so much gyspy. You sound like someone who loves their hometown. I'm really just looking for slower, easier, and more laid back atmosphere and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the Knoxville area is it. I'm getting closer to my personal cutoff time to leave this place and at times it seems so close and at other times it just seem soooo far off. Keep me in your thoughts and I promise to let all of you know how it's going and maybe we can all have a get together when I get there. Happy Fishing to all | |

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 4/1/2008 12:46:34 AM | I still have my sites on Maryville, or else somewhere close to Chattanooga.
Both just gorgeous places. But I have become not too big on living in a city. I couldn't really recommend Nashville(Music City) to anyone though, unless they were associated in some way to the Music Bidniz. It has overgrown itself in the last couple of decades and is no longer the quaint smaller city it once was, and the one I felt had become my adopted home. So much has changed here which is pretty much now out of control. Lots and lots of crime, and the way overcrowded freeways are of a Kamakaze flavor. That part reminds me a lot of driving in Boston!
But there still are some great places in Tennessee to call home! I think the further east and south one gets, the better. Memphis of course has even more problems of a similar nature than does Nashville. But if you get into, or around, the Smokies, it's hard to beat.

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 4/1/2008 3:31:17 AM | | I live in Alcoa and the Springbrook area is just off Alcoa Hwy. We are talking 5 minutes from the airport, but no noise as it is not a flyover area. Fifteen minutes from downtown or west Knoxville. Walking distance to the Greenbelt and parks, also to the pool, churches. About 20 minutes to I40 or 75. Small town living but easy to reach the 'big' city. | |

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 4/3/2008 10:46:11 PM | Sounds almost perfect OutoftheDesert.
Best of both worlds. Of course Maryville being right next to you, those are some of the same advantages it offers too. I find that area very pleasant, yet self-contained, and undoubtedly a nice place to hang your hat for the long-term.
Not to mention the easy access to G-burg and the Smokie Mountains.

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 4/6/2008 2:41:43 PM | | I love my hometown. I was born and raised here in Cleveland. We have about everything you could look for but the jobs are better in Chattanooga. I work in Chattanooga and have for the last 6 1/2 years. It's a 30 minute drive by interstate and next year we'll be moving the company about 10 more miles so my drive will be about 40-45 minutes. | |
|
| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 4/6/2008 2:49:25 PM | | You sound like me. I worked in Knoxville for 28 years, my job transferred me to Alcoa--2 miles from work. Monday, transferred back to Knoxville--30 minutes drive but not complaining because I still have a job. | |

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 4/6/2008 3:42:50 PM | It's so nice to see everyone happy and proud of their towns with so many nice things to say. I can hardly wait to get there. The time is getting closer but at times it just seems a life time away. I will be there for a short trip in May if nothing goes wrong this time. I hope to be there for good by the end of summer. So everyone please... just keep me in your thoughts and say a little prayer, (if thats your thing), that all goes well. Maybe we can plan a get together near the end of the year. And if you havent read all the post, I'll just throw another shameless plug for myself.. I work in pharmacy doing inventory control and purchasing. My skills can be applied to other industries. So if you know of something please let me know. Thanks all and hope to be there soon. | |

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 6/24/2008 3:35:28 PM | Well here I am. Still in Florida. I came up that way a few weeks back and tried looking for a job. Things did not work out so well, and I have to tell you all something. The first day I was back I received an e-mail from someone here that said ... and I quote.."Just stay where you are, we have enough of your kind here". I have to say I loved your state and the Knoxville area was just beautiful. Unfortunatly I have run into some problems and it looks like I will end up either in Arizona or Georgia. Now I dont mind Northern GA but it's not really what I wanted. Anyway I guess I just wanted to let you all know how much I appreciate all your input and advice. I also wanted to update everyone on what was happening in case anyone cared. Take care and I'll be checking back soon. Happy Fishing everyone | |

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 6/24/2008 6:49:08 PM | Sorry to read that somebody sent you that email about staying were you are, we have enough of your kind here. Am 4th generation from here and know MY kind was not the first here! To me, we all came from somewhere. You will run into negative people anywhere! Don't let this stop you from moving to our state of Tn. Hope things work out for you young Lady. Good-Luck wherever you go.
Take Care, C.W. | |

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 6/25/2008 5:44:54 AM | I have to agree with C.W. here. It is a true shame that you received such ugliness from someone who is from such a beautiful state. I do hope that you don't let that one fool make your decision and do hope that you can get moved to the location that you seek most. No matter where you end up, I wish you the best of luck!! But keeping my fingers crossed that you do get to move here to Tennessee since you seemed to have your heart set on it. We would be glad to have you!
