What is TIME ??

the answer to your question lies in the mayan calendar. there is a duality within the nature of time. much like yin and yang, there is physical time (linear), and there is natural time (cyclical). linear is external, and cyclical is internal. when we only follow linear time we end up thinking primarily with the left hemisphere of the brain, and we percieve reality differently. when we learn to follow natural time it opens our hearts, and our minds, and allows us to access the more evolved parts of the brain. our calendar is based on linear time, and it acts as a subconscious programing device that tells us that life is an endless cycle, and we are not moving forward. however the mayan calendar maps out the evolution of consciousness, and shows that we are nearing the end of all the cycles around the year 2012 when we will make a quantum leap into a new paradime. for more info search the web for ian lundgold, and daniel pinchbeck.

Ian Xel Lundgold spent thousands of dollars to study the training courses of Scientology.
I might err on the side of caution regarding his ""scientific findings""
Daniel Pinchbeck isn't exactly well received by many in the sciences either.

The deal with 2012 & the winter solstice is that the calendar simply starts over for a new 26,000 year cycle.

2012 is not the "end times", the world will not end, it's a bunch of religious mumbo jumbo.

I've owned lots of calendars with various holidays marked on them.
When they end I turn them over or go get another one, and time marches on.
Every calendar ends, but that does not mean that Time Itself ends.
It's just a date.

Time is a dimension like length, hight and width. It is our 4th dimension. The dilation of time we experience as gravity or accelation. And it is related to the speed of light. Our experience of time is measured by motions of objects. Sun, Moon, earth, etc.

Time is an ordering of irreversible events.

Well -- it might look that way from certain perspectives -- such as ours, but the probability of events is the real test. In fact on the extremely small subatomic quantum state scale, events do not play as totally irreversible over time. The probability of reverse and forward time are remarkably close.

Based on the Roch experimental test of the famous double slit experiment it would seem to me that time is also both particle and wave based -- like pretty much all the other stuff of the universe. How exactly that my be understood by us simple-minded humans is quite another quantum leap of thinking that nobody's quite made --- yet..

I admit to only having read the original post and so apologize if I repeat what anyone else has already said :-)

As part and parcel of the system that we fondly call the universe, we are subject to its laws and so perceive that system through its laws, one of which is Time. Asking a human to define Time is perhaps like asking him to define God, or like asking a fish "the nature of the water in which it swims."

Time is how we explain change and motion. It serves to separate our understanding of existence into many related pieces -- pieces that might appear whole if they existed independent of Time. So, we could say that Time is the continual reconfiguration of reality or perhaps the breath of the universe (though this of course begs the question: what is reality).

Whatever it is, whatever it does, it is my personal belief that what is most important to realize about Time is that it is an illusion. This understanding makes possible a comfort with the universe, a confidence in life, and a natural morality.

Thank you, Mr H20, for the stimulating question!

...i think what is side-tracking many pple about time is the 'illusion' of it being an illusion.

time is of the same root as either space or mass....in order for mass to exist there must be space for it to occupy and thus time bridges space by its very flow!....in our realm, you cannot have one without the other two!..........if time is an actual illusion, then so are mass and space.

Einstein asserted that light waves, unlike other waves, could exist where no matter was present.

Yes -- maybe matter doesn't matter. Einstein certainly had some thoughtful ideas around that -- but in the end it shifts to which card you want to deal -- the speed of light card or the speed of time card - and ultimately what are these limits / boundaries.....

Maybe Neil Young got it exactly right when he sang in '73

Time Fades Away
'Cause you know how time fades away.
Time fades away

"Most cultures have a grammar with past and future tenses"

What happened to the present continuous indicative?

For your suprize, English has no future tense. Action words that are set in the future are expressed with a modal word "will/shall" ("I will not regret this") or else with the present tense ("After visiting France, we go to Belgium") and with the idiomatic "going to" ("who is going to save the world from being drowned in dogshit?")

Hungarian has no future tense, Russian has no future tense, and German has no future tense. I know no other languages.

Wow! this has all been really interesting. all I want to know is why I can never be ON TIME upon arriving somewhere. I am chronically late. After reading these posts, instead of viewing myself as irresponsible, I choose to take the view that the light waves around me are moving more slowly than they do for others. Thank you for giving me a new lease on life!

You have to learn to read more carefully and more precisely, _______. The guy did not say than nothing is irreversible; he said that the sequence of happenings is irreversible. Any finite amount of change is reversable, under special circumstances, but the more things happen, on a larger scale and with deeper complexity, reversing them may take more and more effort, to the point where it is impossible for a person or for an artificial unit with finite resources to reverse them.

Two hydrogen molecules will form with one oxygen molecule two water molecules; and this process constantly reverses itself. But try to reverse the process of any of your embarrassing moments in your life. There were much too many molecules present and they went through happenings in a very specific order -- in your brain, in the muscles in your body that produced the sound of speech that made it embarrassing for you, in the sound waves in the air that carried your voice, in the perception of those who heard you, and in the molecules that comprised with synchronized motion the recipients' understanding of your statement.

Try to reverse that.

After my swashbuckling through posts on this forum, I'm really happy to have found someone, polyenka in particular, with whom I can agree 100 percent. I'm not alone in the Universe! But I'm alone in my university to think that.

Palyachnichka, if I were only 25 years younger, 60 lbs lighter, 10 inches taller, millions of dollars richer and about 6 autoimmune diseases lighter, then I'd definitely ask you out and spare no effort or money to go through with it.

"i believe that it has been established that time flows in quantum packets."

That has not been established.

Just today I was in a pub with a group of my friends and we discussed time passingly. A guy who's retired and studies philosophy and natural philosophy (scientific theories) now at the local university for fun, said that the shortest unit of time is how long it takes light to travel over a distance that's the thickness of a proton. I asked him if this is established or this is just an arbitrary man-made unit; he said the latter, upon my further probing he admitted that there is nothing indicating that this is the smallest unit of time, he just said they figure this is the shortest distance in space that is filled with continuous matter, and it's purely a definition used for calculations.

It had been him who introduced me (us, in the pub) to the dilemma of science, which asks whether time is a quantity, or is it a complex thing comprising other things, or is it neither but just a mere illusion which is a concept which man uses in his expressions when describing existence and the universe. He had said that none of the three theories have any merit, none has any more support than the other two, and in fact none has any supporting evidence whatsoever scientifically or philosophically.

Yes the classic demo used for "time reversal" is the state probability of a sugar cube dissolving in a cup of coffee vs. "undissolving". I was speaking more precisely about negative time.

Now, negative time is a concept or event or vehicle for events to happen, that in turn I don't know anything about.

Hole Theory attempts to deal with it in some degree.

For example in negative time positive energies must all be bigger than mc² and negative energies must all be less than -mc² to exist in positive time...

You guys are dancing around the concept of Entropy.
http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/therm/entropcon.html#c1

Energy may be used provided entropy increases while total energy remains constant.

Light does not need a time dimension because light moves only with an absolute velocity.

Light is that constant labeled "c" in the E=mc²

Time is easily wasted in explaining conundrums related to the conundrum of "What is time?" But again.. how you choose to spend your time is more relevant than anybody's definition of Time according to HIM and HER.Nobody is right and geez everybody is right. And who is indeed right? Well it is indeed fun and belies the very seriousness of LIFE. I have experienced LIFE as quickly slipping away despite all of my best intentions to thwart TIME'S relentless march. If light moves only with an absolute velocity, I am therefore carried away into the maze and am not concerned with the temporal. I am beyond Time and on my way to light fantastic. Just wondering if LIFE has anything to do with this thread?

Life has nothing to do with this thread

Oh come on now Mr. Soggy pants! It is obvious that "Life" has everything to do with time. Everybody has an internal clock that runs according to their own life, and time is certainly interpreted by everyone individually according to how they view their life.
You may not agree that time is a construct of the mind of man, but you might be able to see that time is certainly seen and experienced on an individual basis. For example children and the elderly view time much differently than people, like ourselves for instance, who are on schedules (of our own choosing), which are emeshed in the constructs of time.
Does time exist in the present? In the moment? In the Now? If we live our lives, our present, based on the past and only can view our future based on the past, then indeed time is relevant in that context, but if we experience our life as a series of moments, of experiences then time does not exist. Time only exist in the past and future. Now is timeless.

"Life has nothing to do with this thread"

I beg to differ...

....as time.. is the mathematical equation from each individuals birth.. to death. The life we live in between.. is time.

Time didn't exist for ME before my birth.. nor will it continue for ME.. after I'm dead.

Time is basically a mathematical uncertainty.. as it can shift.. bend.. alter.. and it is not set in stone. It's merely a "countdown". Hope.. for life's continuance to each individual.. makes people count-up.. and not down. Matter.. as in what we are all made of.. has it's own "time". Eventually.. that "time" gives out.. as we approach own demise.. and the "count-down" begins. JMO
