They have an article in Maclean about the "Sleeper Bowl". They break the sports down to "Action per Minute", pretty interesting read. I think you can probably read it on the internet as well.

Just look up Sleeper Bowl in google.

Hi Andysweden.
You are making a solid case that soccer is a better cardiovascular workout than hockey. That wasn't the question.
We are talking toll on the body here. Not just on the heart and lungs, but the bones, muscles, the entire anatomy.
The abuse that a soccer player puts his body though cannot compare to that of a hockey player. I've played both sports and as a defenceman in hockey, if I didn't come back to the dressing room after the game without a new bruise on my body from either hits or blocking shots then it wasn't a good game for me (Hey, I wasn't a goal scorere...I had to keep track of my performance somehow ha ha). The only injury I ever received in soccer was actually not an injury at all, but what the docs diagnosed as some kind of "juvenile arthritis" in my knees, from the running, when I was a teen. I had to give up the sport. (Ironically, I started running 5 years ago as a regular exercise routine and my knees are fine)

Your estimates on distances covered in a soccer match are, incidentally, fairly accurate. I thought they were a bit high so I did some research and there was an actual study done to this effect, a season-long study in 1971 using Everton as the team. The result was an average of 8,800 metres....and that was almost 40 years ago so it's not a stretch to say they cover 10k these days. However, the study also said that about 2/3 of that distance was covered at low-intensity jogging or walking.
In hockey, if you try to go half speed it will be the last shift you play that game.

So, although the soccer player generally does stay on the pitch the entire 90 minutes, he spends the majority of that time "coasting".
Also, keep in mind that a soccer player plays one game per week. A hockey player averages three.

again the same old song!

an Ice Hockey player whose body is protected with helmets and a lot of padding does not really suffer, simple!

a footballer whose body has no protection save for a pair of shinpads really suffers a lot, simple!

by the way, 1 game per week playing for 90 minutes is worse than 3 games per week in Ice Hockey or in american football where a player is on the pitch for 3 or 5 minutes.

and let us not forget that sometimes footballers play more than 1 game per week, you know, with the European Champions League and continental championships, in fact this week Champions League is upon us and clubs are going to play 2 games.

"Ice Hockey player whose body is protected with helmets and a lot of padding does not really suffer, simple!
a footballer whose body has no protection save for a pair of shinpads really suffers a lot, simple!"

And yet, there are 10 times as many injuries in hockey as there are in soccer.

Here Pedro, before you sound like even more of an imbecile than you already do (oops too late) take a look at this. I didn't have to search too hard.

I didn't have to search too hard. This happend on the weekend. If you want, I'll find you something else tomorrow from tonight's games that will further prove your ignorance. How many serious injuries like this happened in UAFA this weekend?
Ummm....NONE.

"And let us not forget that sometimes footballers play more than 1 game per week,"

Big deal. Let us not forget that "sometimes" NHL teams play more than three times in one week. Boston, for instance, plays 5 games in the next seven nights.

Give it up Pedro, you are fighting a losing battle.

They shouldnt really be compared.

Hockey is a contact sport.
I dont like it myself, but its a tough game.

Football isnt a contact sport.
But its tougher than you think.

soccor is 90 min of slow jogging with short sprints, the whole 90 min thing is way played.

a good player in the nhl plays 20-30 min a game at full speed.

using the 3-5 min a game is the same as using a soccor player that gets sub'd in the last 5 min of a game.

this guy have no idea what he is taking about.

its simple pysics man.

a puck can kill a player without padding, a soccor ball may at worse give you a concussion.

soccor players do wear padding also, shin pads. to do what? protect the area that after many years is found to be at highist risk.

i played soccor ive done 5 games in 3 days. so i dont get what your really saying its so hard on the body? i loved it. even played in a few back to back games as in play with my team then right after change jersey and play with a club that needed a player. used to keep my call up/ temp transfer stuff right in my bag so i could.

now ped think about it, your the only one in here saying soccor is tougher on the body then hockey..

now when i was about 10 i learned something. if you think 1 person is a idiot then they may just be, if your thinkng 2 people are then its time to start looking at yourself, if the whole bloody room dissagrees with you more then not your the one thats wrong.

now take your time and think dont just type out some quick response. maybe sit wacth a bit of hockey and ask yourself a few questions.

no one is saying beacouse soccor isnt as tough on the body that it doesnt take skill to play, that its not a good sport. just relax man and dont answer with your heart answer with your head.

Hey Smackemhard you need take your own advice on typing slowly. Your spelling is terrible. It's soccer NOT soccor. I do agree with your analysis of the differences between soccer and hockey. Unless you've played both games you cannot comment intelligently. Clearly Pedro hasn't played both. Soccer is a tough game, you need to be in shape, but hockey is by far more physically demanding. I can't play hockey anymore because I'm too small, but I can still play soccer because size isn't as important in soccer

i am not going into insults.

let us put things in their right place!

i already have admitted and agreed that in Ice Hockey you have terrible impacts, impacts at a higher speed, so the hits and impacts are worse than others you find in different sports. however, it is the helmets and pads which receive the impacts, not the real body as i think of a human body!

the title of the thread says clearly: which sport is tougher on the body? as far as i know a body is formed by legs, knees, etc and most important of all, by a HEART!

let me inform you all that many footballers have died on the field, some goalkeepers died hitting their heads against the posts. not long ago a Scottish player collapsed on the field, a Spaniard as well, some Africans....... they collapsed because their hearts were exhausted and did not stand the heavy and hard pace of the game.

you all north americans often say footballers only run back and forth, even you dare say they walk on the field. well i bet you a wage if you are able to 'walk' for 90 minutes.

how many Hockey players have died, collapsing on the field?

i have not watched the link. what for? to see another impact? i already agreed that you have worse hits and impacts, worse hits and impacts which are by the way 'welcomed' by helmets and pads.

"i am not going into insults."
Well, there's a switch. Virtually every second post you have in ANY thread, you insult North Americans. That's why I have no problem labelling you.

Hockey players that have died? Gee. I have to go back a whole two weeks to find a hockey players whose heart gave out...at the ripe old age of 19 years old. Calgary Flames NHL draft pick and captain of the OHL's Windsor Spitfires, Mickey Renaud.

As for admitting that the inpact in hockey hits are greater, you say you admit that and then in the next sentence say the padding they wear protects them from all that. You decline to watch the video because, I'm figuring if you did, it would be the first three minutes of hockey you have ever watched in your life. You are trying to febate a subject without any knowledge whatsover on one half of the topic. That is what makes you look so silly.

"you all north americans often say footballers only run back and forth, even you dare say they walk on the field. well i bet you a wage if you are able to 'walk' for 90 minutes"

First of all, I find it rather egomaniacal of you to think you know how "all North Americans" feel about anything. I suppose it's the same as how you spoke on behalf of "all Europeans" a couple of weeks ago. Get off your high horse Pedro. Now, in regards to the "walking" business, rtead the post. It says nothing about "walking" for 90 minutes. Furthermore, as I stated int he post, it wasn't opinion. It was a study done in 1971, using Everton FC as a guinea pig and following that team throughout its season.
That, Pedro is what you call PROOF. Not opinion. PROOF. Kind of like the link I offered for you to watch. More PROOF. PROOF that padding does nothing to stop certain injuries from happening.

I'll steal a quote from a fellow poster to end this post: Don't let your hate for everything North American get in the way of the facts, Pedro

Hi Frankster,
The study I read confirms that football has indeed changed since 1971 and it estimates that the distance covered by footballers has increased since then. It also claims the distance covered in a South American game is slightly less than that ocvered in a European game. It's actually a pretty informative article...despite the fact it was published by U.S. Soccer (dig)

I'd have to say that soccer is more of an athletic sport than hockey in some respects - however hockey takes a huge toll on your body... while you may see guys sitting down on the bench every couple of minutes your heart never really stops pounding before it is your time to get back on the ice again - it is like being a sprinter who races every two minutes. And as much padding as we wear, those boards aren't cushioned and those sticks can do some major damage. I've been knocked out more times than i can count.

I play soccer in the summer as well so that I stay in top form for the winter hockey season so I do appreciate how physical a sport soccer is - but in the summer I also appreicate the lack of bruises!!

I'd agree with rugby - or Aussie Rules Football. But NFL? Only for the quarterback. He gets hit pretty much every snap of the ball.

You know Pedro, you have how many people here telling you they play hockey and the protection does very minimal..and yet you still use this protection crap?

Do us a favor and dont start threads if your just going to sit here and say.. nope your wrong nope your wrong to everyone that responds.

When you play hockey your shifts are generally a minute long.. in which you dont stop skating... there is tons of walking/jogging in soccer hockey players play every day to 3 days.. it isnt that uncommon to see them play 3 days in a row

uhhh nfl is in no way more of an impact sport than hockey.. are you friggen insane? They wear MORE padding and you show me someone in the nfl that runs faster than any nhler can skate.

Rugby is ouch... but lacrosse is much more violent than rugby ever was.

I havnt ever played football, but rugby, lacrosse, and hockey in highschool

Hockey is much rougher than soccer or football. Soccer is worse for the knees and ankles maybe though. But I'd rather compare it to the "toughest sport in the US". Lets see an NFL team play 82 games in 6.5 months. Gary Roberts walks off of the ice with a broken leg on his own power. Players lose a teeth or get a bad cut, they're back in the game in minutes. If a lineman in the NFL stubs a pinky, he gets the ambulance (exaggerating ..slightly). Now if football players played offense and defense without subs like in the olden' days, it might be different. Australian rules football is pretty sick though. I wish it was still on ESPN.

throw some hockey equitment on a soccer player(pick who ever you want),let him take a legal hit from georges laraque.then take georges out and do whatever it is you figure during soccer will happen to cause him physical damage.i know one guy you wont be picking to do this.that would be the one laraque took out in the corner.

I'm a footballer through and through, my only hockey experience being street hockey as a kid. My gut reaction is hockey is tougher on the body, you can get going pretty quick on skates and then just nail someone. Football is far from non contact though, I've had broken fingers, ankles, two knee surgeries, broken nose, and lots of strains and pulls.
I'm not buying the fitness arguements I've seen on here either. The exertion is differnet, so they train differently. Its like saying an olympic wrestler only has to last 3 2 minute periods, what could be easier than that? Ever wrestle? Most people would puke after the first minute.
My last comment is have any of you seen the stats they show in the Champions League matches when they sub someone? They post how far they have been during the match. Soem of them are between 10,000 - 15,000 metres. sure it isn't all running, but that is a LOT of ground to cover, much of it running.... and for all you americans too stupid to learn metric, that is almost 10 miles.

Off topic of discussion: Jumby, how good of you to learn the metric system all on your own, but that comment is a little harsh, don't ya think? As a Canadian, I learned both the Imperial system and the Metric system in school, but if the standards had not changed in this country I am not sure I would have learned metric all on my own. Would that have made me a stupid person? Nope, I'm still a smart little cookie.

Why would most Americans learn the Metric system if they have absolutely no use for it? Don't belittle others because you know something they do not. Guaranteed, they will be knowledgeable in something you are not.
