| Which sport is tougher on the body: hockey or soccer? Posted: 5/8/2008 10:24:00 AM | | maybe a little harsh, too lazy might be better? I don't know everything, have never claimed to, and know full and well there is always something someone else knows I don't. that said, the reason this country isn't metric like the rest of the world is they tried to change in the 70's and the population of this country couldn't figure it out. and yes, I was taught it at that time and still remember it. | |

| Which sport is tougher on the body: hockey or soccer? Posted: 5/8/2008 10:49:37 AM | Soccer does not have the high impact hits like you see in hockey, but those high impact hits don't happen all the time in hockey either. You get to see them all though! That's part of the attraction to the sport as a spectator.
Soccer is very demanding on the body and required a level of fitness that a lot of hockey players never attain. (Don't give me the argument that the pros do, of course they do they are pros!)
I might compare it this way Soccer is like a meat grinder where hockey is like a sledge hammer. Yes, you definatly more likely to get hurt playing hockey. I don't think it's as draining as playing a full game of soccer at the same level (eg semi pro, beer league etc)
My personal opinion is soccer is actually tougher on the body than Hockey in general. A well framed question by the OP by the way. You simply can not play a game of soccer two days apart and not see it in your play.
If your defination is which sport are you more likely to get hurt playing then Hockey is your answer.

| Which sport is tougher on the body: hockey or soccer? Posted: 5/10/2008 4:02:37 PM | It's kind of like field hockey, as best as I can gather, although I have never seen a game, live or on TV. Not sure, but I think it's older than field hockey and that field hockey is kind-of an off-shoot of hurling. Maybe Celtic can fill us in. I'd love to see it, just based on what some European sports fans I know say about it. Maybe when I finally take that dream trip of mine, to visit my acestral roots in Ireland, I'll get the chance.
Although as for it being tough on the body, I thought checking was illegal in hurling?

| Which sport is tougher on the body: hockey or soccer? Posted: 5/10/2008 4:50:31 PM | Wide World of Sports in it's opening back in the 70s used to show that scene of a hurler being sandwiched between to defenders as he crumbled to the ground.
I can't se it being tougher than hockey though.

| Which sport is tougher on the body: hockey or soccer? Posted: 5/11/2008 3:50:05 PM | I think when you say which sport is "tougher on the body", you have to look at it from to ways. In terms of which sport one can get a better exercise/work out from just by simply playing it.....I would say soccer. I think soccer can give you more of a work out then hockey, although both are very good at giving you work outs because both require ALOT of moving and hard work and being in tip top shape. Now..... as it relates to which sport out of the two, is one in more rick to be injured, then in THAT light I would say hockey!! So in THAT particular sense, hockey is harder and rougher of the body. So there are two different ways to view it.
1) Which sport (in and off itself, or by itself) can one get a better work out/excercise and requires alittle more stamina and being in good shape?...I would give the edge to soccer in that sense.
2) Which sport can potentially or does infact take a bigger toll on the body, taking into account all the hits, and physical contact and so forth?.... in that case I would say Hockey.
BUT as a side note. Which team sport on average has the best atheletes?????.....THAT answer is Basketball

| Which sport is tougher on the body: hockey or soccer? Posted: 5/12/2008 11:33:51 AM | Hurling is just one of those old field sports that were created in the British Isles centuries ago.
those sports, say, football, field hockey, rugby, gaelic football are very similar if you think about the roots of the game.
in hurling they have a net similar to a football's, only they add posts over the net like in rugby.
pitches are similar as well, players from field hockey, hurling, rugby or football look quite similar.
it is a pity that only in Ireland you see people really interested in it, the rest of people prefer football (even the poster celtic chic is a Celtic supporter)

| Which sport is tougher on the body: hockey or soccer? Posted: 5/12/2008 12:39:58 PM | | Hurling is NOTHING like football or rugby. It is an ancient Irish game, not from the British isles. It is almost impossible to describe if you've never played it or seen it played properly. Hurling was my first sport. Played it for years. By far the fastest field game in the world... | |

| Which sport is tougher on the body: hockey or soccer? Posted: 5/13/2008 11:12:57 AM | first of all, under my point of view Ireland is a part of the British Isles (maybe i am wrong right now if we talk of political matters) but it used to be..............
second, i did NOT say that Hurling is like football or rugby. what i said is that they are similar in some ways, have plenty in common if you think of the roots of the game.
pitches are similar, of course with their own marks i know, but they are quite similar! players look similar as well. also you have the net as in football with posts over it.
of course they are different sports with their own rules (thinking about the rules they are quite different) but i was not talking of the rules, only that they have plenty in common.
now say whatever you desire to, just to disagree with me

| Which sport is tougher on the body: hockey or soccer? Posted: 5/13/2008 11:27:12 AM | The roots of rugby are relatively modern. Hurling is 1000s of years old guy. Look I played it since I was able to walk. It is nothing like rugby and the roots of rugby are nothing like hurling. Furthermore, hurling is about the MOST UNBritish sport we have in this country - as in- Republic of Ireland - not part of the British isles (no offence to anyone...but it is a total remove from any of the sports fostered in the British isles).
Comparing hurling with Rugby is like comparing tabletennis with soccer. They don't look anything alike and do not share any common heritage.
And if you can show me anyone playing hurling that looks like a tight-head prop then I'd be very surprised. Hurling players are traditionally quite light, lean and quick...carrying a lot of weight is a hindrance in hurling. In the modern rugby game, you have to have tremendous upper body strength and often bulk in order to compete, not so AT ALL in hurling!

| Which sport is tougher on the body: hockey or soccer? Posted: 5/13/2008 1:17:00 PM | | That's like saying American Football's not really a sport because it stops every couple of seconds or basketball or baseball...the fact that some players in soccer look for soft fouls doesn't take away from the fact that it is BY FAR AND AWAY the most popular sport in the world and a fantastic game to look at. At least when we watch the biggest games in soccer we get to watch a whole half uninterrupted with ads every few seconds!!! | |

| Which sport is tougher on the body: hockey or soccer? Posted: 5/13/2008 1:32:21 PM | kaos86, soccer does have alot of diving, no question, but hockey is becoming soccer on ice with all the diving in the NHL playoffs. The way the refs are calling the game is becoming embarassing and literally is soccer on ice.

With all the diving... Is soccer a sport?
Soccer is a sport dude, without a doubt.

Plllllease!....Your compare and contrast is awful.

| Which sport is tougher on the body: hockey or soccer? Posted: 5/14/2008 12:18:17 AM | Go ahead and laugh, motocross covers both of these sports on conditioning and strain on the body. There have been scientific studies comparing most major sports and motocross comes out on top. A full 40 muinet race going flat out with 250 pounds of bike flying around under you sure takes a toll. Its actually a big part of my physical training. Its not like riding a bike around on the street! They are among the highest longest sustained heart rates and calorie burn in sports. What soccer player stays out for 40 straight muinets? Besides, most guys get up after a crash and keep on rolling, you get some whiney european "bad boy" that gets hurt and he lays there for 5 muinets crying. I love hockey and motocross, toughest sports going! | |

| Which sport is tougher on the body: hockey or soccer? Posted: 5/14/2008 1:21:57 AM | I actually would think a professional jockey has motocross beat by a mile. In fact, from reserach I read about...they have. As for the American attitude toward soccer. Having lived there for 8 years, I'm kind of used to hearing it. I think a lot of it comes down to not understanding the game. Of course there are a handful of cheats, but soccer is far more physical than one might think and soccer players cover close to 10 miles every game so their endurance is right up there. Often people don't realize that when someone comes through your legs at speed with their studs up...you get badly knocked, it looks innocent enough but what some of you don't get is that there's a big difference from getting body checked, which apart from getting shook up, rarely does much damage and getting kicked through by a player sliding in, that can really mess you up. I invite anyone to look at the following link...it looks a rather innocuous challenge on an Arsenal player from a few months back. Now look at the damage:
