| what consitutes drinking??? Posted: 3/8/2007 1:17:00 PM | | I wouldn't condiser you an alcoholic, but I wouldn't consider you a social drinker either. If it is only one glass a day then put on your profile more than 3x per week. i would maybe clarify in your profile about your drinking habits. Personally I probably would have called you on it, as I won't be with anyone that drinks at all. I grew up with two alchy fathers, so it is something that I'm particular about. | |

There are many cultures such as Italian where the kids are used to a bit of wine from a young age and wine is used in cooking fairly frequently. The person who called you an alcoholic is simply ignorant.
I've known relatively few true alcoholics and yeah, it's not a pretty picture. But I don't consider guys who stop off each night for a couple of beers on their way home to be such even if they do it 5 nights per week more often than not.
If I did my entire community (Corso Italia) would be labelled.

If your drinking is getting in the way of your work... THEN... you might have a drinking problem.

As a simple test, I encourage you to stop having that glass at dinner for a week, an entire week. Then see how you feel. Was it hard? Could you even do it? Did you have a strong desire to give in and have that glass? That will give you your answer, darlin ;)

| what consitutes drinking??? Posted: 3/9/2007 6:39:07 PM | many times i am forced to work long hours, 12 or 16 hours shifts, so on these days i do not have my glass of wine, and is not a problem. i was raised in an italian home and from about the age of 10 or 12 i started having wine with my dinner.
it was never a big deal, just something that was started when i was young and i have continued with. until recently, i have never even given any thought.
thank you all for your thoughts and opinions.

| what consitutes drinking??? Posted: 3/10/2007 12:06:24 AM | The pope is an alcoholic.
There it is, someone said it.
Anyway, I think the point is just to say you use some on your profile because its more honest. As long as this glass is not one of those half gallon mega sized coffee mugs the quikee mart sells you're being honest enough.
I put down I am a social drinker on my profile just to lean towards the side of honesty but the truth is I haven't touched a drink in months. The last two I had were back in October with meals while traveling. But saying I did not drink at all would not exactly be honest, either, so I picked the one I thought would be easiest for others to understand honestywise although basically I consider myself a non drinker.
I prefer my wine in my cooking and have several kinds on hand for that.

| what consitutes drinking??? Posted: 4/18/2007 2:03:32 PM | I like to cook with wine, sometimes I'll even put it in the food I'm cooking......
One glass a day is not an alcoholic, even if you crave it and enjoy it. It's a nice way to relax at the end of the day. You are still in control of yourself as long as like others here are saying it's not a 750 ml wine glass.

| what consitutes drinking??? Posted: 4/20/2007 9:11:36 AM | It the ambiguity of the word that causes confusion. Then how do you bring up the subject without comming across as nosy or preachy. If you drink in moderation, and you are a slave to alcohol, then I wouldn't consider that to be an alcoholic. For alcoholics, alcohol generally has a very negative impact on their lives. Having a glass of wine with dinner or a couple of beer watching a game doesn't make you an alcoholic.
As we're on the subject, how do people react to the weekend drinkers? The people that seem to be always looking for the next party. I see that a lot in our local forums, and while it may have been something I did in my younger years, it certainly isn't very attractive anymore. Maybe it's just me.....lol

| what consitutes drinking??? Posted: 4/21/2007 12:19:28 PM | Nope, you are not an alchy dude. One glass of wine at nite does not any alchy make. Whoever said that you were an alchy isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. I think saying you drink socially on your profile is ok - if you said often 3+ times a week some might get the wrong impression. Just my opinion. | |
