| Funky Offbeat Memories for those 40+.... Posted: 3/8/2007 2:36:19 PM | Wow! This thread really brought back some good memories!!
Juke boxes in the booth, shopping at Kresge's and Woolworth's, Koo Koos, Wigwags,Lucky Seven Pop, Moe Joes 5 for a penny, and when Hostess came out with the fruit flavoured chips. YUK!!!
Kiddles (little dolls inside perfume bottles), North Star running shoes, painter pants, mushroom lamps, your first clock radio with the numbers that flipped and made so much noise you couldn't sleep!
Collecting pop bottles, making prank phone calls (Is your refrigerator running?)...no call display!!!
Sunday night tv, Tiny Talent Time, Bugs Bunny Road Runner Hour (Overture, curtain, lights...), Wonderful World of Disney and Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom!!!
Anyone remember going to slumber parties and playing a game (don't remember what it was called), where all the lights were turned off and one person layed on the floor. Everyone else placed two fingers of each hand under their body and with ease you could lift them off the floor??!
Gremlins and Pacers! | |

| Funky Offbeat Memories for those 40+.... Posted: 3/8/2007 5:10:55 PM | How things have changed over the years ? How many kids do you see out flying a kite, let alone having to make their own.
Does anyone remember the pop called Tabb ? How about Sportsmen, or Black Cat smokes ? watching David and Goliath, as a kid ? A bicycle called a Fastback 100 ? when 2,3,5, and then 10 speed bikes were made ? When back in the early 70's Chyrsler put sensors in the seats of the Barracuda's, and if you didn't have your seatbelt done up, your car wouldn't start ? (why would they ever get rid of that , with todays seatbelt laws ?) What about those black overhead projecters we had as kids, that we could put on a picture, and have it go against your bedroom wall ? How about when Chevrolet came out with a car called the Citation, and it came with a bag of rope, and a plate that would bolt over your rim, so you could tie it to a tree, and pull your self out of a ditch or wherever you were stuck ? (the commercial for it even showed it driving down the road with only one rear wheel, to show you that you could even keep driving to get your flat fixed lol)

| Funky Offbeat Memories for those 40+.... Posted: 3/8/2007 7:21:03 PM | here is something I read recently
TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !! First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes. Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking. As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this. We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank koolade made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING ! ! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computer! s, no Internet or chat rooms....... WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever. We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them! Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law! These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever! The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL! If YOU are one of them . . CONGRATULATIONS! You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave (and lucky) their parents were. Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?! The quote of the month is by Jay Leno: "With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"

| Funky Offbeat Memories for those 40+.... Posted: 3/8/2007 9:40:16 PM | This thread is great fun, it's bringing back fantastic memories...appreciate the thans from curly and others, but a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone for bringing a smile to my face...I'm just sitting here smiling and nodding as I read through the posts. Glen Eagles someone mentioned...lol, yeah I went in there (the Robin Hood too) and lived to tell about it.
X-mas of 1977 I got Matel Electronic Football...it was like a scene from the movie 'A Christmas Story'...all the gifts had been opened and I hadn't gotten it, then my Dad says "there's one more present way back there against the wall (he'd put it there on purpose, where it wouldn't be seen). When I opened it I went absolutely ape shit...jumping up and down like a lunatic screaming "I GOT IT, I GOT IT". I played that game till the buttons were worn out. Just 6 little blips of light, one bright and 5 dim....If I picked one up right now I would score a touchdown first try.
I think the last vestige of my childhood slipped away when I decided I wanted a pair of designer jeans...("designer just meant jeans with attitude and an extra 50% markup)...Sergio Valentes I think was the brand. My old man refused to buy them when GWG's were so cheap. He told me to get a job and buy 'em for myself. So I did...I worked at McDonalds...and when I'd finally saved enough from my $2.00 an hourish wage...Well, I thought about how hard I'd worked for the money, and all of a sudden those dumb jeans didn't seem that important.

That came after International Beverages, that delivered large bottles in a wooden crate, my dad's Vauxhall, Barbie making her first appearance, then the "Tressie" doll, no "automated" games unless you wound them up to make them work, gold nuggets bubble gum, drinking the cream off the top of the milk we got in a bottle.....

| Funky Offbeat Memories for those 40+.... Posted: 3/9/2007 8:19:21 AM | Well I liked the Saturday morning cartoons. Captin Cave man.. the wonder twins.. Rodger Ramjet, Rocket Robin Hood. Pop in glass bottles for .25 cents, then returning them and getting 5 cents back. Pop Rocks, chips for .25 cents again.. Ice skating all evening until it was too dark out and not being afarid to go home alone, through the park. Recess.. yea sure they still have it.. but they don't have the same games.. like tossing the tennis ball against the signs.. I wonder if I can still play jumpsies.. anyone got lots of elastic bands? | |

| Funky Offbeat Memories for those 40+.... Posted: 3/9/2007 3:26:15 PM | | I was thinking...with what we're paying for gas, it'd be nice if they had little give aways like they used to. When I was a kid in the 70s Shell gave away matchbox cars, and another station gave away glasses with the emblems of all the NFL teams...my dad still has a couple left. | |

| Funky Offbeat Memories for those 40+.... Posted: 3/10/2007 9:24:19 AM | Remember having to take the streetcar along Bloor Street to Keele because the subway didn't go any further.
Being able to ride our bicycles at 6am in the alleys behind the stores looking for really cool stuff the stores would throw out.
Maxi coats, platform shoes and hardly anyone wore glasses or "contacts".
Special visits with mom to the amazing lunch counter in Woolworth's at Adelaide and Bay in TO.
A special school field trip to see the movie 2001 when it first came out.
Another class field trip was an actual plane ride circling around Toronto! Don't remember the details too well of what kind of plane it was, but remember we got a "barf bag" of goodies to take home with us!
The opening of a new store called "Beckers", nothing else like it in the neighbourhood back then! I think the opening day special was something like 3 loaves of bread for a quarter or something which mom sent us both seperately to get!
The popcorn cart that used to come around the school at lunch hour with these big red lolipops, can't remember what what they were called.... some were round, some were long and twisted and all kinds of other goodies.
Darn, wish I could remember everything..... way more fun for us kids back in those days.

| Funky Offbeat Memories for those 40+.... Posted: 4/2/2007 8:59:30 PM | How about Camp Caribou or Goober and the Ghostchasers. The twilight zone. Had many restless sleeps after watching that one. My parents shouldn't have let me stay up for it. Pop rocks and crackerjacks. Wax lips, bottlecaps candy and popeye cigaterres...mmm. Pizza flavoured popcorn(also many other flavours). Oh ya, and those cinamon flavoured hot toothpics. Cherry clackers and veiw finder. My sister actually had a Mrs. Beasley doll...hehe. I had smash-up derby cars. Actually turning a dial to get 'all' 12 channels. Then getting the 'box' with the 30 ft wire and a whole bunch of push buttons to get 12 more channels. Climbing trees then faling out, riding your banana seat bike over a ramp and going for stitches. Instead of (today's kids)yelling "Mom!!! The computer's down again." The dreaded 8-track. I loved going to the car wash with my dad and watching the big brushes clean the windows. Trying to draw circles on an etch-a-scetch and always settling for stairs. I remember that stuff like it was yesterday...sigh. Ahh to be a kid again.
Now ask me if I can remember anything from when i was 17-29. All a blurr. Suprised I made it this far...lol
Great thread! Luv ya L8r all Chris

No sticker required on you plate. Five bucks would get you a 24 beer and a pack of smokes. Waterfalls and duck tails where hair styles. Yikes The Hawks nest, La coc'dor, Brown derby and Grossmans. | Funky Offbeat Memories for those 40+.... Posted: 4/3/2007 2:19:22 AM | The price of gasoline only fluctuated a few cents ... per gallon (and, it was 19 cents a litre when the government forced us to switch to metric because they were afraid the price of gas would go up to ... $1.00 a gallon ... hmmm ...)
BA gas stations (British American)
There's an old Red Barn on O'Connor, South of Eglinton.
How about "The Copper Kettle"? (on Lawrence between Pharmacy and Warden)
Loved those yellow police cars - you could find one when you needed one ... (and, unlike the stupid white patrol cars they have now which disappear in snow storms ... people got out of the way when they had their old-fashioned siren on ...)
Yup to tube tester at the corner store (which really was around the corner, and had penny candy)
The rotor for the TV antenna on the roof.
Milk in a three quart, glass bottle! (recycling YEARS ahead of its' time ...)
And ... there really was a Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) with an honest-to-goodness aircraft carrier (HMCS Bonaventure, or "The Bonnie", and a Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) flying Sabres, CF100 "Clunks", F104 Starfighters, F5's, Twin Huey choppers and ... Chinooks!
