| How did you start playing the electic/acoustic guitar? Posted: 4/12/2007 11:12:37 PM | | Growing up I was put in classes for gymnastics, dance, theatre, and singing. I liked them, but I got bored really easily. That whole time my brother was taking guitar lessons. I was really uninterested in it, but when my brother had a big concert, I went to it since he always came to my competitions and what not. After watching him I really wanted to learn how to play, so I took classes in the 8th grade and quit immediately because it was hard it and it hurt. Then my senior year came around for high school and all of my guy friends around me could play. I would go to there shows and always think to myself "I wish I could do something like that." So finally I went out and got a guitar. I stuck with it and took lessons. Now I love it more than any of my other hobbies, and I've only been playing for like a year and 1/2. | |

| How did you start playing the electic/acoustic guitar? Posted: 4/13/2007 1:14:14 AM | ^^^sort of similar story here.Year and a half? It only gets better....give 'er:) My mom bought a beater acoustic when I was about 12, and she had planned to teach herself to play it.(She's got gr 10 piano) Well, she never did, and all I accomplished was some one or two string smoke on the water and iron man lol, until much later. I had a classical for a while, which I learned a few chords on, and ended up selling. A few years later I got myself a bass, and played it for about 4 years. Lots of fun, but I needed more versatility. So about 8 or so years ago, I got myself a really nice acoustic which I still have today, and started lessons immediately. As soon as my teacher started me on blues scales, it wasn't long until I had my tele. The g.a.s. had begun haha.

| How did you start playing the electic/acoustic guitar? Posted: 4/16/2007 6:47:10 PM | The Beatles, the Beatles, the Beatles
Asked my dad to get me a guitar and he bought me this junker that had strings a half inch from the fretboard. Took lessons for about a month and the teacher just wanted to teach me "Mary Had a Little Lamb", did not get very far. Years later I bought a halfway decent Yamaha and taught myself some Beatles tunes but still did not get very good. When I hit my thirties I said to myself it is now or never, bought a good Fender Strat and it became my goal to learn everything I could about guitars. I now build them as a hobby (my fave and best guitar is a tele style with one humbucker, a real beauty) I am no virtuoso but I can play well enough to satisfy my soul, and play Beatles tunes.
As a side note, I am also into synths now and the same magic has occurred

| How did you start playing the electic/acoustic guitar? Posted: 4/16/2007 10:40:19 PM | | Been into music since I was about 9, but got into guitar later in high school around 16/17. I heard 'Welcome To The Jungle' at the right place and the right time and bought that GNR album soon after. I got into more heavy music which obviously has some great guitar players. I wanted to sound like them and started practicing on a cheap nylon string acoustic and became a little obsessive about improving. Gradually I got better equipment and started jamming with different musicians. | |

| How did you start playing the electic/acoustic guitar? Posted: 4/17/2007 9:54:31 PM | | I always wanted to play. I have pics at 3-4 years old with toy guitars. My mom was a hippy and played the Beatles constantly. I wanted a Rickenbacker. and finally, I saved up $400 and got one. Haven't put it down since. Funny part of the story is, the first song I ever twanged out on my little Rick was...."satisfaction" | |

Posted: 4/18/2007 12:04:47 PM | | I bought Pantera's "The Great Southern Trendkill" when I was 13 years old.....as soon as I heard my first Dimebag solo, I knew I HAD to do that. So, long story short...10 years, 13 guitars, and a bunch of live shows later, I'm writing some of the best and most fun music of my life. I can't imagine going even a day without playing at this point. I'm 100% self-taught, and I'm currently working on mastering Michael Angelo Batio's "Speed Lives" shred DVD.

| How did you start playing the electic/acoustic guitar? Posted: 4/20/2007 7:53:18 PM | Why else ?? ... A woman. I was so in love with the flute player in the high school band and I'd heard she was also a very good classical guitarist. So I went to the pawn shop, picked up an old nylon-string guitar, looked very, very interested, and asked her to teach me a little about how to play it. D*mn ... I was so-o-o-o smooth back then. My young floutist is long a part of my past but I still have a nylon-string guitar in the corner of the livingroom and I still play it every now and then.

| How did you start playing the electic/acoustic guitar? Posted: 4/27/2007 2:07:11 PM | I've always loved rock music, and always wanted to learn how to make my own. Unfortunately, I was always under the impression that musical instruments cost a fortune, and my school didn't give guitar lessons, just "band" instruments. I played the trumpet for a few years but wound up hating it.
Eventually I picked up a copy of "Guitar Hero" for my Playstation and got pretty good at it. I had no idea if said skill would translate over to the real thing but I was having a lot of fun. So when one of the loading screens read "maybe you should think about getting a real guitar", I figured "hey, maybe guitar is the instrument for me after all." So I looked into it and discovered that starter instruments were well within my price range. So I bought one and started teaching myself how to play using various books.
I won't be giving Buckethead a run for his money any time soon, but I'm having fun.

| How did you start playing the electic/acoustic guitar? Posted: 4/29/2007 5:23:29 AM | I am a low strings player, and wanted an instrument that I could easily buy and play. I had played viola, cello and bass in school.
I had tried 6 string guitar a few times and just couldn't pick up on it that quickly. So I went out and got me a bass guitar. Right away I could pick it up and play. A few things took a little longer like getting the frets to not buzz. Thats a new thing because I had only played fretless/upright bass. But I'm lovin' it. Besides I prefer bass instruments. I'm what you call bass-oriented. I can also read music and play by ear, so I can play just about anything my fingers will let me.

| How did you start playing the electic/acoustic guitar? Posted: 4/30/2007 7:01:53 PM | I used to be the drummer in all the bands (lost count) I ever played in, and when it seemed they weren't staying together for very long (for one reason or another), I switched to accoustic guitar, and taught myself to play.
I did this primarily because I enjoy music, and although I'm no Clapton, I do enjoy packing my Takamine Jasmine in my trunk when I go on vacation somewhere, and join in when I find an "Open Mike" type of bar.
It's a lot of fun, and I have been taught a lot of new "licks" this way. It's also easier to transport!
I highly recommend it whether you're a novice or have been playing for a while.
It helps if you have an accoustic/electric so as not to interfere with the more "learned" musicians on the stage. (In other words, you can choose to play "unplugged" until you're familiar with the chord progressions.)
Cool thread, thanks. | |

| How did you start playing the electic/acoustic guitar? Posted: 5/10/2007 9:54:13 PM | | I started taking guitar seriously in 1985. I was 13 at the time and my main influences were Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, and George Lynch. I started playing along to Black Sabbath and AC/DC albums. In 1985 I started ordering cassette-and-booklet courses from Metal Method. They're still around today and now offer lessons on DVD. Once, Doug Marks called me to check on the status of my order. Real high-class act! | |

| How did you start playing the electic/acoustic guitar? Posted: 5/13/2007 12:24:42 AM | It was by chance a tragic accident that led me to playing the guitar and my passion for music. It all began in the summer of 1963. I snuck a popscicle from the ice chest with the intent of sharing it with my sister. I'm told that i retrived a butcher knife and was going to cut the popscicle in half and share a half with my sister. Now my sister being a few years older than I literally freaked out with me having a knife demanded I give the knife to her, however I was too young to know that you dont hand over the knife with the blade in your hand. As I handed her the knife she had the handle in her hand, and I was very adamant about wanting that popscicle, so I pulled back on the blade and cut three of my fingers nearly completely off my left hand. They rushed me to the hospital and did a marvelous job suturing my fingers back, many stiches I must add. I was in critical condition for about three days because of the massive blood loss. My sister cried for days because I didn't come back home and it was quite a tragic for her ( she thought she had killed her only brother ). Upon coming home and the wounds healed I didn't have any movement in my fingers. My father who was a truck driver would come home after being on the road all day long would set me on his lap in his rocking chair and have me squeeze a small rubber ball to regain movement in my hand. As time went by I could open and close my hand but couldn't move my fingers but Daddy always had a plan. He next purchased a six string acoustic guitar from a Sears & Roebuck catalog. My father was a very talented musician and could play many instruments including the guitar steel guitar. During the day I was instructed to listen to the radio and play this guitar he bought for me. On the weekends he would take me on " tour with him " and set me up on stage with him and made me believe I was playing lead whenever he played the lead guitar. It was because of my fathers never ending love that he had for his only son that I recovered from a totally useless hand and have been blessed with the use of my hand and to play musical instruments and have acquired a passion for music. Now, my father is in another wonderful place, maybe even " rocking the house " up there, and as for me, well each time I pick up my guitar I silently thank my father for his wisdom and his love. Put a guitar in my hand, a microphone in front of me, a band behind me, and a huge crowd in front of me and I'm the happiest man alive. Let the good times roll from the legendary MR Larry Nash. | |

| How did you start playing the electic/acoustic guitar? Posted: 5/14/2007 12:09:18 PM | Back around 1978 I was a huge Dylan fan and I seem to remember I bought Live Rust by Neil Young. I couldn't play a chord but the girlfriend's brother was a guitarist and had an old accoustic. I bought a book, a songbook and went away for a few months and came back and played probably something like Sugar Mountain or Comes A Time.
In the late Eighties I had some money so I bought a new 6 string and an ancient 12-string and that was great. I went through a phase of writing some really bad song lyrics and thinking I was some Scottish James Taylor but I soon realised that the masters are the real masters and, as much as I like playing and singing their songs, I cannot compete with genius.
There is nothing as good for a bad mood, having a think, trying to de-stress than sat with your faithful guitar [which is a part of you, isn't it?] and riding the notes, frets and chords till something just sounds suddenly great.

| How did you start playing the electic/acoustic guitar? Posted: 5/14/2007 3:51:17 PM | You have to love playing the guitar! You learn something and you play it. Remember this, If you practise slow you will play it fast, but if you practise fast it will be much more dificult. Play it again and again and again. (slowly!) I belive that when y0u hear a good guitarist you hear someone who has played that same song so many times before. A guy walks up to Leanord Bernstein in New York and he asks him, "How do you get to the Met?' and Leanord Bernstein says, "Practise, practise, practise!" My favorite guitarist is Alvin Lee. He still is my favorite guitarist. | |

| How did you start playing the electic/acoustic guitar? Posted: 5/17/2007 11:05:56 PM | If you like Alvin Lee, give the late Danny Gatton a listen.
He never had a top ten hit, but as a guitarist, he's who I consider a role model.
And you are correct in what you write about practicing! I have a little Tascam unit that slows the guitar part of a cd down without changing the pitch, and it has been a great training aid for me.
