| Going back to school in your 30's.... Posted: 11/9/2008 9:42:53 AM | "Snoogles, I just turned 44 and am back in school as well. As far as your education goes, it's never too late and it is ALWAYS a good thing! I was worried how it would go after being out of school for all of those years, however, I think it's one of the best decisions I've ever made! Good luck!"
Education is not ALWAYS a good thing. Degrees do not always pay off in the marketplace.

| Going back to school in your 30's.... Posted: 11/11/2008 12:28:14 PM | | At 40 yo, I'm almost finished my second semester back in a university with a few years to go for my degree. It's a lot of work and I ask myself all the time, "what the hell do you think you're doing?" lol. But I keep plugging away and am receiving respectable grades. Last semester there was a 74 yo guy in my statistics class, it's never too late. | |

I also had a guy who was 69 years old. What a neat man he turned out to be.He said he had been retired for 8 years and had always wanted to finnish his college degree.Me and him are still friends.

Posted: 11/16/2008 8:49:14 AM | | I renember my mother went back to become an RN in her mid 40's graduated in her late 40's and this was quite a while ago I was in h/s then. I think people of all ages go back 30's and 40's some for a 2nd career because they want to change as was my moms reason.

| Going back to school in your 30's.... Posted: 11/16/2008 4:34:38 PM | | I'm going back to school, for my second degree, and I'm almost 30. You do what you have to do... even if means cutbacks for awhile. It will be worth it, in the end. | |

| Going back to school in your 30's.... Posted: 11/17/2008 12:51:22 AM | | I am right there with you. Single mom, work full time, and go to school full time. I got a full plate too. Just hang in there it is all worth it. | |

Education is not ALWAYS a good thing. Degrees do not always pay off in the marketplace. Those 2 things are not mutually exclusive. Education can still be a good thing, even if it does not pay off in the marketplace in an immediate or obvious way. Education can have inherent rewards not related to career per se.
So I would disagree. Education IS always a good thing.
As for me I am doing a 2 degrees consecutively - Law and Psychology. 5 years to go after this one. Will be back at work not long after the kids are both at school full time. Makes it very hard for now, but I have no doubt it will pay off.

Posted: 11/20/2008 12:55:28 PM | | Doing the online school thing now at 31, going back because I work at a company where a college education is basically required but they made an exception for me based on prior experience/schooling. If I ever want to advance like they want me to be able to I need that piece of paper to make myself more marketable against all the other people in the company who already have that paper.

| FORCED .... Posted: 11/20/2008 3:50:53 PM | hey i applaud your decision. i recently moved my son and I 1200 miles back home from Denver - MUCH to our dismay. I grew up in Houston but do not belong here, and my son is a mountain kid. But, life got ugly - we had two years of some horrific tragedies & traumas, car accidents, comas, surgeries, family suicide, house repo's blah blah blah.
So I'd had a Bach degree almost finished (12 hrs). I'm now back down here completing that degree as part of rebuilding our lives. Also it was to rebuild my soul and mind near my crazy ass (yes they're still crazy, aren't we all) family and old friends.
But I miss Denver and the peacefulness sooooooooooooo bad ... will get back there ;-)
so good for you ... and me !!!

| good timeline Posted: 11/20/2008 3:53:51 PM | | you pointed out that you are getting your education in good timing with the kids' upcoming school years schedule. good planning sister! i hope it works out well. | |

| good timeline Posted: 11/21/2008 12:33:26 PM | | I'm doing this as well. At 22 I was a few incompletes from having an Associates in Graphic Design. Now that I'm 34, separated, and take ADD medicine, I should have no problems finishing up a Bachelor's in Illustration. Working full-time and going to school is tough, but it's worth it. A few years ago I tried to do this, but ended up trying to do it while working 50 hours/week on third shift. It's no wonder that didn't work. Even then I appreciated college much more than I did the first time (and more than most of my younger classmates). I live my life with few regrets, but not finishing college is definitely one of them. It's time to rectify that. | |

| Going back to school in your 30's.... Posted: 11/21/2008 8:38:51 PM | | I never went to college right out of high school like most people do. I didn't start college until about four years ago when I landed a job that reimburses me up to 4 credits per semester. So for the past four years I've been taking just one or two classes per semester and slowly working my way towards a degree. I'm 31 years old and so far I have about 70 college credits. I'll keep taking classes for years to come so long as I have the time and my job keeps reimbursing me. There is so much stuff to learn and you can never have enough knowledge. | |

| Going back to school in your 30's.... Posted: 11/22/2008 9:45:41 PM | | I am in nursing school, age 36. Many in the program with me are 30, 40 +. It's hard, and I do not have the responsibilities of a husband, kids, pets, etc. Many do, and I salute you! I wish I would have done this in the mid 90's like I started out to, but I got sidetracked. It's never to late. Plus, you can meet interesting people in the hospital! McDreamy, McSteamy, etc. | |

| Going back to school in your 30's.... Posted: 11/22/2008 9:46:03 PM | | I was going to go to college after taking a year off after high school. I am now 30 and have two kids, and well I haven't made it there yet. I have been thinking about going back and the biggest reason is, I work in the automotive industry and we all know how well that is doing. So, no I really have to start thinking what is best for me and my kids and going to school getting a career sounds like the right thing to do. I am scared shitless mind you but I think this day and age, we will all be going back to school for something and it doesn't matter how old you are. Always good to better yourself and like you said kinky, you can never have enough knowledge. | |

| Going back to school in your 30's.... Posted: 12/17/2008 6:35:32 PM | You go girl... Don't let being over 30 stop you. I'm 32 and now going back for my Associates Degree in Nursing. On top of that I am single and just adopted two small children and already had a 12 year old.
If you can dream it you can achieve it... I love my career and am glad I made the choice to go back to school. It was a difficult journey but worth the experience.

| Going back to school in your 30's.... Posted: 12/21/2008 3:30:05 PM | What a great thread. I have been contemplating this for years. I haven't been in a school environment since I finished grad school in Dec 1999. I finished my MBA, 33 grad courses in a year. Now, different story. Everyone seems to have had more obstacles than I have and congrats to those that made it through.
I have been trying to put time in to study for the LSAT...but being single, with a mortgage and working in a bad economic environment has made it so tough for me to be able to get through just the LSAT. I was told when I was younger that when you enter the work force, it is very difficult to study again. And, it is hard.
Every time I pick up that book...after the first few questions I get flustered and toss it on the floor. I have to get started soon. I'd love to find someone that is interested in studying with me...man or woman. Email me and we can motivate eachother in that direction.

| Going back to school in your 30's.... Posted: 12/23/2008 12:36:00 PM | I went back to school. A student in one of my classes, believing she was "all that" called me "the mom" one day. She was really rude. The other kids really gave her a hard time about it, and stuck up for me. I didn't have to say a word. It was really sweet.
Stick with it and best of luck!!!!

| Going back to school in your 30's.... Posted: 12/23/2008 6:44:10 PM | actually i just started my school this month for medical offfice assistant course - its a 9 month course with 4 week internship.
since the economy is recession, it is a good time to head back to school to upgrade or even switch careers.
you can never be too old to go back to school!

i have to agree... if you have other committments in life... going to school might not be an option...

| Going back to school in your 30's....It can be done! Posted: 12/23/2008 8:15:01 PM | I went back and earned two degrees after age 40 and it has been great. While it wasn't easy, I would rather be older with a degree (or two) than keep thinking about what I missed. My education allows me to change careers and I am now working at a job that will carry me into my 70s. It isn't work if you love what you do and going back to school keeps you young. Most of my students assume I am 10+ years younger than my age due to my younger attitudes and appearance. GO FOR IT! | |
|
| Going back to school in your 30's.... Posted: 12/24/2008 6:10:30 PM | Well, being older (I'm in my early 40s) has its advantages; mainly that you know more than you realize. One way to speed up the degree is to take the CLEP and DSST tests - $70 bucks apiece, which beats paying $500 per credit (my university). Most universities will take up to 30 credits towards a bachelors. If you're not familiar these tests, just google them.
There's more than one way to skin a cat!
