St. Patrick's Day V St. George's Day!

I am half Irish ¼ Scottish and ¼ Moorish/Spanish but have lived most of my life here in England. I will be celebrating St Paddys day as I do every year, but none of the other national days. I suppose I learnt early on that it was the Irish side who really knew how to have fun whatever the reason. Births, marriages even deaths (The infamous wakes) all celebrated with gusto.

I like to think it’s that sense of fun that is catching and it seems that the peoples of the world all want to be Irish, even if just for that one fantastic day.

It is catching on.. be it slowly, always celebrated st. Patricks day with the irish lot of our family, so for the last two yrs decided to do likewise for st. george. Its as well to get a crowd together though.. or else it will fall a bit flat.

No decor in the city or pubs.. VERY dissapointing. Hope it gets better, we did have a parade of sorts which i missed.. some guy dressed as the dragon etc.. acted it out in the pubs in town, and his area of residence so i believe.. got some publicity good on im!

It's getting better, I reckon in a few years the parades and celebrations will be much bigger. What we need is the day becoming a Bank Holiday. Will make things much more appealing for everyone.

St Paticks day is a global thing as there are many Irish all over the planet....especially in the States. It's also a well established day of partying. St Georges, and every other saints day, just seem boring by comparison.

...but I would certainly vote for it if it meant another 3 day weekend

rish decendants in new york alone, than irish in dublin? or am i wrong? sure some paddy told me that once....

That could be the case, and I do think you're right.years ago they all worked for WIMPEY or as known We Import More Paddys Every Year. But now they've changed nationality to Lithuanian, Hungarian, Polish, Slovakian, You can't go on a big site now and not find an East Yuropean!!! The Lazy Hungry Plastering Skivers.

You should see many Paddy's walking around (especially in a place like Kilburn) dressed up with the Paddy's hat on going from pub to pub, and thoroughly enjoying it. There's nothing wrong with a pint of the Black stuff.

Well my next door neighbour "Murphy" and I had quite a good night out on St Paddys Night we went to a local club which had been hijacked by families with kids who thought the dance floor was for sliding, so we left after a couple and down the road to the the local hostelry, Where we were greeted by a Real Irish group. so Paddy (Who was wearing his prize winning jacket awarded by Guinness to the man that outdrinks them all, ) and I had a night in there and as we had got to the bar as soon as we walked in we never surrendered our places to anyone, after what seemed a terrible night with beer flowing down our necks, and both of us geriatrics kept getting chatted up by young women we headed for home passing the car in the car park, with a promise to it to collect it next day. OH hell the road kept weaving across in front of me as I walked Murphy was at times close and then far away, someone's hedge jumped out in front of me and assaulted me But... I got the better of it in the end. We eventually arrived at mon repose with lots of promises "we'll do that again," and "that was one helluva night." So I suppose that really shows that we can celebrate Even if it's For a Paddy! (And we never spoke about a shovel or a pick all night)

Actually St Patrick was a Welshman as was St David. St Andrew was one of the desciples which leaves David as the only patron Saint from the home countries to come from that country.

If celebrating St George's day is so un PC because of the racism cries celebrate Shakespeare's birthday instead. Same day in case you don't know.

St. Patrick's Day is a non event, concocted by an Irish brewery, to 'celebrate' an Englishman who became feted in Ireland, and which relates to a country which I have no connection with.

It was actually concocted from the first Saint Patrick’s Day parade on March 17th (the anniversary of saint Patrick’s death) 1762 where Irish soldiers who served in the English army marched through the streets of New York which helped the soldiers to reconnect with their Irish roots. It was only after the devastating potato famine in 1845 that the Irish were perceived in newspapers as being violent drunks with funny accents because close to a million poor, uneducated, Catholic Irish were forced to escape starvation by becoming immigrants in America though the way they were perceived and the hardship they fell up on when they reached the land of hope and glory wasn't much better:( . However they and politicians in time realized the shear number of them was important for the chances of a politician wanting to swing the vote in his favour so Saint the Patrick’s day parade became a huge event over the years a: for politicians to gain the vote from Irish nationals and b: Irish nationals fighting stereotypes and racial prejudice to find acceptance in America. And I guess the same goes for other Irish nationals in other countries. This is the story amongst all the bloodshed in the film Gangs of New York if you haven’t noticed.

Also as from 1995 March was chosen as an Irish American Heritage Month in America because of the day.

I fail to see where a brewery comes into how it was concocted?

I celebrate St Geoges day with pride, my shop is always decked out on the day with st Georges flag.
Im not racist and never have been, i love my country and show my loyalty with pride.
Yes the Cross been adopted by the England fans and yes a few are yobs , we are not all hooligans .
During the world cup i made some fantastic friends in Germany from all over the world .
All country men should show their pride be it scottish ,welsh ,english , irish or other side of the world.
Celebrating each others birthland can forge bonds and bring enjoyment to all so lets all embrace these special days

Yes I must agree there's nothing wrong with the old flag of St George flying outside the house. I've got an 8 metre pole and my neighbour "Murphy" has got a 5 Metre one. I gave him it when I got my latest one off Ebay soooo cheap, and any flag you want. Last wife was Russian didn't have the flag but "Have got the T shirt"
I always celebrate St Georges day even if it's with an extra Tea bag. lol

Does it matter. In this PC world they are making for us where they are trying to ban "This little piggy went to market" and "The three little pigs" because it offends certain minorities what chance is there that a Christian Saint's day will be allowed. Hell they are already turning Christmas into Winterval.

St. Patrick's Day is just an excuse for a day off for English people, but for some reason it is more important to us than St George's day?????

Well said that man Nigel 42 Well here's one C*** that don't do as those a****oles tell us. I do hate officious little men, and was working on a crane at Lowestoft the other week and had been sitting doing nothing for a couple of hours but couldn't get out of the seat because as soon as I did someone would want me. So I opened my flask and poured out a cup of coffee. Next thing I heard was this "Pip, Squeak, and wilfred" shouting ".No eating or drinking on the job, so get off site" I said OK no problem, and started to go and get into my car. the foreman came running over."Where you going?" I said he told me off the job. never mind that pr**k we need you not him. Later when I was getting my timesheet all signed up after finishing the job. this little pr**k (Whoops nearly gave him more importance by a capital letter) kept trying to talk to me in the end I just turned round and said "Listen, I have to work with you but I don't have to talk to you. So Fcuk off" there was a definite lot of behind the hands laughing.
So NIGEL42 PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND I WILL JUST HAVE TO EDUCATE THE OTHER NON BELIEVERS OF THE ENGLISH WAY OF LIFE.

Being Englishmen, our celebrations are quite dignified and low-key, and don't usually end with us rolling round in the gutter drunk, like I've noticed several times on 17th March.
