How have your passions changed as you get older?
Posted: 3/17/2007 5:07:05 PM
Interesting question.
I have been wondering about my agenda as of late.
my age has affected me in my ability to bounce back from sickness or pain etc.
my passions to have been affected in a physical sense.
I cannot put the same passion into sport [i.e. hockey, frisbe, baseball, golf] that i could when I had more strength and endurance. This has affected other passions like sculpture also ... due to its physical nature too. The intellectual side can be just as passionate but much like love making passion ... I do not have the endurance and have to watch the fragility of my bones and joints more than I did when young.
I have tried to transfer my needs into the intellectual ... like poetry etc. but ... I do not feel the same satisfaction and drive that I had with my physical passions. I guess i just loved being physical so much that now that its slipping I am feeling the lose.

My passions have basically remained the same. Reading, writing, poetry, country music, healthy living. Along the way, I've added a few. I'm a very passionate person and really don't know how to go at anything half way. I have more time, being retired, to pursue and enjoy them. I too, am always reading something, and carry a book with me at all times. I'm in the process of writing my life story and compiling a book of poetry. And yes, I do get passionate about my relationships. I think that when we lose our passion and zest for life, things really start going down hill.

I'm with Pinebreeze, I no longer go to the anti-war rallies, or worry about finding weed, or trying to change the world. My passion for learning has increased as I have matured, and I read more and wider range of books. I indulge more in broadening my horizons mentaly and emotionaly. I'm taking classes (pottery) that I have always wanted to learn about. I'm spending more time with my very intimate family members and friends, and my dog, less time on things that "need" to be done. I'm traveling more, and am making more plans for retracing some of my travels in Africa when I was young and working there.

I'm going back and taking up things I used to do but haven't in years, oil painting portraits for one, re-learning to play an instrument which I put down 10 years ago, again for "time."

I'm no longer passionate about my career, or making money, or haviing "more things" I have every material thing I want or need and am working on simplifying my life in every way I can so that "things" don't tie me to the ground.

I'm passionate about going into the back country, with my donkeys to pack the load and spending 2 or even 3 months camped on small streams--contemplating the universe.

Widowhood is the pits, I'd love to have another soul mate to share my passions with, to be with me by the streams, but I honestly don't know if I'll ever find someone who is "wild and crazy" enough to enjoy the kind of odd ball things I like. Oxen and airplanes, donkeys and back country camping, making pots or 100 other things I want to learn, or just to sit and enjoy the universe out of the sound of the rest of civilizatoin.

Passion as you get older does Change, I have a deeper understanding and the wisdom that goes along with age to truly understand what real passion is all about, life with out any type of passion for anything is boring and dull. Love with out passion isnt love at all and in time it will disappear, when you are young you confuse lust with love, you really have no idea what passion truly is, either you have passion or you dont , I live my life at this age enjoying passion in everything I do, if I dont have a passion for things, its not worth doing,

One passion that hasn't changed as I turned the half century mark, is travel! The minute I talk about travel, my soul lights up on fire. I'm also passionate about writing, animals, and the outdoors.

What now matters to me, is being able to make a difference in each and everything I do. I want to know that when I leave earth, is I've made a positive difference in someone's life.

yes my passions have change quite a bit. I was more artistic when I was young and working and raising a family too away from that. I would love to get back at writing or painting. I also was so focused on my partner and sex rather than myself. I thought happiness came from the outside. I now know its an inside job. My biggest passion right now is my grandchildren. I have started swimming again which is something I loved as a child . I suffered some major health set backs 5 years ago and this past year Im feeling back to my old self again. So Im now really thinking about what hobbies and interests I want to pursue. Its a great topic and is something that has really been on my mind these days.

Yea, I'd say some of my passions from my youth have changed somwhat. Having had to start over several times from lost loves can, and will kick the crap out of ya, but I still retained my love of music and the outdoors. Actually, my guitars have saved me many times over the years as a means of release and passion.
Another "passion" that has seemed to kick in to high gear in the last 5-10 years has been, should I say this?......my libido. It seems being older and wiser has boosted my confidence in that dept...much more than when I was younger. I have somehow thru it all, kept the "young stud" drive within me. I can enjoy many of same things I've done at an earlier stage of my life, but to warm up to a S.O. on a rainny afternoon is so much better than any golf game..... or any other game for that matter! :-) Really!
Go figure!

My perception of my passions has changed...but basically remain the same...What drove me at thirty still does in my 40's but perhaps my reasons have changed...Emotionally im better able to temper my passions...channel them...physical Im able to harness them better....direct and focus them...sexually i know now freedom without guilt but with restraint because thats part of me too. Bring on he next chapter.

I don't think my passions have really changed much over the years. After retiring from a 30-year career, I went back to my passion of youth. I definitely don't have the unharnessed energy that I did back then --Type A has turned into Type B. And I long ago learned the value of determination and hard work (thank my day job for that), thereby making it 'look' like I'm more passionate about things now. But I'm not really. I still love what I always have, still have no use for what I always did and I still have the same degree of courage for my beliefs. So other that moving a little more deliberately now, not much has really changed for me in the last half century. The passions are now as they always have been.

I've seen Martin Luther King and Mikhail Gorbachev speak, in person, and watched JFK's inaugural speech on TV ... my passion has always been to "make a difference," somewhere, sometime, in my own way and that goal will never change.

I do not think passion changes, ....the intent and interests do. As Rossal said, I believe we are born with passion.

I am passionate about trying to remember everything I need to do.... I find making lists of things to do.. using the calander to remind myself... helps me from getting too worked up about anything and I can save my energy for important things, like relaxing :)

I don't think my passions have changed since I've gotten older, I do know that I've added a few more along the way. I still love writing, music, and all my little art projects and such. Passions are what keeps life interesting and intriguing.
