In rural areas it won't be a problem, but I envisage that towns and cities will be overrun with vermin within the year.

Would be a great idea if all packaging was bio-degradable or done away with all together, but until then the idea is a non starter.

If everybody had wheelie bins and recycled I guess it would be ok but the only problem there is, by me, there wouldn't be anywhere to put a wheelie bin and, unless a regular recycle collection was done, not everyone can get to a glass, paper etc. collection point! You can not avoid rats and I think it will just add more to the problem, not less! Keep it weekly!

Edit:

"I live on my own (most of the time) so I cannot say how a family of 3 plus would cope!"

Good point there! There is Me, my Son and Daughter and we put out about 3 - 4 bags a week out. I admit some of this could be recycled if possible,as I have mentioned above, but if not, and it was every fortnight, that amount would obviously double! This means all those bags in my back garden which is well known for being an area with lots of vermin! I would hazard a guess that people will start dumping there rubbish or leaving it out the front WAY to early prior to collection. This again will lead to more problems, not only with rats but cats, dogs, foxes etc.!

I have had fortnightly household rubbish collections for over two years now and have no problens with the system. I do with the wheelie bin as I used to do with the dustbin, I give it dusting of Jayes Dustbin Powder in warm weather to keep it smelling a bit better thats all?

macforty, maybe that is a sign that you need to start recycling your waste, cut back on buying over packaged goods for example buy loose fruit and veg, buy less pre packaged meals, recycle your glass, aluminium, paper, kitchen waste, garden waste and plastic etc.

There really is no need to have bins empted every week if we all make an effort to cut back on buying so much waste.

If your fruit and veg comes from a supermarket pre packed in celophane and in a plastic tray, empty it at the checkout leaving the rubbish for the supermarket to deal with.

Soon there may be a bill come into force charging by the bag load of rubbish you have removed, so cut back now, save yourself some cash in the future.

its not a problem ...just find a leafy glade or a pleasent open green space...and dump your crap there..just like i do... maybe even put an old matress down first so the squirrels and rabbits can injure themselves on hidden debris... and if your in luck, those 2 faggots on a motorbike with a cam corder will be hiding in a badgers set banging on inainly about the foes of bending the grass with the matress in the wrong manner, when you should have employed a proffesional pikey to show you how....

Bet their partners are really pleased to hear that..

I use my neighbours bin as well as my own, as it is..

I can see the pest controllers working overtime if this happens..

Now I'm on a monthly collection for the green bin and a weekly collection for the grey bin. But they are talking about fortnightly for both. As I see it I'm going from 5 collections to 4.

My daughter who is with the same council has a bin for glass and one for paper which I don't have. I could use a glass collection to take the wine bottles way if nothing else.

And they want us to ring up for a special collection for garden waste, how much does that cost? I want a compost bin, and I want it to be free too, they can save loads of dosh by not putting stuff in land fill.

Oh and them folk who refuse to recycle. Are they the folk on benefits who don't pay council tax and don't see any reason to save any money 'cos it don't cost them, well they may change their mind if their benefits depended on it.

Waste costs, I know, I work in industry an I have a feel for how much, and it's alot.

thankfully i don't think Bournemouth will bring it in as we have fortnightly recycle but weekly rubbish BUT only a pint sized bin! as for the fortnightly rubbish collection they would have to replace all those horrid new tiny rubbish bins they have just given us
the new bins even have microchips in them GRRRRRRRRRRRR.
as for the Bin emptying (in)operatives, most round here are morons and cant even manage to check that the bin is actually empty before chucking it back on the drive/garden or anywhere else they can find rather than back where they found it!

I have just reread the OP's post and I have to say that I think, upon reflection, that it may not be the council refuse collection he had on his mind when posting.

Or maybe I've spent too long in the company of mucky minded people and his message can indeed be taken at face value.

To be honest, I'm not too bothered about rubbish being collected every fortnight instead of weekly. I suppose though a few months down the line where I have to deal with dirty nappies again, I may change my tune!!! As long as people store their rubbish correctly and not leave it on the roadside where they get split and rubbish goes everywhere, I don't see a problem with it.

As we are not allowed to start new posts, here is my opinion of bin men as of today!

I have just reversed out of my driveway and heard a big crunch! lovely, i did notice then bin men had been picking some contents up from the road that they had spilt, but obviously not everything.
Oh yes a lovely smashed jar of apple sauce..... not mine either!, checked tyre seemed ok, got into town, yep flat tyre. £4 for carpark till 6pm wen my ex can change tyre for me ( i am a proper usless so and so with cars). £1.20 for bus home.

Just so happens i have been chatting to one of my bin men online from the dating site, cant wait to have a chat with him, think he owes me a big glass of dry white wine!

Dont even get me going on this!

Ours have always come every 2 weeks, and they only empty the wheelie bin and dont bother to pick up the one extra bag you've left out. **stards.

Ohhh careful you don't get fined for your extra bag like the lad that got fined for his wheelie bin being too full, he even got a criminal record for it!

When I lived on the land my bin hardly ever got emptied, maybe once a month if I was lucky.

I just burn most of my rubbish now or recycle it as there are no bin men where my home is!

I do think we could recycle more though it's just that the governemnt go a half arsed way about things. I think they realy should speak to real people when decision making.

Fortnightly collection is a right nuisance

1) If youre a forgetful old sod like me and dont leave the bin out (or but the blue one out on black bin day) youre really screwed.
2) Its based on the assumption that everyone is always going to be home on bin day (or the night before). In the real world this is not always the case as a lot of people work strange hours or need to be away on work/business/family reasons etc.

Im fairly lucky in that the council yard is nearby and I can take my rubbish there myself if necessary but not eveyone has this facility (or indeed the use of a car)

Where I live they have introduced "chip and bin" where your wheelie bins have a small chip in them and can be weighed on disposal. So in the future "in theory" you can be charged just for what you dump and not the standard price for every house.

I believe they do this sort of thing in Germany already.

However, it would not be good here as the bin men seem to be a bit thick and have never once yet given me my own bin back again. I always get one of the neighbours ones.

Some friends in Southam were told to freeze their meat remains as collections were going to be fortnightly, all seems a little strange don't we get charged enough taxes to cover things as they are?

My local Council gives me a wheelie bin for waste, a brown box for food stuffs like meats etc and an orange bag for mags/ papers, I have alot of waste but my bin does not overfill as i use the correct bin/ bags for the recycling.

I'd have no problems with the council only collecting our black bin every two weeks if they made it easier to recycle! We used to have a blue box for recycling glass, tin etc.. but they got rid of that when they brought the blue bin out for paper/card... so whilst we can recycle paper and card easy, its a lot more faffing around recycling bottles etc!

Ive had mine serviced fortnightly for about 2 years now........

It does make you think more carefully abouty re-cycling which Im quite good at now, I also have a compost bin which is great...

I shred all my paper and put it in the compost bin as well as all the usual stuff!

My bins usually nearly full - only find it a pain if Ive had a clean out session then I need to trip to the tip!!

We have had fortnightly collections for about three years now. Three wheelie bins, black for general, green for recycling and brown for Garden waste. Black collected one week, green and brown the next.

We have no back entries to our houses and no front gardens so the result has been loads of bins permanently on the pavement.

Also A horrendous rat problem. I have lived here 25 years and saw two rats in the first 22 and in the last three have seen hundreds including in my house. It is so bad we have been told to get rid of any compost heaps etc. as these attract them.

I could cope with all of this but by far the worst thing of all is that the council deny the two are connected! Our increasing rat problem over the last three years has absolutely nothing to do with the change in rubbish collection.! Honestly do they really think we came down in the last shower or what!

I think it is a blaitant P*ss take!! After a wk our communal bin room is already full to the brim... and it reeks. I think a fortnightly collection will encourage vermin and disease. We pay tax on this tax on that... council tax and now chats about us being charged for rubbish collection as well as only collecting one a fortnight. Typical fat cats getting fatter it just makes me question do these ppl live in the real world or indeed give a sh*t about what others have to go through when they're living in a nice house with maids and ppl to take their rubbish out and stuff....

Random thought.... I wonder if we'll ever see 2 wks rubbish outside of 10 Downing Street haha xjx
