I remember reading something from the UCL about how our habits of washing our hands numerous times a day with soaps actually have an adverse effect, and promotes harmful bacteria growth. It was suggested we use yogurt to wash our hands, since bacterias tend to not grow on top of other bacterias.

But if it's a well used restroom, about 50% of the time, there's SOME guy in there doing his thing, and you have to tolerate the smells and sounds that he's making with a complete lack of shame.

Oh my god!!! good thing I wasn't eating. That is gross!!!

This is like the horror movie that never ends...yet I keep having to watch it to see what will happen next

See there are some benefits to being hard of hearing. But I am also a fan of piped in muzak or whatever in the bathroom.

I loved the comedian who on this topic said: "Ladies, what is the problem? I wash my winky once in the morning so I don't have to wash my hands the rest of the day. " delivered in that dry brittish way.

What bothers me more is using the door handle on the way out. Why can't it be pushed to get out and pull to get in?

And you women should talk. The pretzels may have male urine but the average female purse has E Coli which only comes from poop. I have not handled a woman's purse since I learned that statistic.

Oh, I have no illusions about women. I've seen women leave the stall and head straight out the door. But I assumed most people, men or women, use public washrooms for peeing (except for a rare emergency). God, I can't believe I'm discussing this on a dating site. I pee often (I drink a LOT of liquids). But surely most of us have a healthy once-a-day constitutional that's taken care of in the comfort of our own homes. And then wash our hands!

This is some crazy female logic! If she's already got the water running, does it take that much more effort to actually wash her hands?

LMFAO, what logic, ..thats retarded, ok moving to the topic at "hand"

From what i witness on a daily basis, many guys do not wash their hands.
I can also prove at any given time that the womens restroom is ALWAYS messier than the mens room, with paper towels everywhere, toilet paper everywhere,(sometimes even worse than that, but i'm not going there) maybe they don't wash their hands as much either..or maybe they do because the trash can fills up 10x faster in the ladies room.

I could see how this could happen. If a woman had to hang her purse up in the stall. Some women use those hooks to open the doors after they go to the bathroom.

Yes...& I get really ticked if the restroom doesn't have sanitary means to do so. A few managers have been politely called & had this pointed out.

If I can't do so, chances are the kitchen staff can't either!

I was in the rest room in Jamaica and this guy watched me pee (well he wasnt watching closely!) and then wash my hands and he said 'thats wierd' and i said why and he said you should wash your hands first - not after. well that wasnt how i was raised but then he said:
think about it.. you showered this morning, right? (yes) and you were all clean, right? (yes) and you put on clean underwear, right? (yes) so you walk around touching things and you hands get dirty but your****is in those clean boxers - you come in, unbutton, grab your clean****with your dirty hands, pee and then go wash your hands. you should wash the dirty hands before holding your clean**** hhhmmmmm

in fact, I have heard that some European cultures do it that way

NB I still wash after

Depends on the place... if its an open door washroom with auto flush urinals then there is no real NEED to wash your hands (I dont pee on my hands). The only thing that actually gets touched is my zipper and my jeans.

Most of the time, mens rooms are poorly maintained and not clean. Washing your hands in some of these places would actually mean you are more dirty than had you not touched anything.

Even if I did grab my pecker, its probably the cleanest thing in there anyway LOL

Obviously a number 2 would require a hand washing though!

Use paper towel or just move your hands in the air whatever is the English word for that ("se secouer les mains" as we say in French).

I guess you mean "shake your hands"...heheheh.
EWW. Some of these posts are complete horror stories. Lucky for me I had no food in my stomach that could come back up to haunt me.

I can't seem to do my business in a public washroom, unless I really need to go. Most likely because I have been scarred by the conditions some public washroom have been in. Women's washroom may get dirty faster, but the smells that come out of Men's washroom could kill! (I know this because I had to paint inside a men's washroom during the summer) I'm shivering just to think about it... ick.

This is the best worst thread someone could talk about in a dating site. Hahahah

The guys don't wipe their ass, so maybe they figure they don't need to wash their hands.

Maybe they already have intestinal parasites and don't mind more to keep the ones they have company.

I ALWAYS wash my hands after washroom use. I had a friend in high school who tried to "peer pressure" me into not washing my hands. If we used the washroom together she never washed her hands and didn't want to wait for me to wash mine and would be like "Why are you washing your hands? Did you pee on them?" Jeez... no... but maybe someone else pee'd on thier hands and flushed the toilet and then i touched the toilet flusher thing too and now I don't have my pee on my hands, but someone elses and thats just nasty!

Obviously I would rather do my business at home... but sometimes you get stuck in public where a) you gotta go crap in a public bathroom or else b) shit yourself. Since I am not a psycho astronaut chick, I choose option b hehe.

You gotta admit though... the accoustics are great in public bathrooms! LOL Sometimes its hard not to laugh out loud.

I always wash my hands unless the sink is so disgusting that I think turning it off will leave my hands dirtier then not washing at all. Usually only places like gas station bathrooms are that bad though.

This is why girls go to the bathroom in pairs...

They don't do it at someone's home so one could only speculate that when at a party or bar they know that they are probably being stared at by the opposite sex and either are doing the "peacock" or are just plain shy.

Here's a light joke that cracked me up and could well explain why women go to the washroom together:

When you have to visit a public bathroom, you usually find a line of women, so you smile politely and take your place. Once it's your turn, you check for feet under the stall doors. Every stall is occupied. Finally, a door opens and you dash in, nearly knocking down the woman leaving the stall.

You get in to find the door won't latch. It doesn't matter, the wait has been so long you are about to wet your pants! The dispenser for the modern "seat covers" (invented by someone's Mom, no doubt) is handy, but empty.

You would hang your purse on the door hook, if there was one, but there isn't - so you carefully, but quickly drape it around your neck, (Mom would turn over in her grave if you put it on the FLOOR!), yank down your pants, and assume "The Stance."

In this position your thigh muscles begin to shake. You'd love to sit down, but you certainly hadn't taken time to wipe the seat or lay toilet paper on it, so you hold "The Stance."

To take your mind off your trembling thighs, you reach for what you discover to be the empty toilet paper dispenser. In your mind, you can hear your mother's voice saying, "Honey, if you had tried to clean the seat, you would have KNOWN there was no toilet paper!" Your thighs shake more.

You remember the tiny tissue that you blew your nose on yesterday - the one that's still in your purse. (Oh yeah, the purse around your neck, that now, you have to hold up trying not to strangle yourself at the same time). That would have to do. You crumple it in the puffiest way possible.. It's still smaller than your thumbnail .

Someone pushes your door open because the latch doesn't work. The door hits your purse, which is hanging around your neck in front of your chest, and you and your purse topple backward against the tank of the toilet. "Occupied!" you scream, as you reach for the door, dropping your precious, tiny, crumpled tissue in a puddle on the floor, lose your footing altogether, and slide down directly onto the TOILET SEAT. It is wet of course. You bolt up, knowing all too well that it's too late.

Your bare bottom has made contact with every imaginable germ and life form on the uncovered seat because YOU never laid down toilet paper - not that there was any, even if you had taken time to try. You know that your mother would be utterly appalled if she knew, because, you're certain her bare bottom never touched a public toilet seat because, frankly, dear, "You just don't KNOW what kind of diseases you could get."

By this time, the automatic sensor on the back of the toilet is so confused that it flushes, propelling a stream of water like a fire hose against the inside of the bowl that sprays a fine mist of water that covers your butt and runs down your legs and into your shoes. The flush somehow sucks everything down with such force that you grab onto the empty toilet paper dispenser for fear of being dragged in too. At this point you give up. You're soaked by the spewing water and the wet toilet seat. You're exhausted. You try to wipe with a gum wrapper you found in your pocket and then slink out inconspicuously to the sinks.

You can't figure out how to operate the faucets with the automatic sensors, so you wipe your hands with spit and a dry paper towel and walk past the line of women, still waiting. You are no longer able to smile politely to them. A kind soul at the very end of the line points out a piece of toilet paper trailing from your shoe. (Where was that when you NEEDED it??) You yank the paper from your shoe, plunk it in the woman's hand and tell her warmly, "Here, you just might need this." As you exit, you spot your boyfriend, who has long since entered, used and left the men's restroom.

Annoyed, he asks, "What took you so long, and why is your purse hanging around your neck?"

This is dedicated to women everywhere who deal with a public restrooms (rest??? you've got to be kidding!!). It finally explains to the men what really does take us so long. It also answers their other commonly asked questions about why women go to the restroom in pairs. It's so the other gal can hold the door, hang onto your purse and hand you Kleenex under the door!

I wash my hands every time. Its dirty and unhygenic not to.

As for the taps being dirty, i wash them with a bit of hot water at hime every night, keeps them clean and free of germs.

It's not the pooping, peeing, farting, scratching ... it's the NOT washing! There's nothing disgusting about bodily functions.

I'm still quite shocked that people do much more than pee in public washrooms, though. Unless I'm sick, I go once a day and it's inevitably at home in the morning. I've also only "lived" with three men - my father, my husband, and a male roommate who lived with my husband and me for a few years. During that time, the guys made such a production of it - "Hey, if you need to use the can, do it now, 'cause I'm going to be in there for a while" - I assumed most men were the same. They liked to be comfortable and take their time. A public washroom doesn't seem like the right setting for that.
