My heart goes out to you - it is so difficult to see our children suffer. And the hidden disorders are the worst, because people are so quick to judge.
The only advice I can give is that sometimes it can require trying different medications. I know it has taken my son a few years to finally get on the right meds -and now his life is so much better.

| info on bipolar disorder Posted: 4/10/2005 10:04:36 AM | | Thanks for that - unfortunately here the doctors are loathe to prescribe anything other than prozac for under 18's and therapy is hard to come by and expensive.Counselling helps but it is sometimes hard to see exactly how - its just worse if she doesn't go! | |

| info on bipolar disorder Posted: 4/10/2005 5:29:24 PM | | I had mentioned before that my ex has bi-polar disorder, and that's what ended our marriage. I told her to go to a doctor to get diagnosed 5 years before our marriage ended, but she would not. Into the fifth year of her now defunked second marriage she finally got diagnosed with severe bi-polar. If she had just listened to me ten years earlier she could have received the needed help. I was worried about my daughter (who I've raised alone for the last eleven years) so I have monitored her for the last three years. This year I became positive she has it too (it runs-recorded medically- four generations back on her mothers side including and up to psychosis), but since she left last month durring one of her swings....how do you convince someone that young, eighteen, that they need to go for a formal diagnosis and treatment? I might as well pull my own teeth instead..... | |

| info on bipolar disorder Posted: 4/23/2005 3:50:39 PM | I am finally going to the doctor next week ... My travelling didn't allow me to go before.
I got a contact, through a doctor referred by the only friend I have on this side of the ocean that I could ask this question.
Disapointment is already big as the phone message was "I'm sorry but I am a family teraphy specialist. I'll give you a name of a good doctor and she will give you medicine" ...
Do we actually get to talk ????
I am flying to Europe next week as well, and go there to see my old shrink ...
I have no problem accepting medicine, but never as the one and only solution ...

| ill informed Posted: 4/23/2005 5:59:27 PM | I know all about what your saying. And along with the Bi-Polar usually comes the thing called Panic Disorder or anxiety to where you dont feel you belong anywhere socially. Most of this thing I have inherited comes from my dads side of the family also. As for myself, there was a long time that I self medicated with alcohol which for some reason, works wonders except when it wears off, it leaves you in such a low depression or you wake up to panic attacks that you could almost take your own life. The panic attacks are the worst for me. One little secret tho,,,when you seek treatment from a Dr., it does wonders. I havent had a drink since June of 95 and feel great. There is one thing to mention. The two little pills I take daily are far better than than depression or a hangover with panic attacks. And i have accomplished more in the last 10 years than in all the days I wasted trying to drink this disease away. One other note is, why bi-polar people always seem to be talented. I play piano and keyboard by ear, having taken no lessons to speak of. I was forced to take lessons for 6 months at age 12 but hated it and made it unbearable for the teacher. We both agreed that I should continue to play the way I already knew how to play. | |

| info on bipolar disorder Posted: 4/23/2008 4:26:53 PM | | As I stated elsewhere alot of people are convinced these days by medical companies of having stuff like A.D.D., being bi-polar, etc... just to sell medicine. By medical terms pretty much all children and other people can be classified as having A.D.D. Yet there are some true genuine cases of such in which you can medicate all you want and never truly "fix" it. It's like putting a bandaid on a knee scrapped from falling off a bike. Yeah it takes care of the immediate problem, yet it will continue if the kid doesn't learn how to properly ride the bike so it doesn't happen in the future. Many medical professions, though not all, have a problem acknowledging there is more involved in such than just physical body. There is the soul which is a whole other part of you that is just a part of you as anything else reguardless if you can "see" it or not. Where you think emotions come from? Well rather than get in some big religious/atheist debate on the existence of the soul, just indulge me and go with it for a sec. Ok so you have stuff that the physical part of you wants to do and stuff that your spiritual side wants to do. Often people just pay attention to what's in their head and ignore what's in their hearts... often from beliefs of "can't" "impossible" "unworthy" etc. to do so. So a person that keeps trying to rationalize everything, only following one part of yourself and ignoring what your soul wants to do has effects that build up. The truth of what their soul wants to experience cannot will not be ignored forever. Like all truth, no matter how fast or far you run, it will always catch up to you and could have severe effects if you ignore it long enough. That's basically what causes "bi-polar" people. Their soul is trying to speak out with one thing they know in their heart, and their mind is trying to rationalize why not to follow such. Usually they grow up with teachings their parents, schools, relgions, etc. teach them to believe that they cannot follow it for whatever reason. The fastest and only true remedy to stop all of it is to quit listening to what the mind has to say about your path in life and listen to your heart. Your soul knows exactly where you need to go to accomplish those dreams that truly will make you happy in life. So set forth an intention of a path you want to take, like for instance if there is a person you truly desire to be with and be truly happy, and feel what you know about it. If you feel joy, then follow that path... if you feel anything negative like fear, then the path won't help and only make the road that much longer to get there. There are those who are actually willing to listen to advice and try it out, and there are those who will ridicule advice as such until they realize that doing it the "hard way" is taking alot longer than they would have liked. So it's all a question of how long you want to take to get to where you want to go in life... | |

| info on bipolar disorder Posted: 12/26/2008 9:37:14 AM | It would be nice if the kicks in my azz would have made a difference. The symptoms as described in the Medical Journal for Psychiatric Medicine are dead on for me. With our going into detail, realizing that my symptoms started as a young adult and not diagnosed until my late 40's. medication has curbed my cycling to manageable degree. The hard part is finding a partner that accepts this diagnoses at all. Most 'run for the hills' at the mention of the word bipolar. You would surely be surprised at how many bipolar people you have in your life right now, but with your attitude toward any mental illness they would stay away from you like the league Mental illness IS a disorder. Just ask some of following who have also been diagnose with this disorder and maybe even email them for their response: # Art Buchwald - writer, humorist # Tim Burton - movie director #****Cavett - writer, TV personality # Rosemary Clooney - singer # Francis Ford Coppola - movie director # Ray Davies - musician # Eric Douglas - actor # Patty Duke - actress # Carrie Fisher - actress # Axl Rose - musician # Gordon Sumner (Sting) - musician # Lili Taylor - actress # Jean-Claude Van Damme - actor #Buzz Aldrin - US astronaut | |

| info on bipolar disorder Posted: 1/18/2009 10:49:35 PM | yna6, you are right when you say you DONT KNOW about this stuff. you dont even know what you are talking about! psychological disorders occur because of a chemical imbalance in your brain. its not something you can control, its NOT mind over matter.... and those are the very distinguishing and frustrating characteristics of these mental disorders. it is very ignorant to say "just forget the drugs" because the drugs are just regulating the imbalanced chemicals in your brain that cause the disorder. im not saying that meds are for everyone but i will say that they honestly saved my life. so next time, maybe you shouldnt criticize something that you dont even know anything about. | |

| ^^^ That Has to be....The Biggest Load of Bollox I have ever read in my life Posted: 1/22/2009 5:18:34 PM | I must say, you have made perhaps THE most INSPIRING UPLIFTING contribution to this forum that I have ever seen.
It is a pity that you will probably be single for the rest of your life because of your condition. I feel the same way about my condition (although my psychotherapist disagrees).
You have a daughter as well. I always wanted to find a partner and maybe have kids. Always wondered why it wasn't happening, and other people's lives seemed better. I wasn't diagnosed bipolar til I was 31.
Ah well, just take each day as it comes...

Hello, I am Mark (good 2 cu) ....
I just wanted to say that there are a great deal of scare tactics out there, as well as misinformation, exaggeration. Some poor behavior that bipolar is related to can be directly attributed to upbringing, personality, and moral traits....the same that can related to so-called "normal" people. I wouldn't go into the bipolar illness until a few dates, let someone get to know you before you tell them. There are some forums out there, but use caution. Many people will give you bad advice or just bring you down. Good luck in all you do...write if you like, our backgrounds are very similar.

| info on bipolar disorder Posted: 1/28/2009 12:55:07 PM | | I have had bi-polar illness for over 20yrs if you take your medication and don,t medicate your own self with alcohol or drugs ,chances are you have a good chance of getting better and cope with life,s issues in a more positive way . Thier will be times of depression but not as bad as if your bring it on your self ,,so is their hope ,yes, yes, ,I still have trouble in relationships ,,but i hang on to hope, hope, hope, people who believe that bi-polar illness is not devestating and real ,,, are very mentally ill and self absorbed with thier own ignorance. divine 5 :modhammer: | |

| info on bipolar disorder Posted: 1/28/2009 11:44:14 PM | I also have Bipolar and 5 years college in psy/clinical psy, so I think I have an unique perspective.
There are two types of Bipolar. I -severe and II- basically mild. So the people that say they can do it without meds, probably can. They probably have Bipolar II. As for us with Bipolar I, it can be a death sentence, if we don't take meds. Not to mention the reckess and inconsequential choices in mania destroying our and our family's lives.
As for the ones that say tough love and a kick in the right direction will get a biploar person well. I just shake my head. It's like telling someone with cancer to "get over it".
I tried to take the natural approach in 2006. I stopped meds and counseling. I just wanted to be me, naturally. Good in theory, but not so good in reality. I did crazy things for about 7 months or so, lost 75 lbs, and became more and more disfunctional, until I was hospitalized against my will. A nightmare experience!
Today, well, I have gained all the weight back, being on the meds again. I, now, take my meds religiously and have no mood swings or crazy thoughts. I function well now. The happiest I have ever been (without being manic ).
