Landscape is beautiful. Women are pretty. That is just a personal distinction I make.

please don't ever tell a woman the landscape is beautiful and you are just pretty. You will lose her quicker than you can get her. That's like a girl telling a guy a horse has a big one your's is okay.

This kind of reminds me of that dating manual for women to get married, "The Rules". It's so funny because in that book, women are instructed to do the same (except in reverse, to guys) as what this poster has recommended to guys. I can't help but kind of chuckle at this because if we had a world where both men and women were pulling these "one up" games on each other, I think we'd see a lot more single people who will never get together with anyone, than we do today! Both guys and girls are hoping to "score" (whatever that means to you) with the opposite sex, and in the end no one would, because they're expecting that no one else is playing their game.. Too funny!

i think what's too funny is that the dude who said that considered playing a head game like that as him being 'honest', hahahaha

The difference is very slight.
I might use either term to refer to a girl I find attractive.
"Beautiful" conveys a sense of hopelessness--like, as in I'm so smitten I can't stop thinking about you, but I can't approach you. Maybe because you are out of my league for some reason, like social class or something.
"Pretty" means you are physically attractive, but a real person I might actually ask out.

Women can be beautiful but mean.
But I would never call a girl "pretty" unless I thought she was nice, as well as attractive.

So, "pretty" is really the higher compliment--coming from me, anyhow.

i agree 100% with the guy who advocates never commenting a woman (unless she has earned it by not being a lecherous slut for at least a few months).

My favorite is when some skinny little hostess at works starts complaining to guys how she is getting fat. OMG please I almost puke when I hear the guys go, "Oh no way baby, you look great!"

Congrats chump, you did nothing but fill her head with more air.

Yes, I agree totally. It is quite in line with my previous posting; pretty is attractive and sexy. Landscape is beautiful. I don't consider her to be all that sexy, but as part of the landscape, she is quite beautiful.

so guys - how is "cute" different from "pretty" from "beautiful" ?????

Hmm, I hadn't considered "cute" in comparison with "pretty" and "beautiful". But I think "cute" is even sexier than "pretty". The word itself has a highly erotic ring to it, at least for me.

Wow, I couldn't have said it better myself:

Angelina Jolie - beautiful, but not sexy
Charlize Theron - beautiful with a smidgen of cute, somewhat sexy
Meg Ryan - cute with a smidgen of beautiful, very sexy

I don't. I tell her she is pretty or cute, but I rarely have need to mention anything about landscape or its beauty. Conversation of that nature usually occurs later in the relationship, if it lasts that long.

I very rarely used the word beautiful... but for the other two I tend to use 'pretty' if I think she's quite attractive but not really my type, and 'cute' if I *am* into her.

Pretty is about looks. Beauty is tricker because many guys will use the word when they should say pretty instead. Beautiful can be more flattering than pretty. The thing about beauty is that we tend to think of inner beauty too. Personally, a pretty woman is easy to look at, but a beautiful woman is someone I'd like to talk to and be around.

I know i'm a girl but I want to put my 2 cents in here.....

I really don't know the difference between pretty or beautiful either... but if i'm refered to as either one I take it as a compliment.
I don't need to be complimented constantly and always being told i'm pretty/beautiful from a man i'm dating. It's something I would rather in many ways feel from him... actions speak louder than words.
Yes, I do enjoy it when a gentlemen compliments me I just don't need the constant reassurance if he shows me how he feels in so many other ways.
EVERYONE enjoys having someone tell them they are attractive, I guess for some it really depends on what the choice of words are.

BUT I have dated someone who had no problems telling me I was hot, beautiful, cute, pretty... after a while he stopped saying it. It hurt!! It reached a point where I actually DID feel I needed that reassurance from him that he was still attracted to me.
A while after we broke up I finally just asked him what was up with that... if maybe he had lost his attraction to me. He told me he assumed I just knew he thought I was beautiful. I then started thinking back to when we were together... he did show in many ways that he was attracted to me still by his actions. I guess just not actually hearing the words for a while brought out an insecurity in me.

Constantly being told you are attractive just becomes words and in many ways does lose it's meaning... not being told enough that you are attractive can actually damage a persons self esteem in so many ways.
When you compliment someone... MEAN IT!! Don't throw compliments around like they are just a part of a normal conversation... but also at the same time never fail to remind the person you are with that you find them attractive.
Know the difference between taking it overboard and being sincere.

AwP: so what is the difference to you anyway - what style means "pretty" and how is it different from "beautiful" to you ?

Is "pretty" more girlish than "beautiful" then ?

say, someone like Angelina Jolie, to me, she is definitely "beautiful", but not "pretty" - do you guys agree ??????

Some other guys explained it pretty well already, but since you asked me specifically I'll give my take on it. There aren't rules written in stone on which catagory a woman falls into for me, so much as indicators. Sometimes a woman will fit the indicators of one catagory while actually falling in another for some reason (Allison Hannigan fits the "pretty" archtype, but to me she comes across as cute), I think personality can often tip the balance.

Cute: Meg Ryan was a good example. Some indicators are shorter hair or pigtails, glasses, rounder face, odd fashion sense, shorter height, petite build, playful personality. The "geeky girl" is an example of this archtype.

Pretty: Julia Roberts of course, dur. Pretty indicators are longer straight hair or a ponytail, narrower face, "normal" fashion, medium height and build, down to earth personality. The "girl next door" fits this archtype.

Beautiful: Angelina Jolie is the poster girl for beautiful these days. Long "styled" hair, more triangular face, fancier clothing (I'm most likely to have beautiful come out as my natural choice when they're all gussied up), aloof personality. The "fashion model" is this archtype.

While alot of guys catagorize similarly to my way, don't take my indicators as universal, all guys have their own way.

WOW, thanks guys -- you have all been very helpful. You do have a developed sense of these words and they are definitely not being used randomly or carelessly. Each of these words have a very different meaning for each of you. Very interesting.

Cute means attractive but with a baby face. You know, the sort of girl who gets carded for cigarettes when she's 28.

Cbaumann, you hit the nail right on the head.....these psychotic head cases always needing to be reassured that they haven't turned into rosseane barr in last five minutes . Its straight nonsense. Though this just has to do with dating and come on's and things like that. If you are in a serious relationship or marriage....that's a little different. But, me, I don't want to be in a serious relationship with a woman I have to constantly reassure about her appearance. Its extremely shallow and it perpetuates a shallow lifestyle. I don't want a woman that would create a thread just like this one ( no offense mimi) Just be glad you got a compliment and as someone else put it, stop turning it into a seinfeld episode.........and if this is a seinfeld episode, I guess I'm cramer since he always says it like it is.... and gets really hot women at the same time....

I agree with crazyrocker's views so far. I don't really care what the guys said about my appearance. I don't find those words like "pretty/cute/beautiful......" that important.

Ewww... Kramer! It's like this guy just made my point without me having to say a thing! If the kind of guys who withold compliments for "power" reasons are basically like Kramer, I'm glad those are the NOT the guys I'm attracted to, lol. I'm pretty sure a character like Kramer (if he existed in real life) is not interested in anything of substance anytime soon.. In fact he acts just like the "lechorous sluts" this guy has an objection to (but of course it's ok for guys to act like this right? NOT, lol). Funny to watch on a TV show maybe, nothing but a nightmare to deal with in real life (that's part of what makes it funny on TV in fact!).

Hey, the original question was simply just what these words mean to you guys when you say them. I think Mr. Crazy's response simply shows his insecurity...he is reading way too much into the question and bringing his own shortcomings and baggage into the discussion -- that's all. No one is suggesting a woman asks for or needs to hear compliments etc etc... all I asked was , what do these words mean to you guys .

I just thought it would be interesting to hear from the guys. The majority of the answers were fun , informative and interesting -- let's just keep it that way.

Hi everyone, my first post and I believe I have a few words about this subject. My take on the difference between these words is this.
Beautiful: Reserved for one of two Occasions, super model material or a woman who is way out of my league. Or a woman I fallen for or have deep feelings for.

Pretty: More of an overall description of a woman who is attractive. This may include aesthetic or personality traits or any combination of the two. This is the kind of woman I would tend to think most would like to be, as beautiful is more unattainable or less likely to be approached because men would be intimidated by her.

Cute: Reserved more for young women or young looking features.

She’s Hot: A woman that immediately evokes strong sexual desire and can be either beautiful or pretty and maybe even sluttish.

She’s nice: Generally reserved for a friend who is setting you up on a blind date and doesn’t want to let the cat out of the bag.

Slut: can be pretty or cute but not beautiful and usually implies that you think she will sleep with any major football team.

She’s Handsome: She may just have had a sex change or bisexual or both. Maybe menopausal.

Babe: Really hot woman with some cute features, usually young. Sometimes means she is unattainable because she is married or has a boyfriend.

Nymph: What she becomes when you have had sex with her non-stop for a week and she can’t get enough. Danger of becoming a slut.

MILF: Women with kids you would like to have sex with.

This is my take, hope you like, lol
