A woman being pretty is just that, she is pretty. She is not beautiful, she is pretty ~ quite a few knotches below beautiful status.

A woman being beautiful is just that, she is beautiful.
I do not mean to come off as rude, but pretty is one thing and being beautiful is quite another.

Let me explain.
If a man tells you that you are "cute" (which is probably the worst thing you can tell a woman.) Unless she is 25 or under. ~ Please follow me before you get upset..
It is like this, girls are "cute" kittens are "cute" ~ A grown woman should not referred to as being "cute". (Cute is a 4 letter word). Cute is for puppies, not women over the age of 30.

Another one that I use when I don't find a woman pretty or beautiful is the word "attractive" attractive in my eyes means that I am basically saying to you that you are making the most of what you have to work with but you do not fit the requirements of being deemed as "beautiful" or even "pretty" for that matter.

Not all women do, so don't take it to heart. Beautiful women are not easy to come by.

You ladies have your definitions of men and their physical apperances as well, do you not? So I know that you can understand what I am saying.

Please take no offense, I am just answering the question in my personal opinion.

As far as physical appearance goes, I'd agree with most everyone else that beautiful>pretty>cute.

Sexy, however, is a whole different game. I'd much rather have a cute, sexy woman than a beautiful ice queen.

Common sense generic answer for woman out there; Both of those are words used as compliments, that when used to describe a person (in layman's terms) it means "I like how you look!" They do not have a value or scale attached to either them. Instead try to read into the enthusiasm of the way the words were delivered to gauge your friend's sincerity and level of attraction.

Pretty >=< Beautiful

To the gentleman that states beautiful> pretty> cute.
No. That is why each word has its own definition.

See below:
Pretty: pleasing to the eye, esp. without grandeur.

Beautiful: having beauty; having qualities that give great pleasure or satisfaction to see, hear, think about, etc.; delighting the senses or mind.

Cute: attractive, esp. in a dainty way; pleasingly pretty: a cute child; a cute little apartment.. Examples given, a CUTE child, a CUTE little apartment. (Nothing about a woman)

Sexy: excitingly appealing; glamorous
------
Now, the dictionary answered your question.
So, tell me by these definitions how does cute = sexy? It does not.
Not to mention the fact that beautiful goes hand in hand with sexy as by the definitions given, nowhere in those definitions does the dictionary define beautiful as being an "Ice Queen" maybe in your experience. Don't generalize.

Just my opinion again. Oh, and that of the dictionary.

What a strange thing to worry about how high a compliment rates.

no, no, no its not that we "worry" about it, or how it rates with other compliments, nor are we obsessed with fishing for compliments etc.etc. None of that at all. Not at all !!

I had noticed some guys seemed to be quite selective in their choice of these words - that for some of you, you seem to have given some thought to which word you would use . So I just posed the question , to see if these words all mean the same to you guys, or not.

Based on the responses so far, it would appear that you guys use these words to reflect how you feel about a woman.

So no, this is not about how a girl feels "insecure" about receiving compliments ( most guys missed the point), this question is to find out about YOU GUYS, what you think etc. I think the responses have been telling, in a fun light-hearted sort of way - lol.
( Lighten up, some of you guys out there -- women are not "insecure", stop it ! lol )

Yup, that's true for this fish.

As to the "women not being insecure" thing - there might be a few who aren't.

hahaha - oh come on now, women are not insecure . I think some girls might play it up a bit sometimes ( like the dumb blonde thing) - mostly as a game with guys, if you ask me ...women are actually quite secure about who they are and what they want.

By the way, is there an equivalent to these words for women to use on guys ? let's see,
1. yea, you look okay
2. yea, you look good
3. you look great today
4. you look gorgeous
5. wow !
6. smile, silent and be in awe...

lol...

sounds like u score alot...probaly because not one woman with a bit of sense would stay with u and the rest find out to late..come on u cant think that by giving a woman a compliment she gets a big ego,if she does she already had a big head.

OMG I feel so violated! I've been toyed with! Manipulated into being extra-sensitive. Boonswoggled into catering to her insecurities! I feel so foolish...

Do women really do that?

OT: What about the ol' "that looks nice on you" comment. I never could figure that one out. Does that mean she likes my shirt or that the shirt wouldn't look as nice on anyone else?

I think for some men, pretty and beautiful are synomymous. For me personally, I don't use beautiful often. When I say a girl is beautiful, she's usually drop-dead gorgeous. I use pretty to describe girls I find attractive who aren't drop-dead gorgeous.
I think I use cute like the poster says to describe kittens or small children. When I say a girl is cute, it's usually the type who have a youthful innocence to the way they look.
I think for the majority it's beautiful, pretty, cute. in decreasing order of attractiveness.

Wow, this is a hilarious thread. But very enlightening.

I mean I think speaks for itself that the hierarchy of appearance go from cute, pretty to beautiful.

However, that being said...in my current life stage, I would not have a longterm relationship with a man who did not find me to be beautiful, hot, and sexy.

He would not have to say it on the first date...in fact not even on the second...but he would have to say it before things got serious. Just because I know there are many men out there that would appreciate the effort I put into my appearance...it would feel like I am trying to impress someone who was not attracted to me.

Keep that in mind all you guys that think that beautiful women must be called beautiful a lot and should not be called such ever just to set you apart.

Also keep in mind, not all beautiful women grew up beautiful...some are late bloomers. Do not assume they have been called beautiful all their life...perhaps they just started hearing it themselves, so it may just set you apart from the rest of the men they have ever been with.

If a man never complimented his SO on her appearance, I could see why she would let herself go...obviously it isn't important to him Bring on the Beautiful!!!

My actual take on this is...and this is from a guy who doesn't much care for the "artificial" looking women...if I meet a woman who really cute, then she is beautiful in my eyes. Take a cute little gal in sweats and a ponytail sitting there watching a good movie...and a gal in a short skirt and 3" high heels parading herself down broadway...the gal with the ponytail IS the beautiful one in my book.

Pretty and Gorgeous are physical designations

Cute is an attitude

Beauty has NOTHING to do with the Physical...............it eminates from ones soul, Beauty is one of those elusive non tangibles we search for............Like the meaning of life.

These is no such thing as a beautiful Ice Queen

Pretty you usually relates to facial features, whereas beautiful relates to the healthy glow on the pretty face. Thats what sets them apart.

You don't love some one because they are beautiful They are beautiful because you love them

I am kinda shocked... Pretty is all about outward looks.
Beauty, however radiates from inside someones heart.
How attractive would I be if I was 6'2 ,chisled body, six figure income
and spent my days telling you you were worthless, ugly and then physically abused you when you questioned why...
Wow
I'll stay me.

I think some of the guys get it here.

Pretty is something you make yourself up to be...a nice dress, a hairstyle, makeup etc.
Beautiful is something that is almost intangible whether you are dressed to the 9's, naked or soaked from head to toe from a rainstorm...beauty is something that is more about the perception of the person than how they look. It's almost something that radiates from a women, but I think personality is part of the equation. Cute, which is also a compliment, suggests you have a young look about you that might be somewhat timeless and age defying. I like cute women.
