i just went through this with mts.....i tried calling for 3wks to cancel my daughter's internet at my mother's since her computer went down..and she was moving home.
the 1 day i had time to sit for over 30 minutes on the phone..and got a rep..to be told..they wouldnt cancel the acct..since it was under my mother's name..but i was also registered on the acct. over the privacy act..i tore the rep a new azz big time..and was not nice after 15 minutes fighting with her,,,,,,,to demand her superviser.
omg!! i had it out with her also...when they called me a liar yet again saying i wasnt on my mother's acct...which was amazing since i been doing it for over 4mths+. the last fight i had with them was to write off 2mths on my own home acct.....since a irresponsible rep didnt cancel my acct when i requested it,. as my own computer had died a month prior. was the same day yet again..i was hooking up my daughter's internet at my mother;'s...since i had just bought her a comp.
i told the superviser exactly what i thought of her,..,and was not nice over it after 45 minutes+ on the phone...and looking at missing my bus for work. i called them at 8am or so when they opened. like give me a break!! heavy call volumes at that time,..i think not..and if so not every day since i tried at least 2 or 3 days a week for over 3wks.
i was told..would be a 30 day charge...etc.etc.trash...went to where they said thye would call my mother...and then the broad had the nerve to ask for my mother's phone#....mmm as i told her..excuse me..you are looking at the acct..you got her ph # i aint telling you what it is.,.you call her yourself!!
so i called my mom..told her what happened..and they were to call her...this broad..called her a few minutes later...and asked my mother if she wanted it disconnected...she told the woman..if my daughter said to disconnect it then do it..she is in control and on the accts.
omg!! then this so called superviser tells my mother..she will cancel it but my daughter will have access for 10 days!! mmm but she told me i would get a 30 day charge??
wth!! how can they charge you 30 days if they are cancelling after 10??? i know 1 bill that will be fought..since i told her there will be no further payments on this acct..since i had tried for almost a month to cancel as it was. not my fault they cant answer their phones in a timely manner.

| MTS or Shaw?? Posted: 4/6/2007 6:50:01 AM | | I prefer MTS mobility over almost anything else. I had Roger's for a while, but MTS are building more towers and have better service across the province. That's what I need as I travel a lot with my career and quite often have to use my phone for work. I guess if you're mostly in the city it wouldn't matter much, but I find MTS Mobility works far better in the country. | |

| MTS or Shaw?? Posted: 4/6/2007 7:46:14 AM | | I use MTS for both phone and Internet.. Being a Tech I do most of my own Troubleshooting.. I only call MTS when I cant get the net back up and running. And thats normally just to find out if there is a problem in my area.. I don't have any complaints at this time.. Speed is fine (bridged Connection) | |

| MTS or Shaw?? Posted: 4/6/2007 11:07:54 AM | I tried MTS when they were doing their blitz and enjoyed the phone number appearing on the TV. However without going into boring detail..began having problems with the TV reception being fuzzy and so began the long endless phone waits to get through to the office, then more waiting to get someone to come out. This happened I swear ...four times and suggested, that perhaps it wasn't hooked up correctly downstairs, They pooh poohed that and insisted my TV was old and this was the reason for the bad reception. (My TV was only 10 years old). Long story short.. I ended up buying a new TV only to find that the TV reception was still blurry. Finally the last technician to come up discovered that the main box was put in backwards. Have been with Shaw ever since that debacle with MTS. | |

| MTS or Shaw?? Posted: 4/6/2007 2:14:03 PM | Have MTS for everything, I refuse to try Shaw internet simply b/c I do alot of downloading and if I were to use their service they would kick me off, so its pretty pointless for me to try.
Have only had 30 mins of downtime in 2 years for Internet, never had a problem with either other service, just wish either company gave a rental HD/DVR option. i dont feel like paying 300+ dollars to see if I want to get HD. But I understand the logic behind it, people dont want to throw the money away so even if they dont like it they will subscribe to justify the purchase.
Luckily I am tech savy so I dont need to call either company unless the service drops out

| MTS or Shaw?? Posted: 4/7/2007 4:49:59 PM | | I deal with shaw all the way.. Mts are con artists that charge you for every little thing.. i have shaw for all my services.. .. Mts.. used to charge for everything.. like something like 60.00 for a jack 2.00 amonth to keep my number unlisted and 30.00 to change my number.. all of this stuff is free with shaw plus they have six calling features., unlimited long distance anywhere in NOrth america.. and i never have to wait for services.. when i got my computer, mts..told me there would be two week wait to hook up internet in my apartment.. shaw came the next day..... Interesting. .i think Mts are money grabbers.. and they deserve to lose a lot of busines.. now they have competition.. woohoo.. so they wont be able to get away with ripping people off any more... | |

| MTS or Shaw?? Posted: 4/7/2007 6:59:03 PM | We've got Shaw for Digital TV and the net and I wouldn't go anywhere else. Our internet is never ever down, and we never have problems with the cable. Except right now where channels 2-6 are fuzzy but that's something we can fix ourselves.
We have MTS for our landlines and other than them messing around with our account without permission earlier this year we haven't had any problems with them.
I'll never ever ever ever ever use them for cellular coverage again though. They played around with my account without my consent more times than I can count, and then they tried to charge me $500 to fix THEIR mistake, THEIR fault, THEIR initiating a problem. They did this to me with 2 separate contracts I had with them. When the last contract ended I gladly said "kiss my ***" and ran to Telus who I love and have never had a problem with and who have wonderful customer support.

| MTS or Shaw?? Posted: 4/29/2007 1:00:18 AM | | I have MTS for phone, t.v internet and cell phone. I like the fact I can choose what channels I want for the t.v packages. When the kids were small I had the cartoon channels now they are older I got rid of them. Also I don't have to have the many NFL or NHL channels that they have, just give me my TSN and I am happy. As far as their tech support I find them helpful whether it's for the t.v or internet. I have had to wait during peek period but not long . I won't go back to shaw. | |

I even emailed MTS to ask them a few questions " MONTHS AGO " and still no reply ........................ I'm going back to Shaw soon ..................................

| MTS or Shaw?? Posted: 4/29/2007 7:15:44 AM | I have MTS for phone, internet and (almost) basic cable. We had Shaw years ago when they were the only cable guys out there and also when cable internet was first introduced (about 97?98?) I guess I may be the odd man out, but I haven't had too much trouble with MTS. I am on the computer more hours than I am not most days (at least thorought the winter), and I can't remember the last time I wasn't connected. My cell is a rogers, but a payasyougo. I basically have it so the kid's school can get me if I am not at home. I still can't bring myself to pay that 6.95 access fee every month on a contract. :) | |

| MTS or Shaw?? Posted: 4/29/2007 8:06:07 AM | I guess that phone didn't work on MTS either...I've yet to hear from her!
Well I've been a diehard fan of Shaw for my Internet...I used them for my Internet when they first came out with the service. I switched to MTS for 6 months when they had this $19.95/month for 6 months plan....had nothing but problems. Didn't stay pass the 6 months.
Not a Rogers fan either...lol...had so many dropped calls or missed calls it was ridiculous. Their 'customer service' left something to be desired. I had called them once to find out when my contract was up cause I was gonna jump ship...so they tell me it's up in 10 months and if I want out now it'll cost me $200. So fine, I leave it as it is...when I call to cancel it when it had expired, they tell me that when I called last I had verbally 'renewed' my contract for 3 years!! They even had me signed up for unlimited text messaging on a phone that I couldn't text from!! Needless to say I'm no longer with them! MTS mobility works great for me and even when I'm out on the road I get better service than with Rogers...go figure!

| MTS or Shaw?? Posted: 4/29/2007 9:12:57 AM | I would agree with Dano on the Shaw thing. I had MTS for a year for my internet and I had nothing but problems with it. I switched over to shaw about 7 or months ago and I haven't had a problem yet.
I too have the all in one bundle, phone, internet and basic cable and I have yet to have an issue with any of them. However, if I can suggest one thing, watch your billing with Shaw carefully. They tend to screw up every now and then.

| MTS or Shaw?? Posted: 4/29/2007 9:36:39 AM | I've been running Shaw Internet for years (At least since 2000) and its pretty good as far as I'm concerned. Technically I'm at the mercy of my community as Cable should employ a shared line in the area so if a LOT of users were doing a lot with it, then I could expect some performance reduction (From what I understand of the whole DSL vs Cable debate) but I have never noticed it to be a seious issue. I do a fair bit of downloading from time to time with Bit Torrent, and as long as I don't go too crazy, Shaw is cool with bandwidth usage (60 gb per months...typically 7 GB is the size of an entire season of an hour long TV show eg the West Wing) , provided I have proper limits set for people who are uploading from me. And there is a page I can go to and check my current monthly usage. I also have Shaw cable (Old style cable...not Digital) and may upgrade to digital one day....but neither Shaw or MTS provides a pkg that is cheaper than what I currently use, or that I want (Having 50 extra channels is fine, if any of them had something I wanted to watch.)
I use MTS for Phones. My Parents use MTS TV and DSL internet....and I know others who have used MTS internet....I understand that the MTS Tech support are monkies (And not very helpful)...one friend who had it installed said that the guy who came to do the installation wasn't with MTS, but an outside company....he was helpful, but he couldn't do it all on that day as someone forgot to change someting in a box at the end of her street. The times I've needed Shaw Tech support they've been real good (Of course I admit I used to work tech support, and am tech savy so that may be a bias) and it has only been a few times.
Also my dad complains that sometimes his internet (Which is MTS DSL) seems slower than it was with Dial-up. He's the opposite of Tech savy, but its still an issue. And personally I like cable, where you fire up your computer, and you're only...where as with DSL you have to connect manually and that connection software seems twitchy (The times I've used it at my parents).
As for MTS Digital TV, that seems fine and dandy (Parents have it and like it).
Just my 2 cents. | |

I have my DSL set up to always connected. I have a router and two computers, so I am not sure if that is the only way it works, but I also didn't like having to "dial in" to DSL.

| MTS or Shaw?? Posted: 4/29/2007 7:01:22 PM | i've been with mts for 13 years now for their phone service. and just recently added internet service. i havent had any outstanding problems, the only internet ones thus far seem to have been user error or down for upgrades. i always get through to their customer service within ten minutes... but that could be because i'm a night shifter and typically call at about 3am... telephone wise, no problems. i used to have an issue every time it rained. the lines would get staticky. the more/longer the rain, the worse it got. to the point where a few times the line would be down for a few days. the last time, when i finally called it in, they had a guy out in a matter of days. and when he discovered it was an interior problem (major bucks to get fixed), he hooked me up with the linewatch insurance thing before he did any more work so that i wouldnt have to pay for the repairs myself.
i'd agree that every provider is going to have issues with their service, and some ppl will have more or less problems than others... for whatever reason. i've always been pleased with the service from mts and have no desire to switch.

| MTS or Shaw?? Posted: 4/30/2007 9:45:15 AM | I say F*@k MTS...
I got nothing but hassles from them and had to put up with their BS... I got disconnected for a $110 bill. I know people that don't get problems til their bill gets over $500... i would get a pink notice as soon as it was over a hundred. They can kiss my ass as far as I'm concerned cause I'm sticking with SHAW!

| MTS or Shaw?? Posted: 4/30/2007 10:34:18 AM | I use to use mts but expierenced to many problems so I went back to the tried and true Shaw. I use to live in Calgary and rarely had problems with them there, but I wanted to support a Manitoba company............ BOY was i disappointed with that choice.
MTS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!

| MTS or Shaw?? Posted: 4/30/2007 12:06:14 PM | | I have Shaw for everything (internet, TV and phone) and have absolutely no complaints whatsoever. I did have MTS internet for a short period and absolutely hated it. I have never had any problems when I had to contact tech support for Shaw either. Most of the people I have dealt with through Shaw have been great. | |

| MTS or Shaw?? Posted: 4/30/2007 3:39:48 PM | The only "right' answer is.... it depends. :-) If it's worth anything in terms of authority or knowledge, I consult and solve computer/technology problems for a living. Have been for 25+ years. I'm good a t what I do. A lot of those problems and the associated consulting revolves around Internet access, web sites, security, file transfers, VOIP, VPN, routers, wireless, and a host of related issues and solutions. In regard to who is the best ISP, it depends.
Cost? About the same. Yes, there are a few dollars to be saved here and there, but most ordinary consumer, small business packages are pretty much the same.
Ease of use? Shaw is slightly easier to set up -- especially with a router -- because it doesn't require a PPoE connection or login/password combo (great if a router fries or loses it's info, or the login info file gets corrupted and the user forgets their login info). But it's a pretty minor advantage. Still it's there.
Support? MTS support is next to useless -- long waits, hard to get to the right person (but remember, I don't call about the small stuff anyway). Shaw support is usually quite fast unless they have a major outage. I also like that I can leave a callback number in the Shaw queue and they get back to me. That way I can get on with something else. I find knowledge levels to be about equal -- though MTS seems to have a lot of people that insist on walking through every possible solution in the book in complete disregard for the the fact that you've told them you've already done all the basic stuff. The Shaw techs tend to listen, take me at my word that I've done the checks I've said I've done, and cut to the more complicated stuff faster.
Speed? It all depends. DSL and Cable use different methods of transporting data. In broad terms, MTS is slower but more consistent, Shaw is faster but more 'bursty'. So, if you like to watch streaming video or listen to streaming music, MTS will give you better consistency, Shaw can do the stop/start jerky thing more often than MTS. (of course you can tweak your buffer settings to even all that out).
But, it really depends on your location. I had Shaw since about 2-3 months after it was introduced. I pried MTS a year or two later and decided it sucked. I tried again two years ago and it wasn't fast as expected but very unreliable. So I stayed with Shaw. I moved and took my Shaw with me, but the speed really dropped (I would avg 400K at my old location, and now avg was 250K). Shaw tried everything to get me back to where i was. I tweaked, I replaced the router, I did a lot of work trying to fix it, but no go. I tried MTS and saw an immediate improvement -- 350-360K consistently. Sometimes I even avg $375-385K. That's about 10-20% above their max service level. So I cancelled Shaw and stayed with MTS. Which is best? For me at this location, MTS without a doubt.
Downloads? If you want to download a large file, Shaw would probably beat MTS by about 5-10%, the larger the better for Shaw. All other things being equal, this would be the case regardless of the number of other Shaw users on your node.
Uploads? Shaw is faster. Absolutely no contest. For the average user, this is immaterial. "Upload" is often browser requests, sending an e-mail, MSN messages, stuff like that. But if you need to upload lots of data, often, MTS is probably not the right choice.
Transfer Limits? Shaw has a limit on how much you can download or upload in a month. MTS doesn't. With Shaw, back when I cancelled a year ago, it was 30G/month. Sometimes I have to download large images and burn them because it's faster than getting the CD/DVDs sent out. Back with Shaw I had a problem going over the daily (1/30th of the monthly) limit and it was frustrating 'cos they would suspend the account until you called them and explained. With MTS, I dint' care 'cos it doesnt matter. That makes my life easy. If limits concern you, MTS may be the better choice.
Well, I hope that proves useful to anyone trying to walk the minefield of ISP choices. It turned out to be a lot more than I intended, but good info is hard to find, and I think this will prove useful.. :-)

| MTS or Shaw?? Posted: 4/30/2007 9:48:38 PM | When Shaw first came out with their internet and cable package a few years ago my parents switched. they said they'd be there between 2-5 on a thursday and didn't show up until Sunday. We had cable with them at the time and when they connected the internet they disconnected the cable completely. Then when they came back to fix it they disconnected the internet. When we called them about the lost cable signal it was less than 5 minutes after the guy who installed our cable left and they told us it would take at least three days to get someone to come look at the cable. It ended up being over a week. When they re-connected the internet they discovered we had a cable slpitter and said they were going to charge us an extra 10$ a month per t.v. My dad told Shaw to take everything with them and cancel all services and we switched to MTS.
After switching to MTS we recieved at least 4 calls a month from Shaw telling us about great new offers etc. etc. trying to intice us back. And yes, all the calls were at supper time. We were also recieving at least 1 pieces of mail from them a week. Eventually my dad got on the phone and told them not to call again, of course they did so my dad told them next time they called he would be sending them a bill for 100$ as they were wasting his time. He told them if they wanted they could talk to him as much as they wanted but he would charge them $100 per hour or portion thereof. They called back once and my dad did send them a bill, which they never paid. After that the mail from them started increasing (2-3 pieces per week). This time my mom called and told them not to send us mail again, which they continued to do. So my dad did the $100 thing again. So they started sending mail to the 'current occupent' of our address.
With MTS we have had very few problems. At first there were a few wee little incidences and we sometimes have trouble with recording, but the incidences are few and far between.
I also have MTS for my cell phone and haven't had many problems with it. There was a wee problem at first with downloading, but a trip down to the MTS connect store quickly fixed that. I had telus before and found it never worked on campus at the university (constantly dropping calls and going into roaming, even outside) so I was going to switch to Rogers but the sales person told me that their tower in the south end is angled down slightly towards the university so students can get reception in the tunnels, but it affects service on the other side of Pembina, where I live, so I went with MTS, even though it's a bit more than Telus and Rogers. I didn't see the point in having poor service in one of the two places I spend the most time.
