Hey. If any of you have Shaw Digital Cable, now is the time to upgrade.

They have a new non-HD PVR available now which is not yet advertised on their web site. A PVR allows you to pause live TV and automatically record shows using the menu system. It is a dual tuner system, so you can watch one show while recording another or watch one recorded show while recording two others at the same time. My friend who already has been using one says he gets about 20 hours of record time on the hard disk.

They also have these tiny little digital receivers that are about the size of box of Christmas cards.

The PVR sells for 148.00 and the small sized receivers sell for 48.00.

Now, here is the good part. If you have existing shaw digital cable boxes, you can bring them back to Shaw and they have an equipment buy back program where they will give you a 48.00 credit on the old equipment against either of these units.

I just traded in one receiver and paid the 100 bucks difference to get the PVR and I traded in two old clunkers (first generation receivers) for two of the new little guys. The little ones are great if you are tight on space and are not doing anything fancy with the audio/video hookup as they only have basic RF OUT and RCA stereo connections. No component video here, but I didn't need it for my daughters' rooms. This basically is a free hardware refresh to get newer equipment if you don't need the fancy connections.

Apparently, the HD version of their PVR has dropped in price too, but I don't know how much it used to cost, so I can't compare. Personally, my TV is HD ready, but I don't see the point of getting an HD receiver until EVERYTHING is HD. I hate having to switch between standard and letterbox aspect ratios depending on the channel I'm watching.

I got the HD PVR digital receivers about 2 mouths ago and I love it with the price around 735.00 at this time they also have a smaller one , and I think it's around 400.00 put i love the HD so I went with the big hard drive I can record up too 90 hours on digital, and 60 hours HD . I also have Shaw on demand so I can set my receivers up to tape movies and tv shows with the VOD on Demand : PPV: HD: PVR:
I can set my receivers to record weekly and setup to record Movies, I can also setup my shows online and movies cost 4.99 per movie, and put the receiver has to be on to record. Then I have a DVD recorder so then I put them on to DVD. I'm working on the full season 6 of Sopranos and Entourage, also CSI just don't ask How much it all cost LOL LOL

Most services of cable/internet/phone require a 30 day notice, it usually doesn't matter what company you are for.

I am a Rogers customer for wireless and I cancelled my first account 2 years back and it required a 1-month notice, same with MTS dialup internet.

I use neither, I don't have a need for any of MTS' services since their internet is a bit over priced for me, their TV services aren't available here and I'm not a big fan of their cellphones, and Shaw isn't available in Brandon at all.

Also, MTS' customer service was some of the lousiest customer service I've seen in quite a long time, I've seen family members stressing out with MTS over a billing error and "they only have 5 more minutes to talk because the call centre is closing", but with Rogers I actually had decent customer service, I remember phoning at some random hour in the morning, and they were there to help and got it done in under 5 minutes!

For net, I use Westman Communications, which is mainly available in Westman

Almost also forgot..

I was cellphone comparing plans between Rogers and MTS a few days back.

MTS and Rogers have a price war going on since the fall. I compared the prices, and found Rogers to be cheaper.
Essentially MTS was a few dollars more expensive than Rogers.

MTS: For $25 (or 20 with a bundle.. and I wouldn't have a bundle if I had a cell with them) you can get 300 anytime minutes, Free MTS Mob to MTS Mob, 6pm nights & weekends.

Rogers (what I have): $20 plan with 250 minutes (you can get 350 for $5 more), 6PM N&W-ends, unlimited local "network" calling (including Rogers cell/homephone (doesn't matter in MB because it doesn't exist here) and Fido) and $5 1000-minute Canadian long distance plan.. which equals to 25/month.. I got the 1000-minute plan by talking to customer relations.. mainly since I was a customer for a while and felt that I wasn't getting a great deal.. I had to renew my contract for it.. but it saved alot on long distance charges..

But anywho, coverage wise, MTS can't be beat, but I'm happy with Rogers as I said, especially with selection of phones, and now I'm done my MTS vs Rogers thing.

Hmmm...my MTS box died today, and "customer service" said they could have someone there on Saturday to look at it. No, I am not able to bring the dead box anywhere and swap it, I have to have a "technician" come to my house to plug it in and confirm that there is no LED activity. When the rep assured me that he wasn't kidding, he also made me feel so much better by letting me know that he will make a note that my being without any TV for 4 days did not please me. Guess FTA satellite will start sooner than I planned - I can't believe that.

Ok so I phoned Shaw about the static I was having since I switched over...smart guy said to change my bedroom phone (which has no static) to the main jack I use to see if static or if the connector. I tried that and ended up buying a new phone (no big deal since my $25 Walmrt deal that I bought 6 years prior seemed to be needing to be replaced).

I still prefer Shaw for value and what they offer to meet MY needs (I don't watch much t.v. and can't complain when I receive my monthly bill)!

I have MTS for phone, TV, and internet. Twice in the last two months, my internet connection has disappeared. The first time, I had to disconnect the TV even though it was working. When I turned it back on, it wasn't working. I had to wait a day or two for the technician to come out and it turned out it wasn't installed properly. Next time, same thing but it came back on. Its annoying that when the internet craps out, I have to disconnect the TV and reset it. The technical support person did kindly offer to let his supervisor know I wasn't too happy. The first one I dealt with said that maybe I should switch to Shaw if I thought it would be better. Arggg.

I know its annoying for them to deal with people that are already aggravated but they need to remember the fact that the aggravation is caused by their equipment failure.

I'm not sure if Shaw is much better for customer service. It seems I switched because the internet had slowed down so much since the original install.

dianthus, there are some configurations and locations that see a slow down in Internet speed when they purchase MTS TV. Having both services on the line can degrade one or both because the line may not be capable of handling the necessary bandwith. A simple test can be performed in which you install a program to measure the bandwith, start a download from a known good, fast location, and then start channel surfing, especially the digital channels. If the bandwith drops significantly, and increases when you stop channel surfing, then MTS needs to update the line. I don't know what plan you are one, but if you are on the $40/mth plan, you should be getting around 300kb/s (no jerkiness on watching medium res streaming video, possibly some on hi-res). That's about 80% of the max possible under normal circumstances.
A good case can be made for having one provider for Internet and one the other for TV just to keep the two needs on separate and less-congested wiring.

I also live in the country, and have few issues with MTS as we have satellite and high speed internet through RF Now - a speed test rates the uploads as fast as any available in larger centers (well, specifically Vancouver).

Let me just say that you have no idea how good MTS and SHAW are until you are forced to have to deal with TELUS......count your blessings friends, count your blessings!

When this thread first came out I had nothing but good things to say about MTS,but that has certainly changed. It truly sucks to have only one choice for internet. I had a tough winter;there was no work in most of western Canada for heavy equipment operators. We were on a tight budget and could rarely afford to pay all of my Hydro and phone bills,so we got behind. Lost phone service once when a $50 payment didn't go through for some reason. I lost my MTS cellphone when I just couldn't keep up on the bills, and because of that my internet was disconnected. How the hell are Internet and Cell phones connected? Had to borrow money from my parents to make a payment so I could get the internet back up. MTS bills for internet along with the Home Phone service and that was paid up. Unfortunately I don't have many choices out here;I'm pretty much stuck with MTS for internet unless I want to pay big bucks for a satellite system. I am going to change my long distance provider to someone else, and that's about the only protest I can make.

Shaw all the way... tried MTS but got out of the contract by telling them they could shove their system up the butts as far as it would go. That when I joined some of my equipment did not work like the dvd player and the service was poor. Had the system like three days and went back to Shaw and would never leave them again.

In April moved to Whitehorse trust me there is a monopoly here and you only have one provider that I know of. I think there is satalite but need to check into that as Bell expressvu is crappy also. I will never go back to them because their techs are not techs at all nor can they speak the language clear enought to help anyone. Who knows where their help line is located.... If we ever get another provider here like Shaw I think things will automatically improve. When ever there is competition service improves some however not in the case of MTS....

Shaw is soooo much better in service and simplicity to use. The tech staff were always extremely helpful and speedy in viewpoint....

Ok, being from out of Province, in BC, we have Telus, which would be very similar to your MTS, of having DSL.

I have used DSL through Telus, and had very little trouble with them.

As for Shaw, I suppose they are ok, BUT, with Shaw, you are also connected onto a cabling system, that is also shared with all your neighbors.

Another words, it is not a dedicated connection, through your telephone line, like MTS/Telus DSL is.

Persoanlly, I much prefer the dedicated DSL connection through Telus, then with Shaw.

Well,I had some interesting experiences with MTS this summer. I was paying off my cell phone bill as I could, and then MTS lets me know it's not fast enough to suit them. Either pay about $500 in 6 weeks,or I'd lose my internet as punishment. I was pretty pissed off,but there wasn't much I could do. The only thing I did do was send a letter off to the CRTC. They responded back saying my problem wasn't in their scope, and they were forwarding my complaint to another agency who said the same thing. However that agency did forward my complaint back to MTS.

A few weeks ago I got a phone call from a customer relations manager from MTS. She asked me to explain the situation. After I did she apologised for the trouble I'd had and said my internet would not be cut off as I had been a good steady customer for a lot of years. She also asked me about whether or not I'd been given a chance to pay my cell phone bill before the contract was terminated. I said I was told by MTS's finance department that the bill had to be paid in full, about $250 which I simply could not afford at that time, and I was not offered any chance to pay it off over a period of time. She apologised for that too,and offered me a good deal:pay off $400 of the bill, and the rest would be forgiven.

Got another surprise today. My phone bill arrived in the mail. It's usually about $100-$110 depending on my long distance, and includes internet. This bill was less than $4. MTS had credited me with 3 months of free internet,I guess as a way of making up for their actions. I was pretty surprised. Guess I won't be looking for another provider after all.

Let me get this straight, you sent a letter of complaint to the CRTC, to inform them, that MTS expects their customers to pay the bill on time?... and in turn, the CRTC guilted MTS into giving you three free months… nice

Not exactly. The complaint I was trying to make was that I shouldn't have my internet cut off because I couldn't pay the cell phone bill. How are internet(which comes through the landline and is always paid off)and my cell phone connected? The CRTC didn't do anything;they just forwarded it to another agency, something like Canadian Consumer Tele-communication Service(CCTS)or some such. The CCTS didn't do anything either because it didn't fall into their scope;they just forwarded it back to MTS,which I thought would be the end of it. I was pretty dumbfounded when Customer Relations at MTS called me and told me that their finance people hadn't handled things properly. The internet credit was completely out of the blue.

We're using Shaw.... and I found out that if I take the Shaw cable box out of the loop, & connect the coax directly to the back of the TV I get a better choice of channels than I have with the box ( I can get the Turner Classic Movies channel if I leave the box disconnected, but was told by Shaw I'd have to buy another channel package from them if I wanted it).

Be grateful to have a choice! Not so long ago, my internet service was 26.2 kbps with MTS dial-up. For close to 30$ a month!!!!!! And tech support was almost non-existent. In the country, there is no SHAW. I am thankful to now have wireless internet through a different company, but still have to live with MTS for my home phone and alarm system. It took me five years to get my landline fixed so that it didn't just die in the middle of calls and not come back for days. Hours upon hours of waiting to talk to someone who may or may not be any help at all. And when I cancelled that atrocious internet service? Yep, there was a 30-day charge! Even though I really couldn't use it because it just kept timing out for anything over 20K.
