well since the administration is not going to change their minds, it being their site and all, then i guess you will fly . i would rather look at a picture of someone i am corresponding with then a dog or a kid or a sunset. if you want to have those as secondary photos then thats ok but i think its a good idea to have the main picture as one of you. i see you are trying to antagonize by making your main picture something other then your face. you must like to fight. cant you see you wont win . anyway i doubt very much you will leave. good luck with this though.

I just did a quick search through my city, and it seems like all the profiles that had pictures of something other than themselves have dissapeared.
Congratulations admin!!! You've done it! You've made your site just as boring as all the other dating sites out there!!!

This is a post from Admin ..the Biggest Fish around ...on Site suggestions Forum area

Reporting Image As Not Human
Posted: 4/9/2007 154 PM
"There are a lot more users then 1.4 million, around that many used the site this month and so far 4,000 users or so have had their main images deleted for not following the rules. many of these 4k users are highly active spending hours a day here and use the forums so the problem looks waaaay bigger then it actually is."

Three things:
1. Admin is not about to change his mind
2. There are a lot more users that follow joining rules and who don't care
about this issue
3. Artistic types and people who value their privacy are fkd...

Dear Marcus,
Thank you for creating this site....I think it would be fair to say that people should be required to put up pictures of themselves as an introduction...Not a ball player from the NBA....or Jimmy Hoffa.....etc..Current pictures would be a plus...
If the headshot is inside a flying fish ....ok, that's cool and funny..we all need a laugh
A body builder with no head...no,dats not you is it..Rachel Welch..dats not me...
The ol' if ya got yahoo or msn..I'll send you my picture....save it buddy...
'cause I know you jest want my email address...I smell a rotten fish ....
Oh, what is with the people in other countries that are wearing thongs...(the men)
I appreciate the post ...have a beautiful day...Michala

That's what I don't get. If the problem looks waaaay bigger then it actually is, then why does it need fixing?

Well... I liked this site because it was different and it seemed to have people here that weren't so focused on the "looks" of a person but more on the aspect of what a person was like on the inside... Apparently I was WRONG about the whole thing...

I don't think it's right to make people whom come here for friendship, chat or forums to have to have a head shot be their main photo - AT ALL!

What does ones face have to do with ones opinions? Is it that you will ignore the opinions of a person "unattractive" and will all rally behind the opinions of the "attractive" person?

I don't think that a face or body shot should be required. I had a picture of my favorite goldfish up for a couple of days when he died. I had many nice comments on how pretty he was and how people didn't know there were goldfish like that.

If people are so stuck on the way a person looks then why do they talk at all...

I guess that people whom insist on this could use the filter that you set up for it of must have photo...

But here is a BETTER IDEA : make the filter in to 2 separate filters that people can choose from : one filter that says : TO CONTACT THIS PERSON YOU MUST HAVE "HEAD SHOT" PHOTO and the other filter that says : TO CONTACT THIS PERSON YOU MUST HAVE "BODY SHOT" PHOTO with a warning that states : THIS HEAD/BODY SHOT MUST BE OF YOU AND MUST BE REASONABLY CURRENT! IF YOU VIOLATE THIS FILTER YOUR ACCOUNT CAN AND WILL BE REPORTED AND POSSIBLY SUSPENDED OR DELETED COMPLETELY. <--seems a bit more fare don't you think?

That way people whom aren't really concerned with other peoples looks but want to get to know someone for who they are and don't really want to contact people whom are that superficial anyways, can also know up front that the person's profile that your looking at, is the type of person you don't want to contact anyways. <--that's exactly how I would use this filter! And I did that last night!

That seems way more fare then just being able to randomly search through profiles and because someone doesn't like your picture can report it. I find nothing wrong with reporting people for nude, violent or overtly offensive pictures or profiles.

But to make someone show ones face in a time when people can't always be trusted and when identity theft is so rampant is just wrong.

When did non-censorship and safety just get thrown out the window because people are so worried about looks?

I wonder how long it will be before someone finds my main picture offensive?

Yeh, there's a bunch of pics still on here S Sweet.

I finally gave into the urge to report someone just to see if the image disappeared immediately. It was a guy in my local area who I happen to know is also married, but claims divorced on this profile. lol So he sort of deserved it. But anyway, the pic doesn't disappear immediately so Admin and his herd of deleters must have to verify that the reporter is telling the truth before any deletions. Lots of work there!

On the downside, now I feel like one of those dorky ass hallway monitors in high school and expect to be pelted with spit balls from all the cool kids since I tattled. I don't think I'll do it again.

Bikeman you said dating sites shouldn't be a place to display art and other things. Yet your main pic is of you and your bike. Your whole profile says you are into that scene.
Kasandroid, I changed my mind on this topic. I suggest to the Powers That Be that they rethink this on-the-surface simple yet quite complex topic.

The inmates should not rule the asylum. False positive picture deletions outweigh the few true positive violations. Other truly indecent images are permitted??

There is a legitimate concern for some people not wanting their mug on a dating website while still wishing to use the dating site for dating purposes. If these people wish to post non-human pics, why not just allow that, but their primary pic would be some sort of generic PoF logo or something like that? People searching for face profiles can still do that search. People looking to distinguish their profiles via creativity and ingenuity can still do that. It's a valid and reasonable compromise.

Personally I don't see why anyone would value the non-human pics; I don't except for some of the pet pictures, they are cute and entertaining.

It's difficult to draw a line. I understand management's desire to put faces on these profiles, I can understand their position that faceless profiles dilute the perceived quality of the site. I just respectfully disagree. Manageable profile options and rules that permit creativity yet allow for management to quickly and accurately cull through potential profile violations seems like the best solution.

waaaah - someone dobbed me in for my tasteful "at lunch" pic - how un-Australian!!!
Yet I've had great conversations in here with others who also have no facials, as we are adults and can communicate without having to see (anyone else remember pen friends) ....
So no more quirky interesting or off beat pics to pique my curiosity....... that's sad.

^^^^ Yeah, bike man, I was getting ready to cheer, as I saw it was gone, too. Then when I checked again, there it's back!!! Still, I'm going to take it as a hopeful sign that the powers-that-be are working on getting rid of it for good. I WAS GOING to say something like, "YAY, Marcus! POF really is a different kind of site where everybody can shine, not just the Hollywood mugs and tittie-flashers!! YAY! You really DO care about what the users think!!!"

As for those who'd rather remain anonymous in their small towns or otherwise close situations, it's only because of the bad rap given to internet dating sites as a result of the sleazy Lady-of-the-Night pics and the like. Those seem to pass muster here just because those users are unashamed to show their faces.

How much better it would be to encourage creativity and other qualities besides good looks and blatant sexual come-on! We all know that the main pic is what makes the first impression which may or may not entice the viewer to look further and actually learn something more in the profile.

C'mon, Marcus! Let us give you that cheer!!!

Yup Astreaa, and y'know, the state/federal government has rules too. Do you fly kites much? I mean, since you say you have to abide by the rules, I'm *sure* that you obviously never do more than the speed limit! And ok, from your profile you probably grew up with the drinking age being 18, I'm sure you never once had a drink before then?! And of course, never returned a library book late, never showed up late for work, never had a parking meter expire (gasp!) or parked in a no parking zone, etc. After all, rules are rules! You know the rules, abide by them or go fly a kite, right? Or do the rules only apply when it suits you? I mean, you surely can't claim that you didn't know until NOW that there were speed limit rules, at your age, when there's nice signs every couple of miles at the side of the road telling you "speed limit".

Um Hall Monitor Astreaa? Admin posted this thread asking for opinions on this. People are doing just that, providing opinions. Well...except for those who can't stand that someone actually has an opinion that differs from their own...let alone dares to voice it.

Well here's my 2nd opinion....... Didn't I read yesterday that we can have a pic of our animals but it has to be like the 3rd or 4th pic??? Here's the deal...... I RE-uploaded my dogs pic again and turned off all my pic features due to this gastapo attitude and wouldn't you know it, his pic is gone again. Really..... what kind of SHIT is that!!!

All anybody had to do was click on my profile and see not only a head shot..... but a body shot as well. At least those pictures WERE of me and recent. This is a total suck pile. If you are offended by my freaking dog; I have no wish to know you anway. Apparently the thought of free form thinking is unheard of as most of you wish for others to do your thinking for you. No thanks people, I prefer to form my own opinions.

Ahh ..... lol madame you don't have a full body shot also lol so...... lol
I think if that were to happen, it would be a bad thing for the site in my opinion

Yes I do...2 of them in fact.
I actually made that comment somewhat sardonically, recalling all the whining, ranting and generalized b*tching that someone's face phote did not reveal how FAT they were, or that they had a leg brace, or walked with a cane. In fact none of the issues I mentioned are things that bother me personally, just passing along what I read in forums and hear in real life conversations. I have heard some stories that are absolutely APPALLING from people with disabilities or medical conditions who venture into online dating sites.
And again, I will reiterate my personal stand that I will NOT report someone else's images. I'm not here to be a picture cop.

There seems to be one flaw in this new option, women that have selected ''intimate encounter" do not have this option attached to their pics. Could be an oversight , or favoritism.

I am in favor of any rule and mechanism that allows the police among us to live their fantasies of reporting violators and cleaning up Dodge. These tubal Internets provide a rich source of excitement for the small-minded folk whose passions can't ever quite be satisfied yelling at their TV screens. Now with interactive technology they can finally fight back! By allowing them their role as Internet vultures cleaning up personals ads road kill, a useful outlet keeps them happy and a public service is performed. I figure for every photo they hunt down, report and have deleted, at least one written, posted opinion escapes their notice, that could also have been reported and deleted. I say let the red herring and wild goose hunts commence, as a diversion for the censors, and we can focus on literary subterfuge from the anonymity of picture-less profiles.

Frankly, I don't care what someone uses as their main picture. In a way, I believe it offers some insight into their personality, actually. If, for instance, they show you a cleavage shot, it might indicate they think that is what people will find "valuable" about them. If they show you a picture of the forest instead of themselves, it might indicate they don't think they look good enough to be seen, or that they are "hiding" from someone, like, oh, their spouse?

Either way, imho you ought to let people post what they want to post, and let the readers decide what that says to us about them.

I'm all for the improvements. Hey at least you're trying new things not leaving the site to sit and spin. It's not every site that gets this kind of personal attention from it's creator.. and for free.. If you want me to take a picture standing on my head that can be arranged.. I appreciate all the trial and error stuff ya do..
And personally, I like knowing who I'm talking to.. then again I am not in an area where I'd run into anybody that'd recognize me anyways ;)

Or, an example there alltogethernow, I recently had to put one of my cats to sleep. Anyone who is a pet owner and loves their pets, knows thats an emotional thing. I was thinking about posting a pic of my (now deceased) cat up as my primary pic for a few weeks (and yes, I still would have had a picture of me there), "in memory" (and I posted about putting him to sleep at the time). Wouldn't that be an "insight" into who I am, how I value my pets? Would you find that "offensive" in any way? And yet, this allows anyone to "report" my picture and have it deleted... why? I'm not even looking to date on here (found her already).

Heck, I wouldn't even mind a checkbox in your profile settings to exclude yourself from searches, I don't care if anyone can search on me, I'm not looking, but to me this seems like a way to "limit self-expression". If it was a way to 'report non-human main image' that simply removed me from being searchable, heck, I'd be fine with that... sure, take me out of the 'searchable dating pool', because I'm not looking for any more 'dates' than the one I have thanks, but I'd still like people in the forums to be able to click on my profile link and see who I am and email me (ie, not be hidden totally)! In fact, my profile didn't have pictures until recently, and just said "if you want to know me, read my forum posts" (and she did ), I just wonder how far we go to limit how people express themselves? I mean bike_man (sorry, just an example!) is wearing sunglasses -wait we can't see his eyes! Maybe that should be deleted! And someone with a picture thats a "full body shot" but is 50' away from the camera and you can't really tell much from it, is that still acceptable? A picture of 5 girls together in a bar shot, its got her face (and 4 others), is that acceptable as a main pic, or does it have to be just you? Where does one draw the lines of whats acceptable, and how does that limit your ability to express who you really are? If I hired a professional painter to do a very realistic portrait of me, and post that... it may look just like me, is that an acceptable "picture"? Or is that "unacceptable artwork" for a main pic?

Each person here is an adult they do not like the image they see display they can hit the next button.

Someone argued that the "pay sites" do not allow people to go headless , I can say that is not so, I have worked for two of the pay sites as a developer / lead developer a more few years back. They actually merely insist that your image be clear, not contain others , and not be nudity in the wrong section.

Should someone choose to share an image that is not themselves and then meet the person in question and are "discovered" that is their social issue. The person discovering the fake now they are the victum but I do not see this changing with the instance on head shots.
