| Vegetarian .. cravings?? Posted: 4/21/2007 9:17:25 AM | I found this in a magazine I read...Ode...about natural sugars. Ode is online, unfortunately, this article isn't....
People in India have used aloe vera for generations to treat digestive disorders, arthritis, asthma, skin conditions, and other ailments. Now, modern science is catching up. It turns out that aloe vera contains mannose, a so-called "good sugar" that plays a key role in cellular healing, lowers blood sugar in diabetics, reduces inflammation in people with rheumatoid arthritis, controls tumour growth and inhibits bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal infections, acording to Positive Health. (Dec. 2006)
Mannose is 1 of 8 glyconutrients, naturally occuring sugars that latch onto cell molecules and enable cells to talk to each other - a process key to a healthy immune system. While the body can make some of these vital sugars on its own, this process requires enzymes that may be lacking in the modern diet or depleted by environmental toxins.
Good sources of glyconutrients include oat bran and teas made from dried organic shiitake, maitake, and oyster mushrooms. Veggies and fruits rich in these sugars include broccoli, cabbage, carrots, garlic, leeks, peas, plums, figs, and mangoes. Glyconutrients are not sweet and don't cause a spike in blood sugar the way table sugar does.
As part of a balanced diet, these sugars seem to contribute to good health - though despite aggressive marketing by suppliers, no evidence supports the claim that glyconutrient supplements add further benefit.
