They already make money off what I send now. In our fair state they hired a private company to administer the child support account. They get a xfer from my check and sometimes it is 2 weeks before my ex gets funds. Think of having the float for 17 days on say 2 - 3 million dollars. On top of that fees for the process. What a damn racquet. I think the money should go from my checking account to her every time I pick my son up. Then she would have the cash NOW! The whole garnish my wages crap is a disaster plus it brings my personal life to work which I despise! I never missed apayment. I did however recieve letters stating my driver license was to be revoked and me arrested AFTER the private agency posted my checks to the wrong account for 3 months in a row. That even with the case number etc on EVERY check. I had to get my congresswoman involved to get them straight. Got a bill for $25 per check copy X 26 payments a year X 7 years. Forunately the bank only charged me $225 in the end. I prevailed and now they have garnished my check again, which in the meantime they have fallen behind due to the time it took to get the garnishment through. The whole system is a disaster and others are profiting immensely from the payments as well. That is why it is such big business. It has become just like taxes. The interest should be given to the kids. but I firmly believe every parent should be required to put 10% directly into a college plan except when there are awards like $50 per week. I think there should be a dollar threshhold where the 10% mandate kicks in, say $500 (just an example). As of now my ex admits to having ZERO funds for my son's college. I think you and I both know what that will mean! | |

Posted: 4/26/2007 10:44:15 AM | Wow, what a mess of a system. My adivice to people getting divorced in cases where they are getting along somewhat at a reasonable level is do what my ex and I did. We set up joint account that we both have access to. When I get paid, I transfer the money in from my accout and she transfers it out to her account. Works great, no delays on cheques and along with the bank statement, proof of payment. You can even set it up so that its an automatic debit from a person's to an account.
I will though qualify this by saying the reason we both have access to the joint account is that we are best of friends now that we are not married. Also, money does flow in the other direction also when I pay for something and my ex reimburses me for her half of it.
Works well for us but I am guessing in your state you don't have choice. | |

I dont think your post Op is about that it seems, your issues are with your ex';s recreational drug use. You can request an order for her to provide a list of what she is spending the child support on and if she is on drugs you can call one of those child protective service hotlines and report her. They will do an investigation and make sure the kids are not in danger and getting what they need. | |

Very rare will my ex come up here and see his kids, but when he wants to he can. He rarely pays me. If I call him and need something for the children he might send it and he might not. He sometimes sends the money for what the kids need most of the time I find away to get it. Now here is the twist, He is my kids father and money is not worth taking that away from them. They only see him about once a year but once a year is better than never. Other people take up his role of role model. But money or no money I would never stop him from seeing his kids. Not all money that the other parent sends (male or female) goes to drugs . I work full time and pay my own bills, and I pay my kids bills. I'm sorry you ended up with someone that has lower morels but that was your choice. Don't make your kids pay for it by holding out on them. Go to the store and bye them food or clothing what ever they need they r your kids. They didn't ask to be here. | |

i go out anyways so kinda blows that lame excuse outta the water.
do men not realise the money goes towards heating, hot water, clothes and food to support their offspring? and do u really think that the measly amount given pays for all of this? | |

Posted: 5/7/2007 5:36:14 AM | | I have never received child support nor have i ever taken him to court for it....im a firm believer in Karma so why should i force it on him....anyway...back to the point...if i was to receive support i wouldnt want the cash...i see how this is a sore spot with people and usually where the arguements and bitterness starts...i would be perfectly happy if he were to buy her groceries one month or the next month pay half the rent or the following month pay the cable bill for her(i watch 1 show a week) and some clothing...im sure u see where i am going with this....it kinda makes things easier and they know where the money is going to...i have my own money if i want to go out....kinda just makes sense. | |

You are incredibly judemental and you rarely base your opinions on fact! personally my ex does not care where the money that he contributes goes (opportive word..CONTRIBUTES). My ex contributes to the lifestyle that I provide for my children. My kids are healthey, clean, looked after and have a fairly busy agenda when it comes to extra curricular activities..sports, dance etc...therefore I am of the opinion and belief that it doesn't matter what i do with my support payments because in the big picture isn't it me who takes care of everything else as well? food, rent, car and any other expenses the i encurr during the month! Weahad children together so doesn't it make sense that WE support the children together? If i'm happy and my needs are taken care of everybody is happy and taken care of. (not regarding cocain as an acceptable expense or behaviour). | |

Posted: 5/7/2007 7:11:34 AM | well i have 4 kids,, from 3 moms, 2 of my kids live with me full time,, and no i dont recieve child support, but for the two that dont live with me, i pay and that money goes to the needs of my kids, the moms spend it on what they need. guess i got lucky with ex's, now i just need to find a woman that isnt an ex...lol | |

Lets break it down some here: He pays $187 in child support. I pay $200 for child care while I work during the month. Pull his half and that leaves $87 for the rest of the month to meet the needs of our two year old. She is in diapers . She eats, she drinks, she has clothes on her back and shoes on her feet. Also she has a roof over her head, she watches the cable tv, and gets movies bought for her on DVD and VHS. On top of that she has plenty of toys. She uses the water for bathtime and to get her clothes washed. So we should also include laundry detergent, bath soap, shampoo, and baby wipes. Now honestly do you think the remainder of the child support after the $100 for his part of the child care goes towards my smoking habit. Nope it doesn't even cover half of the basic needs of her. Currently she isn't getting any child support because he has just changed jobs and I am not even sure if he has taken the steps to get the child support pulled from his check. But we are making it. But as others have stated if she is on illegal drugs I would take every step possiable to get your kids. I wouldn't even worry about how your child support is being spent. Just make sure those kids are taken care of, not only finacially but emotionally as well. Illegal drugs are horriable and I refuse to have my children around it, or to be with someone who does it. Drugs will not come into my house by anyone. It's not worth the risk. My sister was with a guy on crack cocaine, the mood swings was awful and he busted her ear drum and was violent with her kids as well. So you might take abuse toward your kids in consideration. Thankfully my sister left his butt in the dust but it did take her sometime. | |

Not only do I pay money to my child's custodial parent to support our daughter there, but I have to pay an equal amount of money here at my home to support our daughter (given that our residence time is equal). How exactly is that fair again? I certainly don't get any money from the custodial parent to help provide room, roof, heat, food, clothes, toys, pay for extracurricular activities, etc. , all of which our daughter needs when she's with me.
That having been said (and not to stray too far from topic), weed is rumored to be my ex's drug of choice. Heresay has it (via one formerly mutual friend of ours) that she took it up during the divorce/separation process, but I've no real way to prove it for certain. | |
