| Why do guys want to wear facial hair?

And it does make them look older. Women typically go for men that are older than them. They want some masculinity.
How many times have you heard a woman say "I love that man's smooth face"?
But then you hear "I love the stubble look!" and then when you get them "You need to shave, it hurts me!"
I'd have something if it wasn't so damn itchy or if I didn't think I'd look ridiculous with it. I can do a shadow, but that's about it without it looking silly.  | |

Posted: 4/15/2007 3:59:58 AM | I usually wear a goatee but every now and then my job requires me to be clean shaven. To me. I just don't look right clean shaven; looks weird to me. I much prefer having my goatee. It's actually harder to take care of a goatee then it is to shave everyday but it's worth it.
While I think I look good with a goatee I don't like my look with just a mustache, I'd just assume be clean shaven. Have never grown a full beard yet. Had no desire to. | |

I don't necessarily 'want' to wear facial hair...I just do. I've been shaving since the age of ten and been blessed with very full coverage. To that end, I can grow pretty much anything I want from a 'bald' state within a week of my decision.
Having said all that...if some girl were REALLY miffed about my whiskers and if I thought she were cool enough, yeah...I'd go smooth for a bit.
It's not like it doesn't grow back.

Posted: 4/15/2007 7:17:39 AM | It depends on my hair style at the time. If I've got my hair cut short, I'll keep the facial hair minimum to zero. If I let my hair grow long, shoulder length or slightly longer, then I prefer to keep a bit of stubble going on.
I get told I look too baby faced when I'm clean shaven :P | |

Even my mother finally came around to the fact that I didn't look right without it. I was 18 and in the Navy and grew the beard to avoid having someone tell me I had to shave everyday. I go back and forth between a goatee and a fuller beard, but I always keep it neat and well-trimmed. And that's who I am; if a woman doesn't like my look for who I am, then she doesn't have to date me. If/when I shave it off, it'll be my decision. Besides, the last time I shaved it all off, someone told me I looked like Tom Arnold; the next day, the beard was growing back! | |

Would most of you with facial hair be offended if you were asked by a woman that you wanted to date to shave it off? And would you shave to make yourself more attractive to her?
By a woman I WANTED to date? Yup, I'd be offended. I'm not looking to change anyone, nor am I likely to be attracted to someone who right off wants to change me. Once I'm invested in a committed relationship, I'm more open to SUGGESTIONS of behavior or appearance modification, but not conditional demands. It all comes down to respect, in my opinion.
I did grow my beard initially at the request of a girlfriend, lesseee.....27 years ago. I discovered I liked it. I've shaved it off twice since, once at the request of a later girlfriend who wanted a peek at my face, once just to satisfy my own curiosity. Both times I started growing it back immediately after shaving it off.
I actually did once meet a woman online who asked me to shave my beard before our first date. That was a deal breaker for me. I just felt like if she was going to start dictating my grooming habits before we'd even met in person she'd likely as not continue trying to dictate my behavior on down the road.
Of course I enjoy doing things to please a mate, but in the early stages of getting to know each other I think it's important to accept each other just the way we each are and build from there. Down the road once something is established it's only natural for each to modify their behavior to accomodate the other, but the motivation should come from the individual doing the modification, not one demanding change from the other.

Some men wear them because they don't feel like shaving. Another reason is it makes you look older or younger then you really are. A older man my like to shave to make himself look younger while a younger man may not shave to make himself look older. Women above all should know the agony of shaving and could understand why some men don't shave at all. If society said you didn't have to shave your legs and it was the social norm, I promise that women wouldn't shave their legs either. Thank (whatever god(s) you worship) that women do shave their legs at least in this country. | |

However if I had a gf who prefered me without my goatee i'd shave it off for her as any man prolly would. I keep getting told that i'd look better with short hair and a clean shaven face but I like the way I look and if they don't pish who cares! My goatee fine i'd shave that off if a gf wanted me to, but the hair on my head will be any syle and length I want it to be :P | |

Posted: 4/15/2007 5:04:20 PM | Why do women pay for bigger breasts? It is a secondary sexual characteristic. For you it says "hey look I am a woman and adult". Same thing for guys, only ours doesn't require surgery of special clothing just regular upkeep.
For some guys it is part of their identity and they might be reluctant to shave it off, others won't mind one way or the other. So ask the guy in question. | |

In a relationship I will do whatever is more attractive for the woman even a beard(which is itchy as h*ll but it passes with time. I would talk to your partner and seeif he wouldn't mind and also make it clear that is more attractive to you if he's clean shaving. I also know that sometimes I will do the opposite of what she wants if I'm upset or hurt by her in some way but keep in mind if this happens it could just be a lazy couple days(so ask). Posted: 4/15/2007 7:38:27 PM | I started wearing a beard because no one ever taught me how to shave without getting all the irritation, you know, the red spots on my neck and face. I just shaved the way I saw my dad do it, and it didn't work all that well so I just let the beard grow. I felt too foolish asking anyone how to shave any differently. Later in life, I read a guy's 'manual' on life, and learned, hence, now the clean shaven look.
Would I let it grow out if a woman I'm dating asked? Sure. But when I was younger, would I have shaved it? No way, because I knew my face would have looked like a battlefield. | |

2) Keeps my face warm in the mountains.
3) We don't wear makeup... so shaving is a way to toy with our appearance.

Dude, I so want an old man moses beard...
Shaving your face every day is a pain in the butt-hole; plus, I have a problem with shaving irritation... No matter what I try or how I change my shaving technique it only minimizes it, but never totally gets rid of it. I pretty much keep my face beard hair free, but I sometimes like to change it up.
