| Why do guys want to wear facial hair?
Posted: 4/15/2007 10:09:09 PM | In the summer i usually shave it off due to the heat and in the winter i let it grow more lazily then i usually would simply to keep the chill off. Asking a guy who might work outside in his job to shave his beard is kinda cruel as a lot of us dread wearing scarves and thus use a beard to keep ourselves warm.
Would i shave it off if asked? In the summer sure but come winter best youd get is a trim if that didnt work oh well sae la vie. | |

Guys get more attention with some facial scruff. The attention makes them think they will get more sex.
The reality is that for most guys, facial hair means less sex. Most women will comment on facial hair but don't like kissing it or having it rub against their sensi-bits.
This isn't all women, of course, just a majority.

I personally prefer not to grow facial hair, atleast not for long periods of time, thats my preference, not because someone would want to date me or not. I don't think anyone should be pressured or almost told to do something for their partner or else....
Thats just not right and it's not true love if you let things like this get in front of you. It doesn't matter how someone has their hair on their face or on their head/or not, or how they dress specifically. As long as people are clean and take decent care of themselves to smell good and look somewhat decent if they can help it, that is ok. But please don't have some television program influence you and others about what you would think of a guy and guys in general, and how he wears his facial hair or anything else.
To everyone here...Please don't beleive many things you hear on tv, all this fashion stuff and that, just learn to , from your heart, to accept someone for them and appreciate them for the person and the character they are. Don't let some people distort your thinking and ideas of what 'they' THINK is beautiful or sexy or "acceptable".

Well I do, but only because I'm dealing with people almost all day and trying to sell a service. Ok so I don't shave everytime, like the day after I shave because I have sensitive skin and it hurts like a ****er. I believe that we wear facial hair because of some sort of caveman part of us, no matter the reason. It's also like why women wear the clothes they do, or put make-up on their faces; it's all about prefrence. To me I might not shave though if I had a couple days off and I could grow a beard, like while taking a course. Yet if a really hot woman was attracted to me, I would hope she would be more attracted to my mind, or personality than my face. After all, looks faid over time and yet your personality doesn't.

Posted: 4/16/2007 11:52:41 AM | When I was young(er), I really wanted to grow a beard/mustache. Problem was, it was very blotchy, with big hairless spaces on my cheeks and chin. Plus, it grew red/blonde, while my hair is light brown. I gave it up as a bad attempt.
Now,decades later, there's plenty of hair. But the last time I tried, it grew in white. My hair is still light brown. So I guess I missed my window of opportunity. I don't feel much loss.
And shaving each time I shower is really no inconvenience. | |

OP: Why do you think you get to ask? What gives you the right to even THINK about asking a man to justify his choices for his body? I realize you probably didn't realize the entrenched sexist nature of the question, but man, that was fun! I will do with my body what I choose, as I am sure you are aware Roe vs. Wade confers the same on you. (Yes I realize the original case was about abortion, but precedent has spread waaay beyond that now....)

I have a kind of designer stuble that if left for 3-5 days makes me look more manly and less like a kid and a bit 'rough and ready' if you catch my drift. My hair has the same thickness all over and isn't patchy like most guys. So guys, if you have bum fluff, do us a favour and shave it off!!!

Posted: 4/16/2007 3:39:19 PM | Personally, I have been told that a goatee fits me well. When I shave it, I look like a kid, and hey, I have not hit that point in my life that I feel the need to look 10 years younger.
Contrary to what your post suggests, most people with groomed facial hair find it more time consuming to shave since they now have borders to maintain. So unless you are referring to those few out there who wear the unkempt beards, I seriously doubt it has any thing to do with laziness. Do women with short hair prefer it like that because of laziness?
Would I shave my goatee for a woman if she asked me to? Well, that depends on how interested in that woman I am. | |

Posted: 4/16/2007 10:00:18 PM | I shaved every day in the Army. I couldn't even get thru a weekend without shaving. Someone was bound to find me and make comment.
I got so feed up with shaving it isn't funny.
Then I became a Detective for 2 years. I had to prove to people I wasn't Military since I worked on a Military Base. So I used that as an excuse not to shave often.
Now I own my own business. I shave for church. Or during certain times of the year I do special jobs and I shave for them. I even wear a tie.
But answer as to why I like facial hair... I hate cutting my face with a razor.
What I'd love to do is find a good woman that isn't squimish. One that could take a pair of tweezers and pull my face hairs out. Don't get all crazy. Native Americans used to do that all the time. Its why they never had facial hair and never shaved. They kept it pulled out by the root. That is what I'd prefer. | |

Sometimes Miss -- my 23 y.o. son as well as others on POF would probably like to know more about your shaving technique to avoid irritation. Please share what you know?
Living-it-up -- My opinion re: facial hair has developed over past years - the "10 Years Younger" show merely reinforced what I had already surmised on my own a while back. I think that trying to stay reasonably in fashion is generally a good thing for people who want to be thought of as attractive by the majority of others. But of course fads can get pretty silly. I just hope that the current facial hair trend (fad?) will be out of style before too much longer!

I get to ask because I posted in the "Ask a Guy" thread, and my questions are legitimate, and sincere. I get to ask because I would truly like to know honest answers from real men who are willing to share what they think. And their and my opinions and preferences are just as valid as yours anyday.
Of course we all will, hopefully, do with our bodies what we choose - whether we're male or female. No brainer there. And each of our choices, obviously, has consequences.

OnlyChild -- Since women can more easily hide legs/armpits, I think that a lot of women shave only when necessary - therefore perhaps more in summer than winter, etc. Of course frequency would also depend upon whether they're in an intimate relationship.

Geez, if I had some serious cash, I'd go and get some electrolysis to get rid of it. I really don't like having facial hair. I like being clean shaven because it makes me look younger, and it's funny to have people guess my age wrong

Seriously, I think a lot of men see it as an expression of rugged masculinity (and from my experience, a lot of women do too). A lot of it also has to do with finding the best look for one's facial type (yes, men do actually think about these kinds of things). Some men have faces that look best clean-shaved, others don't. I think my face is a bit too round without a beard, and I found that women generally find me much more attractive with a beard and shaved head. And since the picture on my profile was taken, I've switched to a full beard instead of a goatee, and have gotten even better results. Yes, there are some women (like you) who don't like it, but those women probably wouldn't like me without the beard, either, because I don't have the type of face they find most attractive (i.e., the George Clooney/Brad Pitt look). | |

The show's fashion experts stated that most any man in his 30s or older will look 10 years younger without the beard, etc. And I have to agree...the change was dramatic for both men.
I agree too. 3 years ago I shaved my goatee off and I was asked for ID when I went to buy my now ex a pack of cigarettes. I'm 31 years old. I don't want to look 18. My picture on my driver's licence sucks. The less people I have to show it to, the better. | |

A van-deuson( i think that's how it's spelled) is very sexy on men. I would think the guy feels that he looks better sporting hair on his face. I'm sure it's not an easy task to shape his moustache and the thin lines of hair on each side of his mouth neatly down around his chin. I would say it's certainly not due to being lazy that's for sure.Now I would say it's quite an ART.I certainly would not want to be shaping facial hair...alot of work. Choice is a wonderful thing, if it makes you feel good by all means wear it. | |

Some women would compliment the beard, others would compliment me as soon as I got rid of it. I hate grooming daily. I don't take any personal pride in my appearance, but I definitely take pride in my hygeine, and I was always making sure the facial hair was clean, since I'd see other guys with beards and stuff with food/bugs/small animals in them and I'd be paranoid I looked like that.
Currently, I have no facial hair, which is the way I like it, even though it's more work keeping it off than grooming it. I also go through more razors that way.
I'd be too stubborn to shave off facial hair because a woman asked me to. | |
