Wait a minute here people, this is a very serious issue. How do I know, because I have the same issue. A F-14 hold nothing against me, that's the semi-pro's compared to me. I would definitely go and see a doctor about this, it is life threatening issue and will take years of your life. Yes i said years if not 10's of years. It is doing a lot of damage to your heart and lungs. I tried the CPAP machine and it won't work for me because I have the obstruction sleep apnea. I'm actually going under the knife shortly, from what I'm being told they are going to move my upper jaw and my lower jaw forward, heck i'll look completely different after the surgery, that and having my mouth wired shut for about 6 weeks. Huh, new look--------maybe i should rob a bank right before i go in and get a new face they'll never catch me..

Ear plugs might be a good short term solution for your partner. However, you have to get this looked at now!

I used to snore like hell, would always wake up tired and had high blood pressure.
I had a sleep study done and come to find out I have a severe case of sleep apnea.
My oxygen level would drop down into the low 80's (I smoked for 30 years).
When they woke me up after the sleep study at the hospital, I felt like I was 30 year younger and full of energy!

I got a CPAP and oxygen condenser that gives me 2LPM. I now wake up feeling refreshed, my BP has gone back to normal and I've lost weight.
I love my CPAP!

Definitely seek medical expertise first! And Trev, good luck with your surgery.

I had an elderly couple as neighbours for years. She would always complain how horribly loud he snored. They ended up in separate bedrooms, which gave her a degree of relief. (He was REALLY loud).

Two weeks after he passed away, she was outside gardening, and I could tell she was crying. Thinking she had somehow hurt herself, I ran next door. Yet all she said was "I miss his snoring so much". Awwww...

All good advice for the snorer, but here's something for the partner.

Having some other background noise to focus on really helps me. They make sound machines for that purpose, so you can sleep to the sound of ocean waves crashing, for example. Another option is simply a fan. The whitenoise gives me something to focus on other than the snoring, and I can usually sleep with that by itself, even when my guy is snoring loudly right next to me.

My brother and one of my friend's husbands have solved the problem by sleeping in another room. Both couples have been happily married for 20 years and my brother and sister-in-law have five kids so they obviously have sex at least occasionally, lol.

As others have noted, the sleep apnea issues are a must to check out then I think you try everything and find something that works for you. Everyone in my house snores, even the frigging dogs, because we all have allergies, well don't know if it is the allergies with the dogs....

Try breathing exercises or meditation, you can learn that doing yoga because they teach you how to breath properly. Snoring is due to lack of air.

I've tried everything, strips, throat spray, nothing worked.

I took a sleep study and found out I suffer from severe sleep apnea. You should take my advice and the others on here, go talk to your doctor. It's bad and it's treatable. I have a machine now that helps me sleep.

K, train the Cat to sleep on your face. Yea, it probably won't help the "snoring" but it'll sure muffle it a bit.

They're called "eyes, ears, nose and throat doctors" maybe contact one of them if it's REALLY bad. No, honestly. It could be a sleeping condition and one may have a solution for you. Sorry for the "Quip" but it was funny. Seriously, look into it.

I was also a very loud snorer and I would have complaints in college from the room next to me through the concrete block wall. I did go in for a sleep study and I did get a CPAP machine, however that did not work out the best for me so about a month ago I had surgery where they took out my tonsils, uvula, and part of the soft pallet in the back of my throat. I have been snore free ever since and it is amazing what life is like when you can actually sleep at night! So like everyone else on here, go to the doctor first and talk with them.

I've dumped a woman for her snoring before.

Some things i'd put up with. Snoring isn't one of them.

I've nothing to offer in the way of help, but I find most sleeping sounds to be very comforting to listen to. I've not experienced being with someone who had a problem with being overly loud, though.

Personally, I can NOT sleep in the same bed with someone who snores.....literally. If they snore, I cant's sleep. However, I used to snore like a freight train. Since I had 2 heart attacks in Dec. of '06, I no longer snore. Doc said I had a severe lack of oxygen. Snoring isnt something that should just be chalked up to being something annoying. I thought the same thing as alot of people do. I thought maybe it was just a case of sinus trouble, etc. But, that turned out not to be the case. There were alot of other "symptoms" that came along with the lack of oxygen (things I didnt recognize at the time as of being heart problems), snoring just happened to be one of them. I'm sure that's not the case for all snoring problems. I just wanted to point out that it's not something that should be overlooked.

i snore...and my last long-term bf was a light sleeper. apparently i don't snore too badly, and laying on my stomach tends to prevent it. but if your gf has such a big issue with it, has she considered ear plugs? it seemed to be a reasonable solution for my ex and i.

this OP needs to go to a sleep clinic and be tested for sleep apnea then proceed as recommended by his doctor(s)

It can be normal yes, but I'd highly suggest looking into sleep apnea just in case. The symptoms, what can happen, etc.
Just Google "Sleep Apnea" & maybe even "snoring" and educate yourself. See what all you can learn.

OK while answering phone calls I see my response is more like a repeat now but I'll post it anyway.

Well after 3 months of doctor delays the day's finally set for next Wednesday. It's kinda weird, I want to get this over with so I can start living a normal life with that I mean actually sleep and get rested. While at the same time not keeping everyone else around me up with my loud snoring.

On the flip side i'm scared to death of this surgery. That and being on a liquid diet for 6 weeks. Anyway I'll let you all know how everything went.

With me luck,

Update, I just had surgery on both my upper and lower jaws to fix a sleep disorder (sleep apnea) and yah it was bad or I wouldn't be going through this pain right now. So my pictures look somewhat close to my new appearance, however my jaw and chin is more pronounced I will try to get new pic's up soon.

Healing is going along very well, i'm actually allowed to move my jaw a bit. 2 more weeks and everything should be back to normal. Thank God its only 2 more weeks, I don't think I can handle not riding my Harley any longer, the past 4 weeks have been torture.

The funny thing everybody keeps asking me if I still snore or have the sleep apnea, Heck I live alone how am I supposed to know. While I was still recovering in the hospital they said I didn't, so I guess I'll have to take their word on it. Another thing surprisingly there is actually very little pain involved in this surgery.

My ex husband snored like a bear and initially it drove me nuts but I got used to in time and then found it only bothered me on nights when I would have had trouble sleeping anyway.

I would suggest getting a small fan or something else that makes white noise for her to put on her side of the bed. I used to use an air purifier but found a small fan works just as well. The main problem with snoring is when it's not stead but comes and goes. The constant sound of a fan helps smooth that out.

I saw something on tv about this they tried out a many strips and device and none were really that effective.....however there was one body pillow that seemed to help it put you kind of on your side and the position of you body seems to help.

My dad snored like a jackhammer his entire life. He'd even wake us kids at night. It wasn't until he was in his early 70s that the doctor discovered he had apnea. When he wore his sleep machine, all was peaceful. It was getting him to wear it that was hard. He died in '06. To this day my mother doesn't sleep well because she spent more than half a century with that noise. It's just too quiet for her now.

See a doctor. Generally they'll have decongestants and nasal sprays that will help a bit. They also have pillows that help a bit.

Thanks for the update, Trev (OP).
It's great to hear all went well. I thought about you a couple of times since you started this thread, whenever 'snoring' would come into conversation with friends, and had wondered whatever became of it and you.
Here's hoping the next two weeks speed by!

My ex (yes, a woman!) snored until I got her to stop smoking. Then she became a monster. I preferred the smoke and snoring, although the monster aspect was going to surface sooner or later anyway. Smoking may be a factor in snoring.
