Sillylivy, first let me thank you for your lengthy and studied response. A person is never too old to learn about new things in life and how the time's, they are a changing.

I'll accept everything that you say Sillylivy, because I been retired from the professional world long enough, that maybe tattoos aren't being frowned upon in the Corporations I use to work for.

However, let me relate to you a couple of items that have come to my attention in the past few months.......1. I have a close friend who has a son that has decided to go to work for a Cellular Phone Company, in one of their consumer shop locations. ( It's a part time job, while he is attending college.) He has a few of these large technicolor Tattoos on both of his arms. The Shop Manager instructed him to come to work with long sleeve shirts on, as the Company does not permit their Sales Rep's to have exposed body art. ......2. A waiter at one of the nicer restaurants here in town , got an opportunity to interview for a position as a waiter at one of the top four star resturants here in the area. He wasn't accepted because he has a tatoo on his neck , which is pretty high up and can't be hidden with a shirt collar. They told him if he is able to have the tatoo removed, they will reconsider him for the position. .........3. A coffee shop here in town, which we visit quite often has a very nice young waitress whom we have become freinds with. ( She is attending college and is waitressing for income to help pay for expenses.) Her father, for Christmas gave her a gift certificate for a nose piercing and a stud diamond insert. She has been ask not to wear it to work.

Now this is southern California Sillylivy, where the unusual is usually common place. So maybe the idea of body adornment and body art is changing, but I suspect that the process may not be as rapid as you portray it to be occurring. You also saw, I presume, that recently the U.S. Marine Corp. just passed a new regulation prohibiting Marines from getting these new large technicolor tattoos. I guess they are still permitted to get small tattoos that are above the uniform shirt line. So I leave you with this thought. The world maybe changing their tolerance for body art, but I suspect the audience of appreciation is not quite as large as you may imagine.
Thanks again for your input Sillylivy, I do like to stay current on life in general.

Well, no response from sillylivy to my last Post. I suspect she departed on another world adventure. I hope that last session with the tattoo artists didn't make her ill. .........With the spread of AIDS, I certainly would want to be sure anyone using a needle on me, had sterilized the instruments about three times over !

ah - mr. haplucky4...

yes, a delayed response from me... only because i've been swamped with term projects and exams this last week - haven't had a chance to check back on the forums for a little while...

but yet - i would think someone of your age would have more maturity than to once again, make a snide remark on another's preference... my session actually went very well, (thanks for the inquiry ) as it always does - as for sterilization, my trusted tattoo artist is actually a personal friend of mine and he owns the shop... they follow all rules and regs concerned with tattooing

sure - there is still a lot unacceptance in out there... your examples are noted and i realize that "the audience of appreciation is not quite as large as" i "imagine"... i never said that it was necessarily large - BUT - world view is changing... it's a gradual process... give it another 10 years and it will be a norm... the change has been recent - it's probably only been in the last 10-15 years that it's begun to change... not an overnight process... i never said that it was a rapidly changing world... but it IS changing...

To each their own . I don't have any, exception the natural kind- scar. I have seen some on young women that change dramaticlly after childbirth. Also one never knows when they are young if they will need a c-section. I made the doctors pick a different place to cut on my daughter they were about to slice thru her rose. So location is very important. When they are on the face, I cringe....but thats just me.

It still amazes me how closed minded people can be, when you know things change. I have a total of 9 so far, looking to get my 10th one very soon and more to follow after that. My brother and I took my mom to get her first for her 50th birthday, so no i dont think you're ever to old for your first. Being in to an "alternative" way of living, ie tattoos and rockabilly, stuff, i've seen some wonderful older people completely covered and it gives me hope and the knowledge to know that I will never regret any of my work, for they are a part of me and each represent a part of me and my past. It used to bother me when people would stare or make negative comments about my ink, but then i reminded myself that things that we find common place now we're shunned back in the day as well, like women with short hair or wearing pants. Just mho. Keep on inking.

Oh since this is a California group and we're talking tattoos anyone going to the Ink and Iron in June???

I just got one a few days ago and boy did i forget how much they hurt all i did was add a little design to an existing tattoo on my back and im very happy with the way it looks now . if a female has too many ie. all over her arms and such then it just looks trashy but thats just my opinion .

Hey, what happened to no bashing of opinions?

I didn't say they shouldn't have them...that means I have an open mind sir. Sorry to disappoint you in that. I just don't think they are attractive on most women, but to each their own right?

With that said, saying they looked like dykes was wrong of me and for that I do apologize. I should have just said that I think women with tats look "hard".

I dont think that most women look "hard" not to say theres not the exceptions I have seen women with some pretty harsh tattoos ...... but I have seen some really beautiful women with tattoos and I think it adds to their beauty..... take for instance the now very famous tattoo artist Kat Von D shes a VERY beautiful woman and her tats dont make her any less of a woman........ for those of who who dont know who she is .... go here and look at this pic ......
http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=554683&albumID=0&imageID=2571864
Now I'm sure as hell not saying its for everyone because its not and I wouldnt ever get a tattoo on my face but if it works for you and your comfortable with it then so be it.......
Everyones entitled to their own opinion but if you dont want people bashing you for what you do then show the same respect

Thanks for your reply sillylivy. You maybe right about your prediction in the future about the acceptance of Body Art and other Body Adornment.

I guess being an old Fart, I view what people do to their bodies and how they dress as a statement as to how they want others to perceive them. Kids with freak haircuts, wearing jeans hitched half way down their butts and bolts through their nose, in my opinion are showing people that they want to be considered rebels and non-conformists.

I have to concede there is absolutely nothing wrong with that either. After all, it's a free Country. But by the same token they should not expect people to accept their appearance without being judgemental about it. The same applies to Tattoos and body piercing, in my opinion.

I guess the point I would like to leave with you is, until that wider acceptance of tattoos occures, I would be cautious about where I would have tattoos etched on my body. Acceptance of body art will probably occur much slower in the Business world than say in the world of artists, motorcycle riders and auto mechanics.

well - being a marketer... we've studied generations - GI generation, silent generation, baby boomers, generation X, generation Y, and the millenials...

now i'm from generation Y (born between the years of 1977 - 1994) - there's 78 million of us in this generation, making up the largest generational cohort in American history... we're 3 times larger than generation X, and slightly larger than the baby boomers (who are the next largest group and were the big focus in marketing, still are because they're the ones raising the gen Yers)...

we've been described as edgy, focused on urban style, born "wired" (tech-savvy), selective, confident, and... non-conforming!

so i'm not suprised that you view these kids as wanting to be non-conforming... we're a generation that wants to be individualistic

i agree with you in the sense that i don't have any tattoos anywhere where i couldn't cover it up easily... my back is done and i'll probably add more (if you've taken a gander at my profile, you'll see a picture of my back piece - it's pretty "tasteful" ) my other piece is on my left hip and connects to the back piece - everything can be covered up...

but, like my fellow gen Yers, i wanted my pieces to be individualized - both pieces were custom, not just picked off the wall... i was very specific in the placement and my colors... and with a lot of the oriental art, everything is symbolic and relates to who i am

it has been a pleasure having this back and forth banter with you, haplucky4...

p.s. i used to have clients in the yorba linda area - one lived up in kerrigan ranch... it's a nice area where you're at... my old job was just on the outskirts of placentia/yorba linda, laying in fullerton...
