When is Toronto going to be responsible for themselves?

I couldn't agree more.
If Toronto was able to get back our tax money that is now being given to the rest of Ontario and Canada, we would be able to upgrade and fix our transit, roads and garbage problems, but by the federal and provincial government supporting the rest of the country with our tax money we can't improve our infrastructure.

Yesterday myself and another technician had to go to Oshawa on a job. We left Sarnia and three and a half hours later we were in Oshawa (we left at 3:30 am). Left Oshawa to come home and three hours later we had got as far as Milton.

I used to date a woman in Dearborn Mi, SO i would drive from Markham to Sarnia on a weekly basis.

How fast were you driving a 3:30 am to do that drive in 3.5 hours? Irresponcible much?

And then to compare the traffic at 3:30-7 am to midday traffic is just poor as well.

Friday I drove from Markham to Downtown toronto in 35 minutes at 9 am in good weather.
Tuesday I did it in 49 minutes in the rain.

It seems that most of the traffic issues in toronto are due to out of towners driving 80 Kph in a 100 zone, or 160 kph and getting int o a wreck.

I have been to Sarnia, and sat and waited on teh outskirts of that city for 4 hours to ge to the border... and thats a much smaller traffic volume.

Well, with all due respect, every major city in North America has the same diversity as Toronto. However, Montreal has the exact same diversity PLUS the added major influence of Quebec's long-standing French roots. The diversity here is simply incomparable to anywhere in North America.

Odd that, since I believe the United Nations declared Toronto to be the most ethnically diverse city.

I'm not going to get into a one-upmanship over which is better, Toronto or Montreal. They are each sufficiently different enough that both can be enjoyed. Each as their pluses and minuses. But if you truly believe Montreal is the only place (other than the rest of Quebec) to have long-standing French roots I would suggest looking at other places in North America. Northern Ontario has a very strong french culture - can't go anywhere in Sudbury without bumping into someone speaking Quebecois, or quebecois television/newspapers/etc. The Maritimes as well - Acadie.

The whole premise of this thread, I believe, was to discuss the documentary as to why the rest of Canada hates Toronto. For many peeps it comes down to not liking the idea of a huge behemouth. Go to any small town the people will generally not like large cities, with all the noise and pollution - and Toronto has become the symbol of that dreaded and feared entity - the large city.

We drove at 100- 110 km/ hour, after all the posted speed is 100 km/hr.

Traffic issues I observed was traffic was not even moving, you just sit, waste fuel and create smog.

You can blame the U.S. customs for those delays. Myself and most others from around here would have taken highway 40 south to Sombra and taken the ferry across to the states. That would have saved you 3 1/2 of those hours. No line ups for the ferry.

Toronto isn't all bad though.

Sarnia is easy with 3.5 hours, as is Montreal, Ottawa, and London! ;-)

well having lived all over this fine country of ours, born in Ottawa, lived down east, lived in Vancouver and now live in the part of Toronto with the worst reputation Scarborough, never have I had a problem here, never heard a gunshot. I love this city, we have our problems, traffic being one of them I live in the east work out in the west, spend 2 hours a day getting to and from work. Yeah it drives me around the bend at times, but you know what A weekend window shopping on Queen street more then makes up for it. This is my home. If you have never lived here, you really have not experienced the city. After living here you have the right to bash it all you want. My only complaints the 401 and our mayor!!!!!!! other then that love the cultural diversity of the city, we are still a very green city and that makes me happy, lots' of parks and trees and grass, oh wait that triggers my allergies, ha ha who cares, I love all the parks here in this city.

Toronto gets two thumbs up from me

Last I heard Toronto was the most culturally diverse city in North America....all I'm saying is that sometimes when you walk down the street or get on a bus...whatever, you are able to tell and it feels like you are cruising through a a multiude of countries.

As for hockey, I'm no die hard fan but I'm from Ottawa and it has been good to me there and would still be there had it not been for work...so therefore I am going to support them....and hope they kick some butt

Seems a lot of people seem to think this, but I've been to many of Canada's big cities, and must say I think Toronto has the most diversity in types of people. So, checked for some stats to back up my feeling.

From:
http://www.cprn.com/en/doc.cfm?doc=160 (Canadian Policy Research 2002 document on Immigration, Diversity and Social Inclusion in Canada's Cities)

Toronto: immigrants made up to 44% of the population for the metropolitan census area.
Vancouver: 35%
Montreal: 18%
Ottawa-Gatineau: 16%

Seems, not all cities have the exact same diversity, but that's not all bad. Besides, the above are statistics and someone once said there's lies, damn lies, and statistics (Mark Twain maybe?) Exact is pretty hard to achieve in this case anyway. Different cities are just - well different. As for T.O. - it has a lot going for it - lots of different things to see and do. Sure everyone hates TO - but they are just jealous because TO has the biggest tower ;)

EGG, that was Benjamin Disreali, British Prime Minister in the 19thC. He said there are 3 types of lies - lies, more lies, and statistics.

I drove a truck long distance for years, so I've been all over.
Can't say I hate Toronto, except for the traffic. It's a fun place, there's always something going on, it moves all the time. Not in favour of that much diversity, it's gotten to the point that no one's on the same page anymore, which is a fairly large part of the problem.
Montreal's not bad, if I could speak French, I'd want to move there. Incidentally, most truck drivers dont' mind Montreal. The drivers are crazy there, but nowhere near as clueless as in Toronto, and they don't have that patented brain-dead Vancouver deathwish. In Montreal, they all run little beer can cars, but they run flat out till the traffic comes to a complete stop. It's also the ONLY city in Canada where most people know what "merge" means. Absolutely no one in Toronto does.

Curiously I don't understand the main idea of Hating any city for a few individuals that have their nose in the air. I believe that we all have lessons to learn and many of them as well.
Toronto for that matter may be a cold place to some and yet depending on the people you meet might have a warm heart or two as well.
One will always find the snob in the croud. The way I feel is that no one is superior to the other. All have an ounce of morality as well as compassion. Too bad that some feel they are above others. Hope the world and its people come down a few notches and reallly feel what being a person in the humane sense of the word.

By the looks of this thread, the snobs arn't in Toronto.. they are outside of Toronto being snobby to those inside of it.
