I believe I mentioned most of mine in a previous thread. My newest ones are Fire & Water on my wrists. Took me a few years of staring at my wrists to figure out what I wanted there. Fire represents the redhead irish lass I am  and water calms me. | |

Posted: 4/20/2007 7:33:47 PM | I got my first tattoo, 3 hearts above my ankle, when I was 18. Mostly it symbolized independance to me. Doing what I wanted to, because I wanted to.
At 24 I kept returning to a store, completely drawn to a pendant(which I still have, and have worn for oh, about 9 years now). I bought the pendant, and knew that when the time was right, I would mark myself with it. It is a Triskele. The Celtic symbol of the Eternal Trinity in life. Birth, Death, Rebirth. Mind, Body, Soul. Maiden,Goddess, Crone. Father, Son, Holy Spirit. After one of the hardest years of my life, I finally placed it in the places that I wanted it, a month before I turned 30. It goes right through me, and represents my core beliefs.
I have one more in the works, but it will not be made permanent until the appropriate life stage. It will be the "7 ages of man", of my own design, representing the Gestalt of me.
I did not get any of these chosen beauty marks for anyone but myself. And self-expression is a wonderful thing!  | |

Posted: 4/20/2007 10:22:18 PM | I applaud you all , for the most part youall have areason for your tats, the people i grew up with got senseless tats that meant nothing to them other than looky i got a tat, so its great to hear that there are sensible people with great reasons for their tats, as for me im dying to get my first tat symbolising my kids but i havent come up with anything authentic to me or them worth puttin on me other than thier names, but itll be part of it, ill just keep on brainstorming..
Does any1 think the japanese or chinese have the words hope or love writtten in english tatooed on themselves, just a Q i was asked once lol. | |

Posted: 4/20/2007 10:44:02 PM | yah the kanji symbols are popular, and have been for a while - but you have to know what you are getting tattooed and trust the artist.
A girl I know went in to get a kanji symbol of wisdom tattooed on her shoulder, but ended up getting the symbol for ****. Guess she shouldn't have got one done by someone she dated lol. | |

Anyway... I wanna add my 2 cents.... its real cool hearing about all your experiences.... the act of getting inked means something different to everyone.... thats why its soooooo cool... some use it to celebrate.... others to mourn..... it can have meaning of your past, present or future.... we've heard examples of all of that here.. Sometimes I wish that the work that I have, meant something, but, meh...... most of the time, I'm just happy with the fact that I happen to be a lover of the art...... nothing more..... nothing less..... I'm an art collector :)
As far as that dude who has nothing nice to say about any of us...... ignore his comments... hopefully he'll go away.
One last thing........ To miranduhh..... think twice about Tattooing your foot..... it dont last...... socks and shoes wreak havok on the colors.... you'll be touching it up every few years | |

Posted: 4/21/2007 11:06:21 AM | Well hope this doesnt sound too lame...... i know for a fact the most of my tattoos arent "generic" type as they are hand drawn for me.All of them are done at a time when i felt i needed a change, how i felt at the time.All hold a meaning to me and my back one is a work in progress. The one on my belly (which some figure is girly) is to cover a scar i have hated for many years Now my 16 year old daughter wants a lower back tribal butterfly and i told her, find one, keep it for a year and i will let you get it.  | |

Posted: 4/26/2007 6:32:27 PM | It took me a long time to decide what I wanted to get but I have always wanted some! Finally, just before I decided to leave my loveless marriage - I got three oriental symbols on my front right hip...translated they are: strength, wisdom, faith. All things I felt I needed to get through that time in my life. They are each about 2" high.
Then a few months later, I got another on the top of my back, quite large...another oriental symbol for: happiness. Which I felt would be the result if I had strength, wisdom and faith. It measures about 7" high by (at the widest point) 5 or 6". Then because of all the stress of the separation, buying a house, trying to advance from parttime to fulltime at my job...I ended up having a neurological episode that they thought was M.S. I then decided my next tattoo would be: health(y). It is in the middle of my back, slightly smaller than the top one. (Oh, another MRI showed no further lesions on the brain or active ones so MS has not been diagnosed). The same time I got the middle (health) one, I also got: harmony. Slightly smaller than the middle one, on my lower back (but not as low as where most get them to be visible with low-rise jeans) My reason for "harmony" is the fact that I feel once I find true happiness and have my health, I will achieve harmony.
So I am 45 years old and have gotten six tattoos all within the last year. I love them and I would like more but I will definitely be certain of what I get and where, knowing they are with me for eternity. And nope, not a mid-life crisis like many think or accuse - it is my way of self-expression and an appreciation of the art. All my tattoos were done by the same artist who works at Dragon FX at Kingsway Garden Mall in Edmonton. I won't go to anyone else now.

I love hearing about us older folks getting them, and actually having meaning. For me, the one that I have, I look at it and remember also the triumphs over the sadness of the past and the strength I gathered from overcoming some bad times in my life. Its a reminder of if I did it before, I can do it again. | |

I have had everthing said to me good and bad I was aware that all the negative bullshit would be more than the positive.I choose to be tattooed and it's a lifestyle unlike anyother.
I am not a biker and there's not a thing wrong with being one so calm down.
I don't work at the local carnival,
And last I'm not a sailor,again not a thing wrong with any of it.
Every tattoo mean's something even if it's just because you wanted it.
In my ten year's as a tattoo artist it was the greatest time of my life.
A tattoo for me is a signiture in many different aspect's,the who,when where and why and yes the what I don't think I need to explain all that we the tattooed get it!
For some to get up on here and open their mouth and have nothing to say beside's hot garbage is well stupid so have a great day and oh yeah..............Tickle it  | |

Posted: 4/30/2007 7:05:19 PM | I have 3. The first one was done here in Calgary, and it is the chinese symbol for love with my son intials above it. And yes, I verified the symbol is correct, lol. My second one was done in TO, and it was drawn out for me as I saw it in a dream. It represents my grandmother who has passed. My last tat I just got in March, it is a chinese symbol inside a "tied" heart, with the words TIEN, which translates to "heaven is in my heart" this one was done to represent a child I had lost. Oops, forgot to say where they are, the first one is on my ankle, second is shoulder blade, and the last most recent one is on the back of my neck. And yes, I want more, I want at least 2 more, one on my tailbone, and the last one on my foot. I was warned they were addictive, but I never believed it, lol. The one on the back of my neck hurt the worst, a very painful spot, but worth it. | |

I was going to get a tat a few years ago, but noticed it became more of a trend. So decided not to. As it seems, I am more unique now than I was before. lol
Don't get me wrong. I think tat's are sexy on both men and women. I'm just not a trend follower. | |

Posted: 5/31/2007 9:43:19 AM | I've always wanted a tattoo, always drawing or painting them on. I've always had a thing for the black tribal ones.
My first real tattoo I actually drew myself, it's pink angel wings in memory of a friend that died. A group of 5 of my friends got it as well so it's kind of cool to be able to say you've drawn something thats permanently a part of your friends.
My 2nd and 3rd tats I got while I was backpacking through New Zealand. Stopped into a little shop in Auckland and worked w/the artist to come up w/a cool tribal/maori design. The tats are the same, just flipped on either side of the original angel wings one.
Oh, they're all on my lower back also.
I'd love to get another one but I'm not sure what or where.
I like to be able to hide them. I hate when people have them in tacky places. I like to get dressed up and I don't need a trashy tattoo poking out anywhere. | |

Mine is a tatoo of my military service. It stands for who I am and the values I have. I am looking at others to symbolize similar values. IF it is with me for life it has to show a part of me. | |

I plan on getting a tattoo, I just dont know what. It has to have meaning, and there is nothing more meaningful then your childs name, or portrait tatted on your skin. Of course I would need the best tattoo artist, and I would fly to Vegas or Florida to get the best done. | |

Posted: 6/10/2007 5:16:34 AM | You don't need to fly to the states to get the best done - you just need to look around, we have some amazing artists here in Canada (Bear comes to mind).
And oh my god - biggest mistake ever - getting a girlfriend or boyfriends name tattooed on your body - everyone and i mean everyone that I know that did that - had to get some serious work done to 'hide' it because with the high percentage of relationships not working out - bad idea. Even on of my male friends did the mistake of doing that after they got married - it got covered up about 3 years later.
Getting a child's name or portrait forever on your skin is wonderful - because there is a bond there and they will always be your child. | |
