I once had a gentleman drive about 10 hrs to meet me for a cup of cofee. It happened that we liked each other in person as much as we did with our online conversations.we then agreed to meet again in a few hours for lunch which led to dinner ..ect...If someone intrigues and interest me I have no problem driving an hour. And starting with just a cofee or drink is by far the safes way. So if you are disappointed , uncomfotable or whatever you can kindly excuse yourself and get the hell out of there.

Holy Toledo!
Why all the fuss? Make a date for coffee, but mentally schedule a few hours extra into your day, in case it is a wonderful time. As for 50/50 driving or buying, that's a problem?
I know everyone's wandered around a little on this thread, so I'm going to take myself the liberty as well:
#1): I am "lower" than another woman just because I do not feel the need to be treated with kid gloves? Are you for real?
#2):.".just a blue collared union type of guy?" Heaven help me, I may have to start my own thread on that one! Yikes! Do you have any idea of how much money a skilled tradesman can make? (ponder that while you're sitting there balancing your chequebook, if it matters so much to you). And, if I may ask, who fixes your car, plumbing, etc? I'm pretty sure it isn't your future financial investor!
No apologies here, but I am a female willing to do the 50/50 if it seems to get to that point with a fellow, AND a licenced refrigeration mechanic (albeit retired), so you have effectively insulted me in two areas. Way to go, I suggest you look for sympathy in the dictionary, not here.
All said and done,
Good luck to all

Oh my goodness....... what lengths will folk go to (and we ain't talking driving here) to get their point across........ in the words of Shakespeare (well, not quite his words)'To drive or not to drive, that is the question'

In the words of Blondenbrainy................. this thread is getting ridiculous!

For what it's worth... I drove 70 miles through Wales to meet a lady who seemed to be on my wavelength. Nothing ventured.... The arrangement was that I would fone her when I got to the town where she lived. Yeah I left early too and made the trip. Except that she didn't answer her fone. How annoying was that? Quite. But it was a lovely day for a drive through beautiful scenery. Only one ingredient was missing. .... her!

hell i used to drive 10 and 12 hours lots of times to meet a lady for a coffee...

thunder bay to the soo was ten hours (sly's driving); sudz to London was 5-6 hours, sudbury to toronto we drive round trip when we have leaf tickets and it's 5 hours one-way (we being me and my car)
to ottawa about 6 hours for Sens tickets and we do that one roundtrip as well...unless my sister wants to take me in for a night

...and once i drove all the way from Fort frances at ten at night to pick up a date for supper in Sudbury for 6 pm...she complained she wasn't ready...so i went and caught some sleep and forgot to wake up and go back and get her...

in the frame of mind I'm in these days, i think i would almost be willing to fly overseas to find that someone special...but that's just me...people that wouldn't me half way in an hour aren't worth my time i figure...the world's a big place...too bad some people's minds aren't as big

I'd travel at least that to meet someone that may well end up being a friend, and possibly end up as a companion. Who wouldn't?

I agree with the OP - this guy just wanted t get a look at her and wanted her to do all the work - driving the whole distance to meet him. He could of at least asked her to lunch if she was going to do all the driving. I call him a cheapskate and maybe even a liar. Why couldn't they have met later in the day for lunch and why did it have to be so early on a Saturday? My opinion - he was probably married and was able to get out for a few hours - didn't want to spend money on gas, etc. etc. I guess there are not many gentlemen around anymore.

This foolish, childish and just plain waste-of-time thread sat dormant for just about two full months before someone revived it----WHY is that? It was a done subject and cannot be improved upon or even discussed any more to death than it already has!

I swear these threads need to have an expiration date------especially ones that go on to this length.

Actually I'm glad it was brought up

"Talked to someone on the phone I met on here and he wanted me to drive over 60 miles to meet him for a cup of coffee !!! What a joke and on top of that it was to be on Saturday morning."

I just had an oddly similar invite: Drive 75 miles from here to meet for a cup of coffee. (And if things go well, I can see the fantastic view from his house... eh....)
Now the OP didn't say anything about money, I think she's just being realistic asking about a meal because, such as in my case, I eat every 2.5 hours or so. Hm two 75 mile drives with a visit with someone inbetween, that's a number of hours without food. I'll need to eat at some point while I am there. It doesn't have to be with the date, but since we both have to eat anyway at the same time probably, that would make sense. But that area does not have many / any restaurants.
Oh he also asked me to give him a call - when I turn onto the second to last road there - so I don't wake him too early.

Fortunately? My friend has asked me to be available Saturday because they had surgery and may need some help, so I guess I have my honest out

Funny this thread still runs. BUT..it is a good subject ... Obviously, since it is pages and pages long! HAHA!
How far will most of us travel to meet another? Clearly it depends on the "other person" and our interest level.
I once, after much time (weeks) spent on the phone with someone new, just upped and took off to his town...some 3-4 hours away. We had a wonderful afternoon, wonderful evening, and 3 days later I headed home.
He was wonderful fun and worth every second. (I also had close friends in the same town so I had my backup.) Anyway, that 3 hour trip, three day sojourn, led to a Long dist (attempt) at a relationship. Alas...Didn't survive the distance-factor. (Still good pals tho).
I also met a great guy on here who lives in Louisiana..he drove all the way here for a meet...and now I consider him a dear wonderful friend. He took the chance and I got a great friend out of his taking the risk. (Dayum! I am seeing a "pattern" here...I end up "friends" with everyone...sigh! )

Yep..I think I WOULD drive an hour for a coffee if the interest was there.

Even tho it's like pullin teeth to get me off my island!!!

That was my reaction too, at first, but I see there are still people who are interested in the subject so I decided to write:

Dave's 8 Simple Rules for Long Distance Dating:

5 Miles or Less: Qualifies for a simple cup of coffee with no other commitments.
5 to 10 miles: Inviter pays for the coffee
10 to 20 miles: We do lunch, Dutch
20 to 40 miles: Inviter pays for lunch
40 to 60 miles: Definitely Dinner and a Movie Distance
60 to 250 miles: Overnight at Inviter's house is implied
250 to 1000 miles: Definitely getting laid here.
Over 1000 miles: Bring engagement ring

Very good rules! I would agree with another poster who said he might be married and couldn't make a long drive himself or the wife would get suspicious. But meeting halfway would be the best policy, I would think.

Woweeeeeeeeee.......just happened to check back here after a few months in hiatus...so glad it is still in the top 10 Posts thanks to the clever responces.....
I liked the NEW RULES for a travel date from a previous post but not sure how far you traveled for a date requires you to get an Engagement Ring!!
Hmmmmmm.........oh by the way ......on my last date I met a man at a nice place for a Margarita and then a ride in his BMW to dinner at a restaurant of my choice and I only had to drive about 15 miles !!
Goes to show ya there are still guys with Class !

Hmm I suppose if it were a Volkswagen that would be a dealbreaker!

Seriously, getting in the car of a strange man on a first date: bad idea.

The timing for me reading this thread is too funny not to share! I've recently started chatting with a guy on here and just today was considering where the halfway point for a nine-hour drive would be. There are a couple of reasons I would prefer to meet halfway rather than require him to drive the whole way just because he's the guy/initiator.

The first would have to be the above list about expectations....it's 650 miles! LOL

Secondly, fair is fair. If I am as interested in meeting him as he is me, there is no reason not to be nice about it. (having said that, we haven't had the conversation yet..I was just thinking about it today)

Lastly, it just makes sense to me to meet in neutral territory so that either party is not overly burdened if things feel uncomfortable.

Guess I'm just a nice girl! LOL

Getting in the car with a strange man.....you are right...it was a slight risk....but it was a lot more comfortable than sitting on the back of your bike!

And this is why everyone on the face of the planet should just get a motorcycle. There's no such thing as a bad motorcycle ride, be it for an hour or 15 hours. Then it's a good day already because you got up early to go for a nice motorcycle ride, and having a break with some good coffee and a guy just becomes a bonus to the ride. ;-)

But then, I know I don't think like most. I've driven 3 hours just to say hi, because I had nothing better to do at the moment. If I can get there and back in one day, then it's all good to me. I guess it depends on whether one's goal in life is to enjoy life or to make it highly efficient. (Not saying efficient is bad, just it sometimes is not as much fun as wasting some time.)
