Paying for dinner date with 2 for 1 coupon. Will she be impressed?

tdh,

I didn't say I thought it was a good plan!

But if I try to understand someone's actions with my values, I'm often left with "I can't understand why ....". In thinking through the logistics of what you described, it's hard to imagine he didn't have some sort of plan in mind before he got there.

Guys like that are not my problem. If women don't want to give me the benefit of being different than him, then it saves all of us time, because I'm not going to spend time trying to change her mind.

no tdh, you're missing the whole point of the example i used if you're comment is or was directed at my last post

..if i was sold on her, i'd pay for the whole evening...no questions asked...if i wasn't sold on her from our initial email convo's or what have you...i would have set up the dinner deliberately at this place where i could use the coupon...and assess the reaction

if she was what i was looking for, our future relationship would seldom be encumbered by such moot tests again...a good movie on how to find out some things about a female partner during the often confusing times of selection...is Marco Polo...where he would ask each lady one specific question...and base his decision on that answer...and even there, most women gave him the answer they thought he would be looking for, which turned out to be the wrong answer

it's one way i protect myself ...

I was always under the impression that on a first date you should always be putting your best foot forward! Somehow whipping out a coupon to pay for your dinner does not say alot about a guy in my eyes. If that's what he does on a first date, I would hate to imagine what he would do once he was in a relationship.

well I think what would be worse, is if he lied about what kind of person he was to get that second date!!! At least he was who he was and laid it right there on the table. He's a two for one kind of guy, take it or leave it, lol

I personally think it was his using the coupon to pay for *his* meal that was the most classless and "cheap" part of the whole deal.

I mean, if he had refused her offer to pay her 1/2, and said "no, thats ok, I have this 2 for 1 coupon, I'll pay for my meal and yours is free, I had a nice time and enjoyed our time together, it was well worth the cost of my meal", it might have been more acceptable. What he did was to just weasel out of his part of the bill, which is just rude and classless.

^^^Now that IS class....
I don't think that it is rude or tasteless to use a 2 for 1 coupon on a date. I think the overall consensus is the cheap, underhanded way that it was done that was offensive.
Single people on a budget should well know what it is like to maintain a home and for some people coupons are part of that equation.

Using the coupon wasn't tacky. The way he used it was. Had this man used the coupon to figure the total, then let your friend pay half of the total bill I would have thought he was being thoughtful. To use the coupon to pay only for himself on a "dutch" date was actually pathetic. Next.

Wow, thats pretty lame! I personally avoid 2 for 1 coupons on dates until we've been out a few times and know each other better. Like some have said, it would have been Ok if he had mentioned the coupon to his date first before using it. Handing it to the waitress to pay for his "half" comes right out of the George Costanza handbook...lol

Slysterling i was not commenting on your post my man. my post was directed at the post that said it might have been a plan by the man, just in case he was not attracted to the woman, which i thought would be a pretty classless thing to do.

I am with you in most of what you stated in your post and i understant where you're coming from.

paying my own way which i do on a date never any exceptions, has nothing to do with political correctness for me . i do it so a guy never thinks i am only there for a free meal and also in case he is a pig so he doesnt feel he has the right to put his hands or lips anywhere near me . now if he wants to bring me flowers ,hold the door ,take my coat that would be very nice all of which only one man has ever done. if a guy really wants to impress me by paying my way on a date which i wont let him do i say to him well if you are that bent on spending money on me give to the waitress what you were going to pay for my meal. funny how they have not done that even once. now that would impress me more then anything.

besides it was all just hypothetical stuff on my part td...
i just got to musing a bit when i realized how many of our eligible daters look down on something of value...like a coupon
so no i can't recall ever having pulled off a stunt like i proposed, but i am still mulling over putting it into my playbook...one of those super bowl trick plays...lol
i still stick by the answer for you friend in the scenario; the guy is gauch the way he handled it...maybe she can work with it maybe she can't...that's up to her...

he sounds a bit like the lights are on but nobody's home the way he handled it, unless he was thinking more sinisterly thoughts along the lines initially theoretically proposed by myself...

it's interesting on these sites where people seem to blurt out wierd answers without having thinking...and then people say, oh well it's the internet...my take is if people are blurting assinine answers out, they must be thinking them...so to be sitting in front of them, they must be thinking them also...maybe not saying them since our customs sometimes tell us not to, or even her own survival instinct tells her not to say anything...that is if she smells gold in them thar hills

the answer i would be looking for in the (my) proposed scenario would definitely depend on how dinner went...if i thought she was a keeper I'd throw it down for a laff to check the temperature of the water...I'm sure she'd pass in flying colors

to the others...like Supertramp used to sing ...Hide in Your shell...or in modern day times, back under your rock...

I'm getting fed up with some of the superficial $hit on here, I'm thinking of posting my own whiny little thread for a change why women delete all your emails when you don't feel like listening to them rag all the time and make up bull$hit logic to rationalize unacceptable behaviour patterns...at least one had the courtesy to write and say after two days..."i guess you're no longer interested...good luck."..before deleting everything"..

sure saved me some airfare finding out how haughty some people can be...i don't buy that it's just the internet bunk...they're probably scarier in real life...

OP: your lady sounds like a nice person tdh...these conundrums always baffle me regarding communication...lord knows women talk enuff as it is, but why wouldn't two grown adults hash out the cheque before they order...saves everyone some grief...then later if he pulls his coupon out, hey, nothing wrong with being thrifty...I'll admit it's somewhat unorthodox if it's a first date, but if the guy's Ok and she's Ok with the guy, she sounds like a good girl

I'll give the girlies the benefit of the doubt on this one and say, according to your premise tdh, she had every right to throw her water glass at him...then I know I'd be in love with her...

i wonder if i bought my girl a thousand dollar ring from money i earned picking blueberries and picking up bottles when I'm out with my dawg is it worth a thousand dollar ring that i just slapped the old plastic down on...i wonder?
I'm going back to my nap...cya's

Maryrachelle, Any man that thinks paying for you dinner is a get into your pants ticket is from another planet. i like paying because that's just the way i grew up.

I remember working after school and saving my paycheck just so i could take a girl from the neighborhood to the movies. Back them if you asked a girl out, you were paying, none of this politically correct crap. I liked it that way then , and i like it even better now that i can afford to do it. It's not about having a lady feel beholding to me, it's just about being a gentleman.

Somewhere along the line being a gentleman went out of style, it's never going to go out of style with me.

LMAOOOO

I LOVE IT!!! Any woman who can whip out a coupon to wherever we're going is ALRIGHT IN MY BOOK!! It beats the hell out of the ones who would pick the most expensive item on the menu and then pick her teeth when the check comes!!!

I have NO problem paying full pop....but a woman who's thrifty gets my vote every time!!! And I mean the REAL definition of 'thrifty'.....like the one who will actually insist we save for a retirement..... not the "HONEY....guess how much money WE saved when I went shopping at MACY'S today" type......

wow thats harsh! what kind of man would use a coupon and not even offer to give her her $$ back, or knowing he was going to use the coupon even allow her to pay in the first place? and who uses a coupon on the first date? maybe if they were dating for a while but isnt the first date your first impression, someone who uses a coupon on the first date would seem awful cheap to me, im fine with paying my own way and paying for my date once in a while , but not even sharing on a coupon i would be leaving that restaurant on my own and lmao at that guy, almost sounds like this guy my mom was dating, he took her to dinner using a coupon and on her birthday he offered to take her to a restaurant where my mom had bought him a gift certificate to a month before that.....so i guess she paid for her own dinner lol too funny

OMG

I always offer to pay for my half of the meal. At the same time i just do a rough estimate, say my meal came to $15. I wouldnt expect change from a $20.

Id be totally unimpressed if a guy pulled a stunt like that on me. May as well say she took him out for dinner, as if it wasnt for her paying for the meal, he would have not got his free meal.

Id be cool if he said he had the coupon and to spilt the remaining.

Hey....I've done that. Picked the lady up in my new Cadillac....took her to the restaurant, had a good meal and then paid with the coupon and credit card. I left the 20% tip and we went on. She thought it was cute and frugal and smart .... not cheap.

I completely agree with this.
JMO..but don't use a coupon on the first date, and, especially not in such a tacky manner.
Myself,I love 2 for 1 coupons, and I buy the Entertainment books when I go away for a few days to TO or Ottawa.
But,like others have said..save the coupons until you know each other.
And,don't use them to weasel out of paying anything.

Hmmmm . . . I guess, logically speaking, she paid for her half, and half would be the same amount whether he had a coupon or not. BUT, the ethical thing to have done would've been to give her half the money back. She did finance his share.

Geez, I can't imagine what cheapskate would use a half-off coupon on a first date. I don't think there would be second date.

He knew he had a 2-fer coupon and was not upfront with her before the bill arrived. And because of that alone, he is a schmutz. Hope she has a sense of humor!

If I was going out for dinner with a friend, and we both knew we would share the tab and my friend tells me he or she has a 2 for 1 coupon, I would expect he or she to tell me ahead of time. The only fair thing to do is to split the bill as is.

In the case, the guy was on a date and ends up with help to pay for his 2 for 1 book. Thats scammy and totally classless. I do not care for men who would even use a 2 for 1 on a first date... sends a bad message to me.
