Younger people and lack of emotionPage 2 of 2    (1, 2)
Desensitization to this type of behavior seems to really set the trend especially considering how influenced young people are by their peer groups. I would also agree a lack of serious punishment and a relatively soft legal system do nothing to prevent kids from performing more shockingly violent acts with regularity. As much as violence in media, video games, movies can be said to desensitize people to violent acts IMO it is much more important to teach people the consequences of their actions can be quite harsh while also maintaining a strong legal system that does punish and work at rehabilitation for those who commit such violent crimes.

I don't see this.

Young people are of course desensitised to some things we would consider horrific, because of unremitting exposure to horrors through not only entertainment but through the news. They have to tune out, to not feel the horror because it is unbearable. We all do this, it's survival. It's just more obvious how much the younger ones have tuned out from that kind of thing because they are so much more exposed to it than we are/were.

Young people are still emotional and caring and have all the potential in the world to grow up to be wonderful human beings. They have to hide a lot because of the way the world is and how hard it is to be in it -- I see the kids I teach hiding themselves, putting up masks and behaving aggressively and offensively to cover the fact of how scared they are, how vulnerable they feel. Sadly, by the time the are older, these defensive behaviours may be so ingrained that they lose touch with the caring hearts that reside behind it.

I see good in my students al the time, despite the very difficult situations most of them are in. One boy last week couldn't work because he missed his girlfriend so much, and was showing me photos of her and telling me how wonderful she was. This week he was away from college because he'd apparently dropped everything to go down to visit her. You can judge that as selfish and irresponsible or lazy or feckless, but I think it shows someone with a strong sense of love who can follow his heart.

A group of students were making fair but negative comments about some of their other lecturers, and making plans to insult them by making some humorous but potentially offensive posters to pin up. When I gently asked them to reconsider their plans and think about how much their fun could hurt people's feelings if the weren't careful, they responded with far more recognition and sensitivity than the lecturers in question would have done in a similar situation.

The also show more awareness and care for the environment than older generations. My students make far more fuss over wasting paper or electricity than occurs to me. When the ask me to turn the lights off or complain at the multiple copies of their work that have to be printed off, it gives me hope. They ma have an apparent lack of care in response to some horrors, but in other areas they care more than we do.

I have great hopes for the younger generation. If only the older generation did not batter them so much, they would be free to shine and I believe the world would really change.

Are you telling me that being a mother at 14 is a good thing?

It's only in the past 100 years or so that this isn't the norm.

I think a lot of what you folks are seeing is kids "the day after" they smoked pot. If they act like they're a bit sedated - they probably are.
